Are you iritated by the S5 first gear jerkiness?

I have a meeting with a regional director of Audi re this issue on Friday of next week. There are many compliants about this "antio stall" feature on the forum, but I don't believe many people have actually reported it back to thier dealer. If you are irritated with the difficulty of smooth take off and smooth driving in stop/start traffic, then please let me know before next friday and I will pass this on. I don't know how to set up a proper pole on this site so either let me know by responding to this thread or possibly some other member in the know could set up a pole for me. Ideally I just need to know roughly where you are based in the world and how long you have had the car.

Many thanks

Indeed I do agree... I got to try it loads at all different speeds and watched the behaviour... clever software really... just annoying! ... however, most annoying was in traffic rolling at 3mph, just below the speed of the car in 1st at tickover... I had to ride the clutch constantly or stop-start, revving like a chav.
I wasn't irritated, but was concerned that I might've broken my car...
but after a week or two, I can aggressively or passenger-friendly shift through gears with no jolt.

It takes adapting.
Very clever software indeed.

PS I had to Google "Tickover" to find out it meant Idle.

Agreed... just have to master that clutch! (I guess that's a given for any manual car)

Sorry, I'll try to use more 'international' language in future! It's hard to remember there's a lot of regional/familiar jargon... or 'colloquialisms' to give them their proper name!

Over here, Idle means teenager!

How you must have hated all that revving with your Millteks!
Oh, it's such a bore! ;)
Pun intended?
Absolutely!
In which case - well done! :p
what do u mean anti stall? ive stalled out numerous times..(trafic and talkin on cell in NYC cause that) but seriously i have the 1st-2nd jerkiness as well, always attributed it to the learning curve of this newer clutch not quite ferrari and not quite porsche either. ohh well
the first gear jerkiness problem was a turnoff for me when i first test drove this car, but as soon as i mastered the clutch and everything, the car runs very smoothly from first to second unless i'm shifting at 6000+rpm.

gsshin23, can you tell me our technique for take off to avoid jerkiness, particularly in traffic? tks.
I always wondered what everyone was talking about as well with this first gear jerkiness on take off. Mines really smooth. Infact i can get it to roll fine as well without tapping on the gas.

Much of it has to do with timing; you should not force the gear into position. Because the car is a rear biased all wheel drive, it is particularly diffiucult to shift well, and it took me a long time to get the hang of it. I have eliminated much of the jerkiness but there is still some left at high revs. Just experiment with the clutch (you should also always fully release it before accelerating again particularly for first to second shifts) and just learn the feel of your car; I can't give you an exact method. Hope this helped.

Likewise.
I agree gsshin. It's all in the feel of the car. You just have to drive it at those speeds and situations a little before you know what it's going to do. I drove my favorite onramp a couple of times and the second was the hairiest. I am still getting to learn the torque of the individual gears.

I only have 1500 miles on mine but am willing to practice till I get it better.
Oh that's right, it's thinking about practicing that keeps me up at night. However, it's knowing it's in the garage that puts me to sleep.
After I got comfortable with the car I took it into the dealer which did some kind of update. Afterwards, my driving habits had to be relearned again. I would say that things are still a work in progress.
maybe we should try this with the ASR/ESP switched off?
it might be affecting this
