Having shared that trip down memory lane, you'll probably tell me now you actually had a 1.9 TDi Leon anyway....
:D - it was indeed a Leon, the Mk1 Leon FR... aah she was a good 'un. It was also my first "proper car from new".
If you are only planning kids I would go for the Coupe for now!
 - so far... not managed to convince the wife of that... ;)
The point about sat nav is that you will get a large percentage back at resale on a V6/V8 and some will say they are difficult /impossible to sell without that option.

Your shout though... I went for the NAv but do rate Tom Tom apart from all the bloody wires, suction cups etc etc..
So if I were to decide on the Nav should I go for the standard Nav or the HDD one - is it worth the further £400-odd premium? Apart from a 3D view what does it give me?

I'm just not sure about the Sat Nav, if it come down to it it'll probably go as the spec I'm after is probably just a bit more than I can afford if I'm being honest with myself...

Thanks yet again for all your help, I'm getting there. Hope to have a back to back drive of a 2.0TFSi and a 3,0 TDi in the coming week or so. :)

HDD all the way as it is part of a 'Tech Pack' which includes Cruise and AMI. Also had HD space for music and a DVD player. Standard Nav recommends you also specify the CD Changer and by the time you add Crusie and AMI as well it is MORE expensive! I am not sure why the option even still exists.

I agree with HAshluck on the SatNav point . The DVD version is fine 95% of the time though, especially with live (ish) traffic updates.

Interesting debate on the sat nav. £1.5 to £2k is lot of money. I opted to go without the sat nav... which was supported by someone at Audi who shall remain nameless who said that a 3rd party sat nav was much better...

Just another opinion.

Was that John at Audi who has shares in Tom Tom?

I think the issues are.

1. MAintaining Residuals
2. Dislike of rubber suckers, wires and other bits.

Sure Tom Tom et al are great but what a b* fiddle!

This debate will never end; it'll always been down to personal choice. However, to me, the benefits of something fully integrated are worth the cost. And, integrated systems look better - I'm off to get milk out of my integrated fridge to make a coffee. When I'm done, I'll put my mug into the integrated dishwasher. (Oven, washing machine etc. etc.) Anyone for freestanding appliances and IKEA units...?

You're right, the debate will never end and your point about you home is a good one, however, I cannot remember the last time I made a coffee in my car or stored milk in it or washed dishes in it, so this argument sort of falls flat, doesn't it?

That's lame my friend - had hoped for better from a man of your mental capability. LOL
PS - have you got an A5 to attach to your Tom Tom yet? (ouch - below the belt)
Only kidding
LOL:laughinatabove:! I don't have a Tom Tom, I think they're over-priced too!!

More than compass in hand, I suspect! (only kidding). What I should have added is that I have a Garmin - more functionality, clearer display, wide screen (I am getting old, you know) and about £50 less than the equivalent Tom Tom. Even the man in Halfords admitted that the Garmin is better and you pay for the name with Tom Tom (and, yes they do sell both). Also, where does the nonsense about trailing wires come from? The battery lasts for four hours!

Have just had a week of fun driving around in a Big LWB Citroen 3.0 Dieseal Van whilst moving furniture to France. It had Traffic MAster which worked great in UK. BUT in France needed the old TomTom930GPS which DOES need trailing wires to get updated Traffic. Sure the charging wires aren't needed but GPS Traffic thing is.

Thank goodness I am now safely home to my A5 with Integrated Nav, no faffing. (Glass in hand now at home... well had to fill empty van with something for return journey!)

It is horses for courses I know and whilst trailing wires may be OK in a VAn I am glad I have the Audi kit in my A5.

Cheers

I would think about how long you plan to hold on to the car. In five or less years time the cam-belt will need changing. On a V6 with three rads its is going to be expensive!

Chris, no cambelt on 3.0TDi, chain - for life
That's a better design then. Is it just on the 3.0TDi or all V6 engines?

I know a neighbour with an A4 Avant 2.7TDI was quoted 1500GBP for a new cam-belt and it was two days work!

Chris, I had an 2.7TDI A6 before my current A5 (same engine) and am pretty certain both the 2.7 and 3.0 TDI engines are chain driven belts, however the water pump and associated anciliaries are belt driven, so am a little confused by your neighbours comments. Appreciate his is an A4, but wouldn't have thought the 'core' design would be any different between models.

The following is a para from a long report on Audi's new TDI engines:

The 2.7-litre V6 TDI is also part of Audi's new range of V engines and has a chain drive for camshafts and oil pump. The cylinder spacing in the new engine block is now 90 millimetres. This gives the engine a compact length of just 444 millimetres. The engine block is made from vermicular graphite cast iron, a successful combination of low total engine weight, high strength and good acoustic properties.

Cheers

On my A4 V6 there is a belt on the front of the engine which also drives the water pump. This is the same on the 2.7 TDi on the A4. To change this belt the radiator(s) have to come out. On the A4 2.4 V6 petrol there is just one. On the A4 2.7 TDi there are three! This is the belt he was quoted on.

That was a main dealer quote. You could have it done else where, but:

a) Would you risk it.
b) It would knock a few quid of the resale value if you traded it in for another Audi.

I've got 3.0TDi. Can't see why the rads need to be disconnected to change auxiliary belt. It's right at the front of the car, not much in the way.

2.7TDi same as 3.0TDi externally, just different bits inside for smaller capacity, less power.

Chris, think your neighbour's:
got a different generation engine
needs other work doing
got a creative quote!
