There have been threads on this before I think.

For my 2p worth I think the main loss with a 3.0Tdi Quattro is the wonderful V8 noise.

Back in 2008 I nearly moved from Audi (considered used 911 and Aston) but decided against it in Recession UK. Went on to look at S5 and borrowed a loaded one for the weekend. I absolutely loved it apart from the 14mpg and potential for high depreciation. Dealer suggested I try the 3.0Tdi Quattro.. what me.. a Diesel... I haven't look back and am now on my second 3.0Tdi Quattro. What do you gain , well in my experience 40mpg on a manual Coupe circa 35 on the S Tronic Cab at the moment, better residuals unless the V8 S5 aquires 'cult status'.

Whilst I could have bought pretty much anything I chose not to spend my money on Petrol and Depreciation and apart from the noise I don't think 3.0Tdi Quattro Diesel owners are missing that much.

Sorry Mike the 3.0 Tdi costs a lot more than a couple of % more to run than an S5. Fuel costs about double, depreciation, insurance. I reckon on 12000 miles a year a 3.0Tdi Quattro will save you over £1500 (maybe £1800) on fuel alone.

I do occasionally look at S5V8 Coupe (not the V6 Cab!!) and wish I ha one but quickly come back to earth when I realise that the S5 is really not that much better in the real world driving we do than the 3.0Tdi Quattro and many will argue that the 500nm of Torque from the Diesel is actually far more fun.

Given the choice (money no object) I probably would have gone S5 V8 but I personally don't think it is worth the considerable extra expense, especially as 30% of my fuel is bought abroad these days where Diesel is about 25% cheaper.

Why Auto Tdi and S5 Manual. I think I am correct in saying the 0-62 times for a Manual 3.0Tdi is actually slightly better or on a par with an S5 V8 Auto. Whatever there is not a lot in it. Having gone from 3.0Tdi Manual to a 3.0Tdi S Tronic Auto whilst still missing using my left leg the Stronic is growing on me and the gear changes are quick.

Also. What basis did you do your fuel calculation?

Enjoy the test drives. try an Audi dealer and push for a day or even half a day test.

You will be lucky getting 23 out of a manual S5 as I said my 300 miles gave me 14mpg whereas a similar day in a 3.0Tdi Quattro gave 38.7 (both Manuals) . A friend has an S5 Auto which he gets around 20mpg.

If you have a Manual S5 and want fun I would bank on 15-18 mpg tops , A 3.0Tdi should achieve double that. I never got below 34.3 (averaging 84mpg -not in UK!) on mine and typically over 40.

Audi Petrol engines (especially the smaller ones) are well known for not achieving combined mpg figures.

Whatever you do good luck, and yes if I had money to burn I'd have an S5 V8 but the 3.0Tdi Quattro is not far behind and will save you shed loads of money.

Re a half day/day test drive. Make contact tell them what you want well in advance and it should be possible.

If you want a used S5 or 3.0Tdi PM me ... I have a great Audi dealer contact.

What's your budget?

PS. You could go for some nice 17in wheels too ;-0

42.2 Mpg on a Tdi at 75mpg!

I agree with Dan and Howdi... not everything is clearcut. Most of us can't have everything in life and I chose not to spend my cash on an S5. Rather filling up, insuring, taxing a heavily depreciating S5.

I would love one (but not that much) but much prefer spending the money on idle pursuits rather than giving most of it back to the Government.

We really are not tractor drivers nor do we deserve sympathy.

Joes situation seems rare these days, an Employment Contract that encourages what many consider to be gas guzzling cars. But given that I'd have one too. Got any jobs ;-0....but as I don't believe in God I probably don't have a hope...and also not sure he (or she) or LGBT (another post grimree) invented any engine.

PS Boom Boom is the Tractor fan I hear but he's gone all quiet these days..

As I work cross sector I don't get the point. The Public pay for Private sector excess and the Private Pay for the Public Sector... Your point is lost on me! Any one else understand?

Dan, Howdi??

A difficult decision indeed until you drive a 3.0Td Quattro and do the sums. I am on my second! The base S5 is not that much more fun IMHO.... Now RS5 well maybe....just maybe...

In an S5 v 3.0 TDI debate there is no argument, S5 wins hands down. The 3.0 TDI is second rate and you will always feel like that when you see an S5 on the road.

The 3.0TDI is a sacrifice, primarily performance in favour of cost.

If money is no option the S5 is the only choice, I tend to find it slightly amusing people vouching for the 3.0TDI considering the prices of the cars and insurance etc, petrol/diesel cost differences are a fraction of total cost of the cars.

I have never and will never desire to drive a diesel A5, it never even crossed my mind.
:laughinatabove:
Yeh but a facelifted V6 isn't a proper S5... The V6 is surely second rate... not the 3.0Tdi.. Folks on here are probably thinking you're not a REAL MAN unless you have a V8 to wave around!!! WTF...

Also I don't agree with the TT 2.0TFSI being good. We had a 2008 well spec'd new one for 6 months with 19in 7 spokes, horrible IMHO, engine OK, FWD handing was dire!

Beware incoming Flak....

TTS Quattro is great and completely different to drive than the new 2008 TT 2.0TFSI FWD we had briefly which both I and Mrs RG hated . Post 69 above seems to imply Diesels are crap and a TT FWD is chuckable. Can I state that having owned both the 3.0Tdi Q and the TT FWD the enjoyment of driving the A5 is significanly greater than the TT. Also I accept the V6 S5 has been produced as a compromise, emissions , fuel etc. not a bad car but less appealing due to loss of V8 and M6 gearbox.

If we go back to the original question S5 or 3.0Tdi?? I would strongly advise go for 3.0Tdi and put the (significant) savings you make into a high earning account until you can buy an RS5 (or 997 etc) or as someone else said a real car!

All cars are a compromise, we have 5 in the family, and it's good to have a mix.

Great Thread!

Simply go and drive them both and push the dealer for an whole day in each of the cars! 1 Hour is not enough! and the Audi Dealers will support a day test drive if they believe you are going to buy one of them!

Then make your choice- you are then most likely going to be very happy with your OWN choice!

Regards to All

Oldsat
Absolutely spot on advice Oldsat... I did just that back in 2008 and bought 2 3.0Tdis.. BUT... still have a hankering for another V8...... until I realise the fuel cost, depreciation cost ... and the fact that in most situations there is not a huge difference in enjoyment IMHO...

I did the above also and noticed a huge "difference in enjoyment", do as oldsat says and you will see for yourself, if you go for the TDI you could just stick an S5 badge on it like the guy I mentioned previously.....
:laughinatabove::laughinatabove:

This almost prompts another thread..

What other badges do people stick on or remove from their car to pretend it's something else.... 'Today Matthew (for those who remember) I'm going to be a Skoda Superb..... WTF Leave it alone...

No that appeals to my sense of fun M33. I came across an old 1.2 Badge in my garage the other day. Wonder where I should stick that. Will all the engine downsizing maybe we will see an S5 1.2 one day!!
