Ive had my A5 a couple of days now and cannot get my Nokia E51 to pair with the car via bluetooth. I had an S4 before this with phone prep and the same phone worked via bluetooth with no trouble.

Anybody got any ideas to try before I take the car back to the dealers?

It should work in theory, I use Nokia E90 which has the same interface as the E51.

Try resetting the Bluetooth on the car, Telephone menu, Setup, and then Reset the settings. This wipes everything off the Telephone interface and puts it back to factory settings.

On the Nokia, select Connectivity and then Bluetooth. Make sure Remote SIM Mode is On, and also check Phone Visibility is Shown To All for now, but remember to change back to Hidden afterwards for security reasons.

When you switch the car engine on, the bluetooth will be active on the car for a short period of time. Start the pairing process and it should then find the Nokia. There is a time limit to start the process, and then you receive a 16 digit pin (or seems like a very long one!). Enter that in the phone quickly since you have about a minute before it times out.

Good luck!

Just a note: Laingy did not specify if his/her car has the Bluetooth handsfree/phone-prep only, or if he has the SIM Access Profile Bluetooth system Deepmeister is referring to. Both can be used in normal BT HF mode, latter also in SIM Access Profile mode that requires more fiddling and the longer PIN code (since it transfers SIM access data)...

Generally, I think U.S. cars come without SIM Access Profile (just me recollection, could be wrong), in Europe cars with navigation with SIM Access Profile and cars without navigation without SIM Access Profile. But there may be differences in accessory options...

But, yeah, I agree, there is a time limit from start of car with the pairing. Make sure both car and phone are set as Bluetooth visible in the settings too. And read the respective manuals. :)

I have bluetooth plus with handset although I have yet to use the handset as the bleutooth link works so well with the car systems.

I had great trouble linking my PDA phone to the car. In the end I contacted my dealer who emailed me a list of supported phones along with the level of functionality.

I was very surpised how many mainstream phone models had limited connectivity or function, after all bluetooth is bluetooth so they say!

Pairing problems may not be down to procedure or method but more like support of particular models. I now use a Nokia 8800 which works brilliantly (as indicated in the Audi supported phone list)

Thanks guys. I have the basic phone prep but found resetting the settings in the MMI to the defaults got me paired up straight away.

However, I did not get any of my phone book to go across?

I am picking up my car next week and was wandering whether anyone has tried the Blackberry 8110 with the A5 bluetooth setup.

Thanks

Hey Spike...

Is there any chance of you posting the "approved list" of phones here?!

Maybe you could scan/OCR the file, and copy and paste it into the thread...would be really helpful to folks I'm sure.

Or is the list too long?

Thanks in advance
Nick

Hmmmm. Need some help here on the same kind of thing please fellas:

Got a new phone yesterday, a Nokia 6120. Paired it with the car using the 1234 code. It makes and receives calls fine but the options for the phone book from the phone and the call logs are greyed out and are not available for selction. Incoming calls just display the number and not the caller's name.

Thought that my new phone doesn't transmit the necessary data (even though it has a remote SIM option) so re-paired my old phone (Nokia 6233) and I've now got the same problem with that phone:confused:

My sales guy paired my phone for me when I collected the car. Did he do something differently or am I just an idiot???

It would appear that the 6120 is not compatible for phone book and call log. My old 6233 has started working again today:confused:

Anyone a member on the VW/audi forum listed below care to copy the list here please. I'm not a member and it won't let me have access to the page. I don't want to sign up as I now what will happen: It will be yet another car forum that I will keep nipping into and I'll do even less work!!

Hi Nick,

I'll see if I can dig it out and scan it in. In fact I will contact my Audi dealer to see if they have a newer version. Attaching it to a post is another story!!! :D

Lack of functions was my main problem when I first got the A5. I tried several phones which all managed to make and receive calls. But I found not being able to access phone books, logs, etc very restrictive.

The "approved" list is somewhat misleading in the context of your question. It tends to imply those phones works and others will not work. They also refer to cradles which tend to apply to older models but are rarely available for the newer phones.

As a general rule regarding Nokia phones and the Audi bluetooth modules, the basic answer is:

Series 40 phones built during the last 4-5 years generally work well but may need the latest firmware update if the phone is particularly old. Older phones can be updated but need to go to a local Nokia Service Centre since firmware updates cannot be performed by consumers. The firmware update is needed because it improves the bluetooth compatibility which was fine tuned after being in the field. Once operational, the Contacts list, missed calls, dialled calls, received calls, etc, all seem to work fine on most models.

Series 60 phones, often called "smartphones", and tend to be the E-series or N-series models, have bigger issues despite being newer and "smarter". In almost every case, the Contacts list is only possible after downloading the Nokia 810 Contacts Downloader software into the phone (free from Nokia website) and force-pushing the Contacts to the car which is "hit and miss" at best. Very poor situation, but not sure if that is a failing on the part of Nokia or Audi. The missed calls, dialled calls, received calls, etc, do not transfer from the phone so that is also not available unless the call was missed, dialled, or received in the car. As for text messages, this is only possible on MMI units and only if the phone has SIM Access Protocol (SAP) enabled, but just to read new incoming messages, not older stored messages.

In effect, your phone may work but probably needs a firmware update. Telling you about the Series 60 situation in case you get tempted to upgrade your phone and get a new fangled Nokia phone only to find you are worse off....!

Its a shame because the Nokia E/N series work perfectly in many other cars, and other lesser brands of phone work fine with the Audi car kits hence the difficulty in determining if it is a Nokia problem or an Audi problem.

