Replaced the Passenger side sensor today after the driver one yesterday.
All working.

I took a couple of photos as I was doing this as it might help other folks.
15min job max.

Torex Screw in the door level with the handle behind rubber, this is captive so you can't screw it all the way out.

Remove plastic cover (I just gave it a pull with my fingers)
Image

Remove plastic insert (Or Door lock depending on which side your doing)
This was harder to remove (I used grips with a cloth) just gave a gentle wiggle.
Image

The 2 parts of the handle just removed.
Image

Move the handle towards the hole where blank was then just give gentle pull to remove (Hinge action)
Image

The handle will just pull out when it's 90 degrees to the door.
Disconnect wiring to sensor (Watch wiring dosn't go back inside door)
Image

Full handle and parts.
Image

New Sensor at the top which has changed slightly then old one then handle.
To remove sensor from handle you pop the wiring out from the end then you will need a small screwdriver to prise the end out (Opposite end from wiring)so you can slide the sensor out of the handle.
Image

My Damaged sensor which has cracked and full of water.
Old one was see through but new one is black.
Image

Just do everything in reverse.
I found it easier when putting the handle back in to put a piece of string round the door release so I could pull it to get the handle behind it.
Image

Once the handle was behind it just pull one end of the string through and the catch stays behind the handle.

I hope this has helped if your keyless entry dosn't work.

Thanks to the guys that helped me finding all the info out.

Door actuators.

This happened to me. I replaced the keyless sensors in my 2009 S5 (with Chinese cheapies), but then found that the problem was the door lock actuator. I found one for about $250, online, then spent about 1 1/2 hours replacing it. It works fine now (almost a year). It's a pain to install, you must remove door card, then wiggle this actuator into position, and connect the mechanical and electrical connections, in a very difficult place inside the door. Skinned knuckles are worth the $500 savings!

Just a quick question regarding the sensors would an A5 still have the tabs on the door handles if it didn't have the smart lock? Cuz mine had the rectangles on the door handles but they don't do anything now I'm not sure if that's cuz the original buyer didn't buy that option or wether the sensors have packed up? Hope this makes sense :)

Yes, I replaced mine with eBay sensors from China, ÂŁ11 each. All working good and have been for a few weeks.

I haven't started the engine and driven it around yet I'm sure once I do it'll rethrow the fault code complaining of a ground issue and the sensors won't work again. Any insight into this problem would be fantastic, this is the only thing on my car that doesn't work as it should! I know the sensors are good, the question now becomes, what else can I check?[/QUOTE]

On my car the square locks it and i grab the handle to unlock it.
if one handle sensor is faulty it will cause all to stop.
That is why i bought one first to try and see if i swapped them
around to see if it fixed it. Turns out both of mines were faulty.
I never cleared codes due to no vag com and all works after both swapped.
you can see in beginning of the thread the pics of mines with water damage.
audi has released a few versions of the sensor now each going up in price.
Their is also no left or right both are the same.

I hope this helps.

It doesn't :) both sensors are new, both work. The fault is somewhere else. Works after clearing codes, start the car and it no longer works.

I got my Ross Tech cable in today, I cleared my codes and sure enough the sensors work on both sides again with one caveat. I'm under the impression grabbing anywhere but the square is to unlock, and the square is to lock. Mine seems to do whatever it wants so if I grab the handle and hold on it'll unlock, lock, unlock, etc. If I grab and quickly pull then I don't risk it relocking on me.

My car has just started to do the same. The problem started a few days ago with the passenger side not opening with my fob, Now the drivers side does the same. I would say the door opens everyone one in 5 if Im lucky.
The only way I can enter the car is to use the key, the windows come down and I open the door with the interior door handle.

Whats going on any ideas???? I plugged my VAG com cable in and no error codes show up

Do codes need to be cleared if this is done? My driver side door opens about 1 in every 10 times I try to get in the car. Passenger side has no problems. I figured I could just buy a new sensor and install it in the driver side handle. Is it not as easy as that? Do i need a VAG-COM?

#54 ·
Supposedly you don't

#52 ·
I never cleared my codes until after it worked.

#51 ·
Yeah, I still haven't gotten back to a VCDS to clear the codes and try again. Might be worth me trying to swap the sensors.

All i can say is i changed 1 & it worked once or twice then stopped again swapped tge other side and BINGO!

door handle sensors

I cleared the codes, still not working.
I got VAG-COM codes 01516 and 03123, but I can't find a searchable database of these codes. Any suggestions? Do these codes point to the door handle sensors?
Since the lights come on when I grab the drivers side handle (but no unlock), doesn't that mean that the sensor is OK?

NOT giving up!

I still have issues but try clearing all codes first. Worked on mine then they didn't work again. The only issue remaining on the car!

Keyless entry failure

Wow, great door handle sensor replacement guide, Shamus. Thanks a lot! You made it easy. Ebay made it cheap.

Unfortunately, it didn't bring my drivers-side back to life.

I swapped both sides, and no change. Pass-side and trunk unlock fine. Drivers-side, when I grab the handle, the lights come on (it "feels" me), but doesn't un-lock. I use the FOB.
No "chirp" on locking, either.

Any insight is much appreciated.

So, replaced both sensors to no avail. Then while at a friends we cleared the codes and all of a sudden it worked, took her for a drive, got back and they don't work so something is up! We were out of time but clearing again I bet would make it temporarily work, what's this antenna?

Or maybe some of the VCDS changes are messing with the sensors?

Okay, here's the rub. Until you put back in the lock (or plastic insert depending on side) and tighten down the torx bolt in the side it won't appear to have the normal pull.
