My wife is from Plymouth but we live in Florida so the top is up about once a month! As for your shifting issue, I'd say you need to take the wheel off and replace the paddles on the back of the wheel. It sounds like a wire is chafed and the wiring is part of that paddle, not a separate harness.

My car is in Florida, so she's a Floridian lady. I'll go under the assumption that you misunderstood and weren't intentionally being offensive.
