CALLING RS5 OWNERS: Catalytic Converters Failing

9958 Views 14 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Pneal1
Guys, can any 2010+ B8 RS5 and RS4 owners who have had catalytic converter and/or emissions system issues please contact me ASAP via [email protected].

After reading about a number of cases where the catalyst components have broken up and come out of the exhaust system, I too have now had to replace a catalytic converter in my 2011 RS5.

Tell-tale signs: Emissions test failure, strange rattles from the exhaust, visible debris in the rear silencers.

I engaged in a dispute with Audi UK, and after preliminary discussion with an emissions control specialist it seems that they may not be fit for purpose.

Both were replaced between Audi and the warranty company ! - the other side was showing signs of failing as well !

Not bored yet - plus not sure what I would replace it with !

Oh really i thought you had to pay for them well thats a result then i take it you haven't had any issues with mot's then? yeah thats the predicament i was in.. the new generation of the a5 should be available soon I'm guessing it a hard choice.. you have done well... they are brilliant tho.. just was no longer practical for me with a growing child...cant believe horus had sold his as his was really nice I'm shocked he's gone to jaguar. do you think you'll stick with audi?
What is the quickest way to get this diagnosed and fixed under warranty? I don't have any bits coming out, but the same smells and rattles as my first RS5 :(
MOT emissions test
Cool thanks. I am obliged to sort that immediately if it fails? MOT not due till January.
Nope
MOT emissions test

Check for debris coming out of the exhaust, especially after reviewing the car at a stand still. You will be looking for white sand like stuff along with chorky chunks and cotton like flakes.
Check out my video where one catexploded on me, later on I went on to gutting the other one, by removing the firewall in the engine and removing the lambda sensors and poking rods and hard wire cables to smash up the remaining cat on the other back, and revving the sh##*out of te car to get it all out after refitting everything.

this is the video:

Obviously get the cars ecu tuned to run without cats, it will boost you’re cruising mpg as a bonus.
I have a b8 RS5 and the cats rattled out/failed , did u pass MOT with no cats? Thanks paul
Paul I dont think so mate no cos you will be emitting too much CO. But to be sure take your car to an MOT tester and get the gases checked, could be ok. Good luck!!!!
Hi, it didnt pass with no cats, hydrocarbons/unburnt fuel was fine, lambda was fine, CO was 5 times the limit! I put 200 cell sports cats in on the down pipes with v bands so easily swap in and out for straight pipe, it passed the mot with the sports cats but did have to get them fairly hot too pass! All good in the end though
