That's the coolant temperature gauge and it is highly unlikely that it is reading correctly. That message can come up for a variety of reasons because the ECU only activates SS under specific conditions, and a misleading coolant temperature should undoubtedly interfere. Start by checking the sensor connections and then the sensor itself.

Many thanks for the reply. I have found the fault and it the coolant temperature sensor that needs replacing. My friend has one of those devices which you plug it in the car it lets you any know fault. And the sensor issue flagged up. Is easy to replace? Can I do it myself with basic tools?
