Ok, following several requests here's the brief DIY on retrofitting the driver's seat memory panel in the door. This will enable two directly accessible memorized seat positions (not via key fob as discussed many times before).

Note: this DIY is for LHD A5 Coupe equipped with driver's seat memory module J136 (check its presence using VAG-COM beforehand).

Parts required:

8T0 959 769 V10 seat memory panel E97 (LHD driver side) 1 pcs.
8T1 959 527 A7PE seat memory panel surrounding frame (LHD driver side) 1 pcs.
8L0 971 883 connector T8x 1 pcs.
000 979 009 E connector wire 7 pcs.
7L6 868 243 spare door panel clip 3-5 pcs.

If the car doesn't have J136 memory module, it has to be also installed.

Tools required:

VAG 3409 plastic wedge
VAG 3392 panel pliers
torx screwdriver
soldering iron / insulation tape
VAG-COM

I strongly recommend using wedge and pliers, otherwise it's extremely easy to damage the door trim.

Basically, the task is to install the seat memory button panel E97 and connect it to J386 driver's door control module. Perfect instructions on how to do particular steps right may be taken from ELSA shop manual.

The main steps are:

1. Remove door decorative trim using wedge

2. Remove door armrest front/bottom trim using wedge and large flat screwdriver. Disconnect wire from door lock switch E150 (pics 1, 2)

3. Undo five screws holding the door panel with torx screwdriver

4. Unclip and remove door panel using pliers (pic 3). If done carefully most clips may be re-used, otherwise replace with spare ones. Disconnect T32j connector (pic 4) and door lock rod

5. Assemble wire harness connecting E97 to J386:

- 6 complete wires (signal) connect T8x on E97 to T32j on J386. Pins 1-17, 2-19, 3-15, 4-14, 7-7, 8-2

- 1 split wire (illumination) from T8x pins 5 and 6 should be connected to door illumination wires (brown and blue/brown). I've chosen to cut in at E150 (pic 5) connector using soldering iron

6. Connect T8x to E97, install E97 in the door panel (pic 6)

7. Put the door panel and decorative trim back in reverse order

8. Install the new seat memory button panel surrounding frame (don't forget to re-connect the E150 switch)

9. Perform some VAG-COM coding:

[42 – Door Elect, Driver]
[Coding - 07]

[Byte 4]

Bit 1 = 1

[36 – Seat Mem. Drvr]

[Coding - 07]

[Byte 2]
Bit 1 = 1

10. Check the memory function according to car manual. Enjoy!

Still problems

Hi guys,

sorry that I haven't responded in quite a while. I continued working on retrofitting the memory seat buttons, tried quite a lot with the wiring (also with the green cable). I think I got that one right. I also had the seat memories coded, the menu "Driver Seat and passenger seat" shows also. When I use different keys, the driver seat moves in different positions upon opening. However, the 4 button switch in the driver door doesn't react when I try to program buttons 1-3. What might be wrong? I have an appointment with my VCDS guy tonight to check what might be wrong. Any ideas coding wise?

Hi thanks for the flowers. I would start with the coding. Two codings have to be performed not only one like I indicated above. That had been the problem all along in my case. Do that first with vcds. Then go an check under the driver seat in the floor boxif you have that green wire on pin 3. If yes it is very easy to retrofit everything. If no no problem also, no need to place a new wire to the door. There is already one that can connected to the relevant pin in the door jack.
The wiring of the door jack is easy. Just dismount the door Panel and connect it according to the wiring diagram. You get ground and plus for the lighting from the trunk switch. Jus start with it we help you on the way. It's a nice function by the way helps me preserve the good condition of my leather seats!

Fitted this over the weekend using a door card I got off ebay for ÂŁ30 with both loom and buttons.
As mine is a cab had to add additional wiring for rear windows between E97 and window switch, two cables later a bit of coding and all works great with the exception of the mirror memory.
Has anyone any luck in sorting this?

Thanks

Hi. Yes, I got mine working when I fitted the memory switch.

I presume yours currently remembers its position following a kerb-view on reverse i.e. always returns to normal position after dipping?

You can replace it with the seat in situ, but its much easier to unbolt the seat and tilt it backwards onto the rear bench.

Something I found by accident.

With the drivers seat in position1 , if I press and release postion2 button with the ignition off and the door open, the seat will move to position 2 and vice versa. I use this as a convenience feature so that it easier to get in/out of the car and saves me rubbing against the seat bolster. I have position1 as my driving position and position2 with the seat moved further back.

With the door closed, or ignition on you have to press and hold the button until the saved position is reached.

Does anyone else's seat behave like this?

Thanks Tomcat-R for the great guide for this mod!!! Got mine done a few days ago by my mate "T8ups" and works great, he also done the key function so both keys have different settings. Finally my girlfriend has her own setting!! >:)

All parts were genuine from Audi. I will list the price for the parts all include VAT.

* Memory switch button - ÂŁ93.10

* Memory Trim panel surrounding frame - ÂŁ15.06

* Connector - ÂŁ5.08

* Wiring was supplied by T8ups

* Door clips - ÂŁ0.88p each but we only damaged 1 due to been a new car & careful!

My A5 Coupe had the module and fully electric seats from factory so it was a case of small wiring, coding and basically plug and play! Simple mod but amazing out come :grin2:

MUST DO MOD!!!

Does he supply the wiring ready to plumg and play?

I have just bought a coupe doorcard with buttons and need to install on my cab.

I just bought a 2009 Coupe RHD S5 interior (leather, memory, heated) and planning to do retrofit this in a LHD Coupe 2008 which now has non-electric s-line half leather seats.

As obviously the driver sits on the right seat in the UK and in NL we are supposed to sit on the left, I think I have to make some adaptions.

I have been reading about the J136 module which is fitted under the drivers seat, can I just take the ECU and switch it to the other seat? Both seats are full factory wired?

Also I have to buy the correct doorswitch and trim for the LHD doorcard. I have read this thread thoroughly and it should be possible to have the buttons on both sides? If J386 and J387 allow to have two memory seats?

All your help and info is welcome!

Does anybody have the definitive/necessary codings needed to make the memory seat/auto tilt mirror functions work.
I now have all the hardware in place and just need the coding.
Thanks in advance.

I did this mod today and thanks for the write up.

I purchased a doorcard with the buttins and wiring which made for an easier swap over. It did need the illumination wires connecting but not a huge challenge.

All lights up and works inc beep, not mirror memory function. Not sure if additional coding is required or whether it has the functionality?
