Hi guys,

Thinking about the idea of putting a performance air filter kit on my car. A5 sportback 187bhp multitronic gbox fwd. In the process of remapping my car so should be pushing 225-230bhp and just wanted advice on just getting a bit of sound without changing exhausts(until later atleast)?

thanks :)

Best air filters for cars and bikes are the BMC or K and N or similar washable filters, as far as I know.
filters like K&N that promises more air flow and uses oil to trap dirty sound louder but not very good for engine. problem 1 is the oil can/will eventually cover the MAF sensor, so the car will have bad performance or you need new MAF. problem 2 is more airflow is due to larger opening of the filter media, so worse filtration.

my observation in the last 30 years of watching filter reviews is that stock air filter is the best for every day driving. other air filters sound louder and may perform better at high RPM, but is worse for low-med RPM used everyday.

FindAlex mate I totally dissagree with you, these washable filters are the best cos they trap more particles and let more air through. I have used them for many many years and they are GREAT.

Alex note that as far as I know NO vehicle manufacturer makes filters so they purchase cheap stuff. They do not pay for quality.
I guess I need to update my research. When I had my TDI, there were lots of examples of MAFs being ruined... especially the VW/Audi ones that use a film which can't be cleaned properly vs the old style wires that CAN be cleaned.

Your research is correct all that will happen is damage to the MAF and potentially to the turbo.

Almost right :)

K&N will let through more particles than a paper oem (there has been tests on this) , but you're right the oil thing on maf has been covered so much over last 10 years, usually its from over oiling, or the maf was dying already.

I've used k&n on every I've owned in last 20 years, hundreds of thousands of kms, and over a dozen cars.... Never once replaced a MAF sensor or had an engine failure due to particulates.
