Well I knew I'd leave the club eventually. Didn't expect it to be literally in a fireball...

Just popped to the shop for some milk, and it threw a gearbox warning on the dashboard that said I could continue driving but with limited functionality. I was about a quarter mile from home at this point so of course I did try and continue.

The next junction I get to I realise I have no power (engine revs, but no engagement), then I check the rear view mirror and there's flames coming out of the fuel filler cap area...

I'm OK, but I'm afraid after all those years of work and money spent, she's completely gone.

I think I'm still in shock, hasn't hit me yet that it's really gone. Fireman reckoned something went wrong the rear differential, potentially throwing oil onto the exhaust which then set the whole thing going.

That really is sad to look at. Did it all burn down to a empty shell, or did the FB get there quite quickly?
Not a complete shell, but enough that from the rear bench and back it's just a rusty skeleton. :'(

That is shite indeed. I'd also be gutted, sorry to hear this. I actually keep a fire extinguisher in the boot of my car, assuming the fire will be in the engine bay, but it looks like that would not of helped in this situation.

Seems like I'm moving away for the modding life too, at least for the period of finance

Just picked up her replacement, a Volvo S60 T8, 400 and something BHP, 0-60 in 4.4! It was that or maybe a B9 S5, but I can't help feeling it would haunt me being an Audi. Plus I wanted to try that whole electric thing to some extent.

Nice, so it's that a hybrid, or full electric?
It's a 2.0 twin charged 4 cylinder pushing 300 and change up front, with an 85bhp motor on the rear wheels. The electric range is a bit wimpy though, struggles to get 20 miles on a charge, but does keep enough juice to be useful for performance.

I managed to strike a deal with them where I get to keep this one for a year, then swap for a new one ordered to spec next March. The new one will have the same engine, but 50 miles from the electric and 145bhp at the rear bringing it to a total of 455bhp and shaving another 0.2s off the run to 60.

Nice, I always fancied a fast Volvo. Be interesting to see how this compares to the Audi
So far actually it's rather similar when driven normally, the 'low end grunt' of the TDI is not unlike the initial electric shove, then you could say once you press on the petrol engine takes over smoothly kinda like a form of turbo lag

If you're driving it in its sportier modes though it's quite the different animal, absolutely rockets along in a very linear fashion. Can barely notice the gear changes unless you're really trying to shove your foot through the floor.

Nobody was hurt fortunately, but now the insurance game begins. Despite the cheapest bone-stock S-Line A5 starting on AutoTrader at 7k, they're trying to offer 5k...

So sorry for you mate- it's really sad after all that care- but you can always stay positive..
I had a speedboat explode on me when I had a 'Banana boat' rides business out in Brazil many moons ago, and it felt like my entire world had gone up in smoke too, so I came back to the UK and started a 'Pulsar Mobile Lasergames' business (with 5 very expensive Systems) which was then destroyed by a huge fire that was started by a reclaimed wood burner in a neighbouring (uninsured) builder's storage unit..
Best of luck to you going forward, cheers!

Find vehicles of similar year mileage and spec and send the info to your insurance co if they can find for less ask for proof.
Remember to make sure similar service history and if you bought private trade or dealership as replacement vehicle cost should also match where purchased from.
They should be replacig like for like.If you have space buy the write off back offer them £500 and sell the bits if its worth it.

ha!
Never mind being uninvited from future meet ups, if Audimad was still around you would have been banned from the forum the second you walked into the volvo shop......

Anyway, bet you are looking forward to shaving 0.2 seconds off your 0-60 though...
