Audi A5 - Convertible - Starting problems - 2009

Have a Audi A5 Convertible 2009, 115k on the clock, took it to garage last week because it was struggling to start, £900.00 lighter it wouldn't turn over, tried today it is trying but the more I try the flatter it goes, does anyone know if its the starter motor or battery, The garage told me the chain wants replacing, but I took it to another garage and they said it doesn't. Does anyone know when things start to go wrong it continues, never had an audi before, thanks in advance.

Timing chain assumes a 2.0T petrol engine. Timing chain stretch and a faulty chain tensioner design are known problems with the early 2.0T petrol engine.
A couple of references:
B8/B8.5 Buyer's Guide and "Looking to buy" Question Thread (see the entire first post)
Timing chain stretch affects two things mainly: engine timing, of course, and timing tensioner extension. If the chain stretches enough, the tensioner extends too far and fails, which can cause major damage to the engine. This happened to a colleague of mine at a previous job. We had our timing chain and tensioner replaced as a preventive measure. --g

I would go back to the garage and ask them why they recon its fixed when it dosn't start now.
They should have told you about the chain before "fixing" the car. They obviously didn;t fix it. Get their responce in wring and go to trading standards or citisens advice.

Nicola, oh dear!! Please tell us more about the car eg manual or diesel, plus which engine you have. You need to find a good independent VAG specialist and get the car there for some honest advice and help. How can any business take 900 squid and NOT fix the problem is beyond belief!!!
