Help! I've recently purchased a 2017 Audi A5, it's been running like a dream, no problems whatsoever until today. Parked up went to get out and I couldn't. Driver door didn't open, I know the car was unlocked as the passenger front opened fine (its a coupe). Does this have anything to do with the "Be aware of door safelock" message I get when the engine turns off? Tried the instructions in the owners manual under the Safelock section but no luck.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Will need to workout whether it’s a mechanical or an electrical problem first.

put your ear to the outside of the door where the catch is. is it making a noise when you press the unlock button?
if it does go to passenger door and do the same. does it sound different?

a clunk insted of a lighter click?

if both sides are making a noise then its unlikely to be electrical and more likely a mech problem within the catch.

youll then need to get the door card off somehow (still with the door shut as it wont open) and butcher the plastic off back side of the catch and use a screw driver to move the little internal levers till you can open it.

Thanks for the speedy reply Alex.

Passenger and driver doors both make the same noise when the unlock button is pressed. I've noticed the latch doesn't seem to engage (like the passenger door) but does from the outside thankfully. I've therefore been able to open the door from the outside so I can get in and out but have to roll down the window and reach for the handle! Do you think this could be a fault with the lock mechanism from the inside?

Thanks, Kish

I think you’re onto something there.

could be the door latch release cable within, the cable could be loose/ stretched something along those lines. Relatively inexpensive item circa £20

There is a how to thread on removing the Audi A5 door cards as I’ve done so previously. Make sure you have a pry tool, hex/star keys and be gentle with the door clips! As they can break

The job itself is more of a faff than a cost to be honest.

Sounds like what you've got is a loose (or disconnected) Bowden cable. It goes from the inside door latch to the locking mechanism and is easy to replace.

eBay is a brilliant place and so is Audi dealership, you’ll be surprised at how cheap they have normal parts like this.

Whats you exact model and age?

Definitely worth calling your local dealership for a price first through the parts department.

So quick update on this, on Monday afternoon, I decided to call the dealer where I purchased the car from and explained the situation. They were extremely helpful and professional, asked me to bring the car in on Weds morning and replaced the cable in under an hour, free of charge! All fixed now.

Thanks for everyone's help :)

Blimey well done, you and Alex both!! These stupid cables PLUS the thermostats seem to be the 2 main breaking items on the otherwise very strong A5.
