Evo mag have just said 'bye' to their S5 long-termer. Must admit, didn't read much about it whilst it was in their tenure but they certainly sent it away with a tear in their eye.
Makes you realise what a great piece of work the S (and indeed the A) 5 actually is. Their sentiment was essentially that this was a car that grew steadily on them through the entire 11-month ownership period and the day it went, they had greater appreciation of the way it drove and the way it looked than when they first saw it. With a nod to our thread on LED exclusivity, they claimed that the car turned as many heads when it went as when it was new late last year.
Interestingly, they called out the suspension/ride for comment, stating: 'It was the arrival of a couple more ostensibly sporting cars on the fleet that showed how finely sorted the S5 was. The Impreza STi and Evo X have a more sporting demeanour, but the suspension of the Audi is firmer than either. The trick that Audi's engineers have pulled off is that the S5 never draws attention to its stiffness, the dampers and suspension mounts filtering out harshness and providing sufficient low-speed suppleness whilst still delivering high-speed comfort." Hmmm, now where did I put those original dampers and springs?........
They signed-off with "Some long-term test cars charm you from day one, others have roughly equal plus and minus points and and you just don't fall for them, but much rarer is the car that soars in your estimation. That's the S5, which seemed better looking and much more satisfying to drive 11 months after it arrived. Respect."
