I've been getting 21-23 mpg in my A5 tip, mostly stop-and-go driving, in extreme heat (105-110), with the a/c cranked. Haven't had an opportunity to do a lot of highway driving lately but I expect pretty good numbers when I do.

One of the biggest surprises in the A5 has been how fuel efficient it is. Seeing 24-25 in mixed driving and very happy with those numbers.

Gosh darn it, I'm averaging only 17-18mpg in mixed; mostly city! Just out of curiosity, what octane are you using? I've put in 91 octane.

I did spy on the computer a 27mpg of "only" freeway but nowhere near 30. If it makes a difference, my air pressure is at the recommended pressures front and back (I think it's 34 ft., 32 rear?) and on the 19" wheels.

PS: the milage I'm seeing is based on actual fill-up numbers, not the computer. From what I can see, the computer is a bit on the optimistic side.

i'm averaging about 19mpg (US) on my A5 3.2
air pressure 36psi all around
but i rev the engine pretty high
due to the low torque at lower revs
i keep it in a lower gear
i rarely use 6th
usually 3rd and 4th

After break in my S5 is averaging almost 19mpg in mostly suburban driving - skipping gears and coasting when I can. On a recent highway trip I saw 23mpg.

My previous car was a 2006 A4 3.2 and it averaged 23mpg and managed 30mpg highway on one fairly long drive late in its lease life.

Comparing the two for fuel costs per month, given that they share the same size fuel tank I believe, I'm filling the tank twice more per month. Basically, for me, the S5 costs $100 a month more in fuel costs than my 3.2 A4 did.

18-21mpg here in my S5, and I gun it from standstill at almost every other traffic light when driving alone, and when I'm in the city.

Avg. highway speed is 75-80mph.

Performance upgrades:
20" DPEs, 275-35 Toyos / Milltek non-res / AWE down-pipes / H&R COs

When I am behaving myself I can get my S5 into the 27-29 mpg range but when I am not its too easy to get 17 mpg. (UK)

14.4

I'm nearly at 5000 miles, and the on-board computer says I've averged 14.4 U.S since the beginning...it is almost entirely short, suburban trips, or highway commutes into NYC, which always entrails 20 to 30 minutes of stop and go, bumper to bumper traffic. On the two long road trips that I've taken, I've averaged 21.8mpg, but that is in 6th without driving very hard.

For the loss... it seems like the A5 3.2 doesn't get appreciably better gas mileage than the S5 unless you are doing nothing but freeway miles. In the city and in traffic, I'm guessing you would hover around 20mpg in either car. Lame!
