I have a 2016 Diesel A5 Sportback manual gearbox.

I cannot select third gear from second going up the box or from fourth going down without a grinding of the gears. This does not happen in any other gear selection. It's as though the clutch isn't depressed far enough but it only happens in third gear. Clutch travel is smooth. No problem with reverse selection.

I have read previous threads about throwout bearing wear/failure but this doesn't seem to fit the same mo......

Can anybody help?

Many Thanks

Brian mate welcome on board and we wanna SEE yer car please!!! Listen I dont know cos my A5 and current S4 are both autos but your problem sounds a bit strange. If I were you I would seek out a good independent VAG specialist and ask for his opinion. Good luck Simon

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the welcome.
It transpires that the 'Selector Hub Assembly' for the third gear Synchro has failed and part of it has lodged between the bulk ring and drive gear......

It would be interesting to understand how this failure could occur and whether it could be linked to my driving???
