I'm having a bit of a nightmare with my 2007 A5 at the moment .

In January I started getting a random ESP/ABS light - it went in for a checkup and the tech diagnosed it as a faulty ABS module.

We took the ABS module out and sent it off the ECU Testing, but they bench tested it and said it was fine. The tech then continuity tested the wiring and it checked out - there wasn't really anywhere else to go and he felt the symptoms all pointed to a faulty ABS module, so I ordered a second hand module and the plan was to fit to check but now with lockdown that's had to go on hold for the foreseeable.

I also had a wheel speed sensor go, which was replaced during the diagnostics - the faults for that are hanging about, but my cruise control is working (which is didn't when the sensor was broken) so I don't know if those codes aren't clearing because of the lack of communication with the ABS module.

I did a scan a few days ago though and noticed i've now got a lot of faults relating to the parking brake module as well which is a new development.

I'm a bit concerned various modules are going to start cacking themselves and it's just going to be chasing problems round the car from now on. Is it possible the parking brake issues are related to the ABS?

I cleared the codes and rescanned today so these are the recurring ones - any advice or comments appreciate as I'm getting a bit concerned about the old wagon.

It's going back into the garage once lockdown is over, but I'm keen to see if anyone else has had similar before (for peace of mind more than anything)? Anecdotally it seems like there's more and more getting these faults now - are the cars starting to get to an age where the electrics are going to start flaking out?

Battery issues can cause all sorts of odd error code readings, definitely worth eliminating that possibility first off- even though it may seem random or unlikely.
Seems odd otherwise, unless there's a loom issue- so check for any signs of dampness inside the rear quarters where there's lots of wiring, relays & fuses too.
Good luck, as I don't think it is usual or to be expected even on an early model.

Battery was replaced in November - was still on the original battery so had it tested when it was in for a service in November which confirmed it was knackered, so hopefully that's ok. The voltage reads as fine during a scan too but i'll get it re-checked with a proper tester.

I had a feel about inside the boot side panels yesterday and they felt dry with no obvious signs of ingress but the problems did start when it felt like it was raining constantly - not sure if it's a coincidence but can't rule it out.

Feel a bit helpless as the garage is shut - hate the feeling when the car is under the weather.

Yes, frustrating at the moment..
Sounds unlikely to be your battery unless its been sat for a while (over 2 weeks)- I got one of the Ancel testers which tells you the health & status of the battery and then got a decent CTEK charger to regen & then maintain the battery, so they are the poerfect combo & peace of mind:

The CTEK devices are truly the business and extend my motorbike battery life from 2 up to 4 or even 5 years, and even managed to bring my VAN flat bettery back to like!!!! Did you get your new battery programmed to your car mate.......

Agreed Simon- the CTEK has regenerated mine, so I haven't had to change it at all- so now it';s 10 years old and yet the Ancel tester still says 'Good Battery' - no issues- Happy days!

It's back in the garage now - checking battery/voltage was the next plan of attack.

Tested as giving 13.3v under load, battery test showed that was good so looking at alternator now. Tech seems fairly confident that's going to be the issue.

Between that, pads and discs and a faulty EGR thermostat, plus drilling out an ABS sensor that failed, this is going to be a fun visit to the garage.

Alternator is in, giving 14.4 (i think), which the mechanic is happy with - he said most of the faults cleared after this, ABS and brake lights are off, but the ESP light stayed on which points to a fault with the yaw sensor (the first error which came up when all of this started).

He took the seat out, couldn't see anything wrong, but then he looked in the plug and said two of the connections had corrosion on them. Tomorrow the plan is the cut the wires and put a new plug on but looks like we're getting there.

Fixing the corrosion on the ESP sensor plug sorted some issues, still having problems with the rear left ABS sensor so some testing on the wiring found corroded wiring towards the rear of the car, and then there were still some residual communication issues with the ABS module - that was found to be a corroded wire in the front wing. Was road tested last night and no faults came up for the first time in five months.

Car has a clean bill of health now so going to collect it later today (with much lighter pockets).

£1600 for parts and labour (18 hours labour all in, including five hours spent diagnosing the wiring faults, which i think is probably a bit light based on my conversations with the garage throughout the course of this).

That's alternator supplied and fitted, changing rear pads and discs, thermostat supplied and fitted, changing rear ABS wheel speed sensor (the old one needed drilled out), removing the ABS module to send away for testing, reinstalling it and bleeding the brakes, plus tracing the wiring/connection faults using ODIS.

Sorry to hear all that- it's quite a list. How come so much corrosion? Surely there has been some water ingress, although you say both the front & rear wiring has been corroded, so it's probably weather related- did you mention the car came from Ireland originally?

It came from Coleraine in Northern Ireland, yep - whether that would be a factor i'm not sure but my door speakers weren't working properly when i got the car - they'd basically disintegrated! There's a few bits under the car which are a bit rusty, but it's 13 years old now so I don't know how much is to be expected (this is only my second car).

I'll have a chat with the mechanic about it when I got up to collect but the ESP sensor under the seat he thinks something must have been spilled at some point or it's got wet. Not so sure about the corrosion to the wires, I had a repair done on the front wing where the wiring runs so whether something has happened then i'm not sure but it's a possibility. Have seen a few A6s on various forums etc which have had corroded wiring running under the sill covers so might just be one of these things that can happen if various unlucky stars align?
