Hi,
I got my A5 (1.8T manual) 1.5 week ago. Needless to say that I am extremely happy and excited with the car. I have one question though. Sometimes when I am stopped and try to put the 1st gear it seems that it does not want to engage (i.e. it will not accept the first gear). Then I try again and it happens smoothly. Am I doing something wrong?

It tends to happen more when the car is cold. When the engine is switched off I do not have this problem. I think I am going to take it to the dealer to have a look...

I have now done 10,000 km and the problem is still occuring. It only happens occasionally but when it does there is no way I can put the 1st gear unless I let the car roll forward a bit on neutral. There is definately a problem with it. The suggestion by Ianhp1 does not work in my case. My dealer has suggested that I should take it in. They will open the gear box and check the gearwheels (I may be using the incorrect terminology here). I am planning to do this sometime in November, so I will keep you posted.

Dimitris, hi! I was just ready to post a thread about the same problem in my new A5 1.8T...Many times in traffic it's very difficult to put the first gear...I've done 250 km so far and I didnt see any improvement...What did your dealer finally say about this???

I think I am going to try again what everybody has suggested. I too am reluctant of people meddling with my gearbox. I need to take my car for a service at 15K km so I will see how it goes until then. If the problem is intense I will have to ask the dealership to investigate further when I take it for a service. I will keep everybody posted on developments.
Thanks for all the tips.
