Driving at about 40mph, gear S4 (dynamic) and I floored it to WOT. Gear dropped down and revs hit 7.2k. At max revs the EPC light came on, revs washed away rapidly and car went into limp mode. I was able to pull over and cut the engine. It restarted fine with no EPC light. All seemed normal again on the way home but I didn't want to push it too hard again.

Once home I did a Carista scan for fault codes but everything was clear, so I've got nothing to go on to figure out what happened or if there's anything wrong with the car.

My car is B8.5 2016 CREC with 17k miles and MRC Stage 2 tuned. I've not had this happen before.

I'll take it out again on a quiet road to see if I can repeat but in the meantime if anybody has any ideas, suggestions or advice that would be great, thanks.

I'll be pretty nervous about overtaking now this has happened!!

I have similar tune and car and have had that happen a couple of times. Scanning with VCDS has revealed a couple of codes, P050C and P130A, P0303, P33B9

I just clear them and make a mental note to not be as aggressive next time

More recently I have a repeat of a misfire on cylinder 3 which I believe is the coil pack, which I intend to change

Out of interest, what were those codes (to save me Googling them, haha)?

Not very helpful, but when I googled them, closest I can to was the coil pack on cylinder 3. Doug at MRC also did say if there are any issues 1st step is to change sparks plugs and coil packs.

Spark plugs were changed at last service < 2k miles ago, coil packs it is for me.

@TonyP

Many thanks for that. Strange that I didn't get any fault codes from a scan but maybe that's a Carista limitation? I'll see if I can get a VCDS scan done.

I'll try to reproduce if I get chance.

Anyone got any further thoughts or similar experience?

Thanks Tony. I changed the plugs last year, 1.5k miles ago. I'd be surprised if it's coil pack with such low mileage but good to know it's a possible cause. Cheers again.

Mines a 2015 on 34k miles, so no that high either.

I would see if you can get a vcds scan, if not pay Audi for the diagnostics... Better knowing what the fault codes are than guessing as to the fault.

I've got my car booked in for next Monday. In the meantime I've been looking into some old threads on here for any possible clues. There's a thread a couple of years ago where @Dippy , @ajayA5 and arad85 are discussing supercharger clutch failure in MRC Stage 2 tuned CREC engines. My car has this engine & tune and from what I saw the symptoms look very similar. It'll be interesting to see what the indy finds.

If it was a one-off then I wouldn't worry about it, however it would still be good for you to get a proper diagnostics scan. I had a stage 2 B5 S4 which went into limp mode once and once only in the 15 or so years that I owned it. IIRC it was an overboost detection. No tune is 100% perfect and nor should you assume that the OE ECU SW is perfect either!

My indy specialist did a VCDS DTC Report for me and found one:

29388 - Internal Control Module Main Processor Performance

P060C 00 [032] --

Intermittent - Not Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00000001
Fault Priority: 2
Fault Frequency: 1

Engine RPM: 6478
Normed load value: 100%
Vehicle speed: 93 km/h
Coolant temp: 91 C
Intake air temp: 48 C
Ambient air pressure: 1030 mb
Voltage terminal 30: 13.808V
Unlearning counter according OBD: 39
ENVD_0_MON: 27198
ENVD_1_MON: 20682
ENVD_2_MON: 3873
ENVD_3_MON: 4782
ENVD_4_MON: 5323
ENVD_5_MON: 276
ENVD_6_MON: 275

The indy said it's quite a rare code to see (30 years VAG experience & APR tuner). He suggested it could be related to my MRC map and to see what they say. Otherwise he said to continue monitoring it.

Any other ideas or experience of what might be causing it?

As @Dippy said, "No tune is 100% perfect and nor should you assume that the OE ECU SW is perfect either!" so hopefully it's a random one-off glitch.

It is certainly worth asking MRC about it. A web search of the code comes up with references to the PCM - powertrain. You say you hit the new redline with your TCU remap, but the diag shows 6478 rpm. It could be a "bug" in MRC's code whereby the ECU/TCU is detecting a mismatch in revs.

@Dippy Thanks. I've emailed MRC so hopefully they can help. I thought the car had hit redline and then autochanged gear with the revs then dropping in higher gear, as usual. On reflection the data suggests the rev drop was the engine going limp at 6478. I tend to spend more time concentrating out of the window than looking at the dials when flooring it, haha.

I got some feedback from MRC (always get good customer service with them). They said if this was an issue with the map it would’ve happened straight away not two years down the line. Doug said It is a strange code that he has only seen once on an S5 that had the throttle flap play up, but it had a throttle flap code come up at the same time.

I looked back at the DTCs and there was a fuel related intermittent /one-off code a couple of hours prior to the processor fault. This code was P008900, Valve for fuel metering. Doug said that code is for the control solenoid on the hp fuel pump – its more common for older cars to have this if hpfp is struggling either due to being worn, or low pressure struggling to feed the high pressure pump; the low pressure could indicate a fuel filter problem.

Anyhow, it's not clear if the 2 codes that were each a one-off, a couple of hours apart, are related.

I haven't been able to reproduce the problem but if it does happen again I may have something to go on.
