Are you iritated by the S5 first gear jerkiness?

I have a meeting with a regional director of Audi re this issue on Friday of next week. There are many compliants about this "antio stall" feature on the forum, but I don't believe many people have actually reported it back to thier dealer. If you are irritated with the difficulty of smooth take off and smooth driving in stop/start traffic, then please let me know before next friday and I will pass this on. I don't know how to set up a proper pole on this site so either let me know by responding to this thread or possibly some other member in the know could set up a pole for me. Ideally I just need to know roughly where you are based in the world and how long you have had the car.

Many thanks

Tsb 2017657/3 - Anti Stall Behaviour Is Gone!

I just took my car (S5, 4.2L) in for its 25,000km service. There were a couple of minor things I asked the dealer to investigate, including the fact that the once in a while the engine seemed to almost stall while sitting in traffic after highway speed driving; it would catch itself, the rpms would then jump and the car would shake quite a bit.

I actually had the car at the dealer in April for a few hours and had them check this issue as well - they replaced the air cleaner and strainer under warranty, performed some software flashes, but it didn't solve the problem.

When I got my car back yesterday, I was told there was an ECM software upgrade for the rough idle complaint. My invoice says T.B. #2017657/3.

Is the rough idle gone? Too soon to tell.

However, I can tell you that all of the anti-stall programming that prevented us from engaging 1st gear at anything between 500 and 1300 rpms is now totally gone! I can hold just about any rpm with the clutch depressed. The rpms don't jump up as I'm trying to engage 1st gear. I no longer have to adjust my driving technique between the S5 and my GF's A3. In traffic, the car has been completely transformed and is now easy to manage.

The dealer is (hopefully) sending me a copy of the TSB. I will post it as soon as it arrives.

Mine went into garage for MMI update and they changed the the throttle reponse. Before the change it was very easy to stall. After the change as you release the clutch the engine pulses slightly. I can rererve up steep hills without using accelerator. Before update I'de need 2000+ revs!
Sorry to bring up an old topic but I have the same 'issues' and live in the netherlands, my dealer could not find any information about T.B. #2017657/3 or software update 24f3. Anyone in europe recieved this update?
I am road testing my new S5 with 300 miles on it only this afternoon with Audi dealership rep. It is experiencing terrible jerkiness from a standing stop into first and again into second gear. My wife drove (after complaining about my driving ability) and said it was a problem in the clutch or tranny. she is good with a stick also...no not what your all thinking.

Anybody have some definitive advice for this issue?
I had this TSB/software update performed last year and it did help with the idle and 1st gear engagement. Unfortunately, it didn't help the 1-2 shift which is still hit-or-miss from a smoothness standpoint (and I've been driving nothing but manual trasmissions for the last 20+ years ).

I would bet that your problems are Clutch/Bearing/Fork related. I suffered with this forever, had the clutch fixed and the problem was gone, for 500 miles. I just got my fork and throwout bearing replaced again and now it is consistent. We shall see how long this lasts...
I picked up my S5 in Dec '09, and I thought the jerkiness was just because the gearbox was so new....apparently not. I do find it quite annoying that I can't go from 1st to 2nd smoothly, although I have been able to take off from a stop (most of the time) smoothly, although I never look at the exact rpm.

On a side note, when I first get in the car, I have quite a hard time getting her into second. It last for the first 5-10min of my drive, and then its much smoother, but I did think it was odd...

Btw...this is my first post, found for the forum recently. Wohoo! I love my S5....ok, now that that is out of my system...
Sorry to revive this thread but Im battling with Audi UK at the moment to try to cure the kangeroo character in my S5...

Seems the UK dealers do not have the TSB that the US dealers were issued with re. the ECM update for the rough idle (no. 2017657/3) which cures the anti stall problem.

Has anyone had any luck with UK dealers on this? Or are we all destined to be hopping and lurching around forever?!

TSB are for US market only.

For EU (maybe RoW) it's called TPI (Technical Product Information).
This is my #1 complaint for my 2009 S5 with 37,000 miles. It's not a big deal when I'm driving, but with a passenger, it's annoying. Does the new transmission fix this? I'm planning on selling or trading in the S5 next year.
Thread back from the dead :yikes: 2 weeks in to ownership and this is most annoying as you pull away in first!

TX.