Hope it helps.

Bluetooth compatibility list for Q7, A6, A8 & A5 Feb 2008

I tried to contact the chap at Audi that I had dealings with before but he wasn't in. Remembering the hoops I had to jump through last time I though I would leave speaking to someone else!

I have found the list dated Feb 2008 that may help. It is specific to cars fitted with navigation system. I'm afraid the latest and greatest phones are not on the list but you may be able to get an update from your dealer.

I can only say that I used this list to select the Nokia 8800 and it does everything promised.

Hope this is of use.

Here is list from the VWAudi forums posted as requested. Apologies for the length.

Known limitations
1 The call records are carried forward in the wrong order.
> Activate the ‘re-sort call records’ function in the menu in your vehicle.
This function is not available with all specifications.
2 If the mobile phone is in UMTS mode, the signal-strength display becomes empty.
3 If the mobile phone is connected to the vehicle as soon as it is switched on, no phonebook is
transferred.
> Wait at least a minute after switching your phone on, before connecting it to the vehicle.
4 After the phone has been connected to the vehicle, it may periodically restart itself.
> If this happens, delete the call records from your phone.
5 For incoming calls, it is possible that just a '+' is displayed in the vehicle.
6 After removing the connection from vehicle to phone, the voice quality of telephone conversations
may be impaired (echo at the other end).
> If this happens, restart your phone.
7 For incoming international calls whose number is not displayed, the '+' is not inserted. It may not be
possible to call this number back from the call records.
8 In the phone settings, the functions 'Activate screensaver after...' and 'Stand by after...' must be
deactivated in order to maintain a constant connection between the vehicle and the phone.
9 Companies may deactivate the Bluetooth function on staff phones ("IT Policy").
> Contact your system administrator.
10 Mimium required software version. With older phone software versions sporadic bluetooth-disconnects
may occur.
11 If the telephone is updated with ActiveSync
®, depending on equipment and phonebook size, you may
experience intermittent breaks in the Bluetooth connection.
> If this happens, reduce the quantity or length of entries in your phonebook.
12 Waiting calls can not be replaced/rejected
etc: - On the whole, phones sort the phonebook in order of first names.
- During callsetup sporadic noise may occour

Bluetooth capabilities of second-generation mobile phone preparation
The second generation of mobile phone preparation has been supplemented with a Bluetooth interface in the Audi
A2, A3, A4 and TT, R8 and A5 without navigation system from production month 02/04 and in the Audi Q7, A6
(C6), A8 and A5 with navigation system upon its introduction as an optional extra. We recommend that you
connect your mobile phone, as before, to the vehicle's external aerial and operate it using a mobile phone
adapter. What’s more, the mobile phone’s electricity consumption is very high when running Bluetooth, which
reduces battery life. When using a mobile phone adapter, the phone is charged while the hands-free function is
used.
Electromagnetic fields can be generated when using mobile telephone systems inside a vehicle. We
therefore recommend that you only use your mobile phone in your car via a mobile phone adapter.
Mobile phones tested with Bluetooth® for the Audi A2, A3, A4,
TT, R8 and A5 without navigation system

Overview
Mobile phone preparation with Bluetooth interface enables a wireless connection to be established between a
mobile phone with Bluetooth capabilities and your vehicle. Depending on equipment, the system is operated via
the radio, the MMI, the multifunction steering wheel or speech control.
Implementation of the Bluetooth standard can vary depending on the mobile phone itself and the software it
contains. Performance in the vehicle may therefore be impaired through no fault of Audi.
The compatibility of selected Bluetooth mobile phones and their software with mobile phone preparation is
constantly being tested. The table below* shows all the mobile phones tested by Audi.
Mobile phone preparation’s functional range:
In addition to standard hands-free functions (accepting/rejecting calls and hands-free communication), mobile
phone preparation also supports signal-strength and provider-name display and transfer of the phonebook and
call records.
Not all mobile phones/software versions support the advanced functions.
You can see from the table below* whether the advanced functions are available on your mobile phone.
Important note:
Electromagnetic fields can be generated when using mobile telephone systems inside a vehicle. We therefore
recommend that you only use your mobile phone in your car via a mobile phone adapter.
* This table does not apply to the Audi Bluetooth car phone (SIM access)
Identifying the software version of a mobile phone
Should you mobile phone feature in the table below but, nevertheless, not function with the mobile phone
preparation with Bluetooth interface, this could be due to the software on your phone. The software versions
tested by Audi are also listed in the table below. You can identify your mobile phone’s software by pressing the
following buttons on the handset:
Motorola
Select: Menu – Settings – Phone settings – More information – SW version

Nokia

Samsung
*#1234# or, depending on type, *#9999#

BENQ Siemens
*#06# and the left display key

You can get a software update for your phone from the manufacturer or from your network provider. For some
mobile phones, you can even download the software yourself from the Internet.

Nokia E51 contacts

About contacts with E51, as with all Nokia Symbian phones, you should use this application:

http://europe.nokia.com/A4143881

It works in A5/S5 with phone preparation in armrest (I have tried it personally in my car), with bluetooth of course. MMI will show all contacts, but no missed, called, received numbers.

I have a Nokia E51. Installed the software indicated in C99s reply above using Nokia PC Suite and the contact sync perfectly. Missed call, dialled numbers, etc are not retained when the ignition is switched off.

If you have a multi-function steering wheel its very convenient to store some of your commonly used numbers by using "Store Name" say the name and number and off you go!
