Hello chaps....

I am looking at Audi S5s as a potential next car. I have dismissed 997s as they have a lot of quality issues.

I also see Audi S5 have a hell of a lot of issues.. would you say that this is a fair comment? i will be looking a year old S5.:)

I have a 1 year old S5 (delivered 26 Mar, 08) with 11,000 miles and all I have done is regular service at 5000 miles (oil and filter), and put on Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S tires for the winter. NO PROBLEMS!! I love the car and I really don't baby it at all--I have had it up to 136 mph and I tend to jump on it from signal to signal (old drag racing habit). I keep it clean and check levels but no attention has been required. Quite honestly, it is probably the best car I have owned in my 50 years of driving (and fun!!:2thumbsup:)

Not sure what you mean here? I have both an S5 and a 997.2 and have not experienced any quality issues.

What have your heard, specifically?

Not necessarily... I've had my '09 S5 since August of last year and have had no issues.

What is this laundry list of "issues" that you're referring to specifically?

As with all cars some will experience some problems and some won't but the car as a whole isn't plagued with issues. If your refering to issues you've read on the forum then you have to remember that this is a world wide forum with a couple thousand members with the same car so it is bound to look like there are a lot of problems. I've had mine over a year now and only had one issue that was easily solved and a couple of minor ones.

I'm happy with the cars reliability.

No. aThere is no indication of major issues that affect everyone.

I love the 997. Think its a fab looking thing... just was heavily researching the car and i realised that there are quite a few rebuilds which end up costing about £8k! I know of 2 chaps at present who have a 2004 and a 2006 year car and are having the issue now... also quite a few low mileage 997s have had engines replaced. I think quality issues have plagued the 996 and 997. The engines on the 997 has issues with the pistons... causing internal engine damage. Owners experience tappin sounds from the engine.. i.e the piston. People say it is rare... but as i said 2 chaps going through it now, also there was a car in the official porsche garage going through the same issue when one of the chaps took it in for a fix... hmm porsche tend not to have the greatest of service too. Most of the Porsche owners seem to go for the Porsche extended warranty too which just seems crazy to me. on a 2005 car which costs £35000 they would pay £1500 to insure the parts and labour with porsche and also have to have their service with them which will cost the earth as they will replace everything!

I am sure they are fab cars.. just a few rotten ones but i am scared to be faced witha engine rebuild of £8k so i am am off the idea of the porsche. love them but i would rather watch others drive them!

I was just flicking though this site.. notice people talking about vibration issues... electronic issues... stuff like that... a few older posts where people have had real headaches with the dealers...

I use to owne a black Audi TT coupe 225. loved it to bits... sold it and got a new S2000... just miss the quality... hence back to Audi as a next car...

S5 Test drive booked for the 28th March!!!!! Cant wait...

shame about the 997.. but a year old S5 might just be the right move for me....

The 996 is well known for engine problems, the 997 less so. Earliest 997's are 54 Reg and I don't think there are any serious issues from 2006 on. Ex Audi sales person now works at local Porker Garage and I have to admit I was seriously tempted BUT. Image in CC UK is not the best and values have plummeted.

A forum is always going to be heavy in things that are not right. When something is wrong, people go looking for answers and will post about it. When its right they dont post.

The vibration issues hit a significant minority but there is a service bulletin on it so it should cease to be a problem. There were minor issues such as door sensors playing up on early models (new sensor put in under warrenty) or one of the LEDs would go out (replaced under warrenty).

The car is coming up to two years old. The first 6-12 months are more prone to faults appearing on a brand new model of any make. The faults that have appeared have generally been minor ones which are easily fixed under a service bulletin or a quick visit to get it replaced.

The 997's have actually had very few engine failures. They are just well known, as the car is costly and as such, the owners speak out about the issues. The cars are pushed hard. By all accounts, 997 issues have been dealt with fairly by Porsche. I have not had any issue with mine. That said, I don't track mine.

I am one of the folks with a vibration issue in my A5. Just brought it in, and was told to swap out my winter tires and bring back with original tires (I had the car one week before the snows went on, so this could be a balance issue, but I don't think so) We will see how Audi, and my dealer treats me.

I hope they treat me fairly, but as others have said, this is a known issue, so I suspect I will be taken care of in a timely manner.

All in all, I enjoy the car, and am happy with my decision to buy.

happy issues

I got a ticket because it 'looked and sounded too fast' even though I was driving 5 under(!).

No issues

My only issue is potholes in the Northeast U.S....hit them twice and both times ended up with multiple bent rims...they were BIG potholes. In the garage right now to repair the rims, been gone five days because they shipped a rim to a specialist, and I'm am in deep withdrawal...can't wait to get it back today. It's been virturally glitch free, or nothing beyond what I now consider normal in a modern car that has more electronics than you can shake a stick at...not like I've been suffering these five days either; a4 convertible...

I had a first year 997 (2005) and now have a first year S5.
The 997 gave me the following problems:
Center air vent (AC/Heat) toggle broke - Replaced under warranty.
Alternator whine - Replaced under warranty.
Squeaky clutch - Fixed under warranty.
Creaking noises from rear window area - Multiple visits to the dealer before solution found.

The S5 is at the dealer today for the following:
Inoperable keyless entry lock/unlock - Dealer is trying to tell me that my car doesn't have that option even though I have Advanced Key.
Cigarette power socket not working.
One DRL LED out.

I'd say these are all things that either happen randomly or get ironed out and should be expected somewhat with the first run of a new model.

I'm not sure where you're getting this (mis)information from about 997, but try reliable sources before you make comments. If you're considering 997.2 it's so radically different from 997.1 in terms of engine and gearbox that it really should have a different project number.

As others have said forums are full of all the problems. However no one ever goes on them saying my car is perfect with no complaints.

I had a single problem with my car. A $.10 connector was not installed correctly. The dealer swapped out every piece of MMI system electronics before it was discovered the entire problem was in the connector on the roof antenna.
