B&O Subwoofer Upgrade

My standard sub unfortunately was sounding raspy and needed replacing so after a bit of research I found that the B&O Subwoofer can simply by swapped in to both replace and upgrade at same time :)

I also took the opportunity to Dynamat the whole rear shelf to both seal all the air holes but also eliminate any vibrations from the upgraded sub.

For reference the Part number of the B&O Sub is 8T0035412D , note the standard sub code is 8T0035412. Ie the "D" signifies the B&O.

It's a pig of a job as its very confined apologies for the poor pictures but I'm not very good at being a contortionist !

The process is simple, you need to remove the speaker grill covers to access the hidden screws (not forgetting the one underneath in boot).

Next remove C Pillar covers, carefully these are held by push in clips so a little bit of gentle persuasion and you can pull them off.

Rear parcel shelf is also held in by push clips (after you've removed the screws under grills) you need to lift up the edge nearest the seats and then pull the shelf forward towards the front of the car to release the rear clips. Note you can't do this without prior removal of the C Pillar covers.

Subs then easily accessible to remove the remaining screws.

I purchased three packs of Dynamat which was spot on to cover whole shelf. This is the stuff I used...

Re installation is the reverse of the above !

Re the standard sub verses the B&O sub the latter is noticeably heavier in weight due to more powerful magnet. End result the the bass is noticeably more powerful and deeper.

Nice easy mod that uses the standard set up including amp.

I am going to change my sub. In the sportback, the sub is a joke. So I went to my local
audio shop and he came up with a MB Quart QB-410A flat subwoofer with build in amp.
It fits nicely in the boot and won't take up too much space.
The car in the picture seems to be an A3.
No clue how its going to sound, but I will post an update Friday after the install.

Ive always wondered, why does the sub fire down in to the trunk, would it sound better the other way round using the trunk as a box?

Also how much of an improvement did the Dynamat make? I used it all along the bottom of the rear shelf as it was easily accessible from the trunk and to be honest it made no difference!

Don't think it's made a hue difference in fairness as the A5's are pretty well built do not suffer from vibrations really. It has also blocked up a load of holes and gaps in the rear shelf which has made a difference.

It's hard to judge as I've changed both the sub and done Dynamat at same time. But the set up now is a lot better.

Even at high volume there was no vibration from the rear whereas the front was starting to vibrate so I'm sure the Dynamat was doing something
Nice write up.

Now the next question is will an aftermarket sub fit in that space (how big??) and will the B&O amp power it?

I did a reasonable amount of research on this first and found that most reckon the B&O amp wouldn't be powerful enough to drive a powerful aftermarket sub. A lot of the aftermarket subs are in custom enclosures in one form another.

Me personally I looks the OEM (+) look and to be honest the B&O sub is plenty powerful enough for my tastes. Particularly as my favourite sound track is heard by opening the window ;)

Hate to bring up an old thread... Did you need to upgrade the stock amp to upgrade to the B&O sub?

I didn't upgrade my B&O amp. I replaced my B&O sub with a JL10W0-4 simply because I had two new ones never installed laying around and decided to try it.
It made a noticeable difference/improvement over the B&O.
The OP had a stock sound system not B&O.. So I'm asking if he had to upgrade his stock amp to power the B&O sound system... I don't have a B&O amp... I understand that the stock sound system and B&O have different amps.

No the only change was the sub swap over, amp remained the same and there is/was a notable sound improvement with the B&O sub.

You Put a 4 Ohm sub on the original amp? I tought, It needs 8 Ohm
I know this is an old thread, but, how do you remove the speaker covers, do you just prize them off using a suitable trim tool, or are there screws under the shelf in the boot?

JG
I only did mine the other month and can't remember, Im sure they do just pop off. I must have put a write up somewhere when I done mine. I'll see if I did
Cheers, that would be great.

I didn't but the more I think about it the more certain I am they come off with a trim tool. I remember hitting them down to get them back in place.
Thanks for the info, I'll be removing once it stops raining in Scotland, so that'll be around July, lol.

I had a quick look over the weekend, they do look quite brittle, need to take the softly, softly approach me thinks. I've got the trim tool set, so half way there already.

Cheers

Use the snapguide link I posted earlier. Even though it's not specifically for an A5 Coupe, the basics of it still apply.
