Hello folks

I'm new to the Forum and also Audi. I’m currently thinking of replacing my 5 Series with either a BMW 320i a 325i M Sport Coupe or an A5. I currently have an Black A5 1.8 TFSI Sport (on 19” Ys) on test drive for a few days and I'm a bit puzzled - the UK A5 brochure states that all A5s have high gloss black grilles and a single rolled chrome exhaust on the left and right side.

So when it turned up today I was a bit puzzled to find a grey matt grille, twin exhausts on the left side and in, what appears to be, a stainless steel finish - no chrome tail pipes in sight?

Can anyone shed any light before I phone the dealer tomorrow morning?

Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Depending on the date of the brochure you have, the 1.8T may not have been an option when it was printed.

The specs (except 19" Y's) you have mentioned, I believe, are standard for the 1.8 model. I'm sure one the 1.8 owners will be along shortly to confirm that.

Could you also please put your location in your profile details so that forum users know which market applies to you as this is an international forum. Thanks.

How's that?

It is a UK 2008 Model Year (2nd Edition) and includes prices and spec for the 1.8TFSI which is even more puzzling?

Cheers

Hi Addy, I've a 1.8 and can confirm the grey matt grille and the exhaust for the 1.8 are twin on the left hand side - the broucher is actually wrong!

As to the exhausts they are also stainless steel finish, but check out http://www.a5oc.com/forums/showthread.php/1-8t-owners-2598/index.html?t=2598&highlight=exhaust

you can at least make them look better.

Other than that I'm loving my 1.8, its great car and I would highy recommend it.

Such a brochure definitely is wrong, in other countries I've seen the brochures do mention 1.8T coming with matte grille and exhausts on the left side only - and that is how the car comes from the factory like people have mentioned here in this thread. The same goes for some other smaller engines in Audi A4 B8 and presumably for future small-engine A5s like possible 2.0 TDI.

Luckily chrome exhausts can be added later and the grille should be easy to change too if one so desires (requires removal of front bumper though).

A few (controversial) threads about this:

Those covers look great Atum, thanks for the tip and link but still I'm miffed about the grey grille and maybe there's room for Audi to honour their broucher and replace it FOC with a high gloss black one??

Whilst emailing, what's the different between the Brilliant Black and Phantom Black, other than it's a pearl effect - is it really that noticeable in the 'real' world?

Thanks again

Yes, the pearl effect on Phantom Black is particularly noticeable when the sun is shining on it. Even though I chose Brilliant Black, I still have an appreciation for Phantom Black. I really like how it "sparkles" when it's clean and has the sun shining on it. It definitely catches your eye.

Check out these threads for opinions on Phantom vs. Brilliant Black:

Mine's the same and I LOVE my little 1.8T ... the A5 1.8T is Audi's dirty little secret so don't tell anyone!

Sure my grill is very dark grey rather than black but the only people who will notice are other A5/S5 drivers! The tail pipes look awful but as Atum has posted this can be easily (and fairly cheaply) fixed.

I'm running mine as a company car and was similarly tempted by the 325i Msport coupe ... I'm so glad I stuck with the A5! Sure the BMW would eat the 1.8T for dinner in a race but that's not my cup of tea. As I'm sure you're already finding, the 1.8TFSI in the A5 is actually a very capable car although it's no rocket.

If you're looking in the coupe segment then surely it's a case of form over function in which case the A5 wins hands down. Definitely a heart over head decision but I'm so glad that's the route I took.

Hello again all

Thanks for all you comments, much appreciated.

Well, I’ve decided to order the A5, but not the 1.8 TFSI but the new 2.O TFSI Quattro available to order from 30th May and deliveries start from mid-August 2008; this what the Audi Information Sheet says that my local dealer has emailed me.

The performance spec is: 211bhp/350Nm and 0 - 62 in 6.5 sec CO2 173 (6.9 for the 2WD version and CO2 154)

Quattro OTR @ £ 30,285 – 2WD OTR @ £28,760 I believe all the usual options still apply.

Brilliant!!!:D

Cheers

2.0 TSFI? I've just ordered the 1.8 and will be waiting till near August anyway, does anyone have any more info on this new engine size? Is it definitely happening, and do you think my 4 week old order may be able to be changed easily? Does anyone have any experience on this?

Thanks :)

According to my experience dealers can change options, but not the actual model of the car (which includes the engine, transmission and drive-train). Changing the engine would thus not be possible. But maybe this is different for the UK, so ask! The dealer might also be able to offer your order slot to someone else and make a new order for you...

The French already have the prices out for their country, 1.8T not even listed there (anymore?) - perhaps because there is a 180 hp 2.0 TFSI in addition to the 211 hp one.

http://www.audiextranet.com/tarifs/A5.pdf (linked from audi.fr A5 page http://www.audi.fr/audi/fr/fr2/new_cars/a5.html).

Do note that the French are quoting November for 2.0 TFSI, but that might concern only the French market of course.

Audi.de seems to have closed their A5/S5 page for a few days now, something is cooking...

That's great info!! Puts me in a real dilema though: I have done all the negotiation with the dealer and just need my boss to sign off on a 3.0TDi tiptronic. Order was going to be placed tomorrow or Monday. Dealer is saying it could be november before I get the car.

I do want auto but am tempted by the 2.0T Quattro especially as I know the engine very well having had it in my A3 for the past three years. Emissions are good for company car tax too. Aggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!

Never considered diesel until I had a 3.0Tdi for the day and was seriously impressed.

Decisions, decisions......

thanks for that info Addy.
So it doesn't look like the auto box will be available on the 2.0 engine, at least from launch...

I'm gutted. :(

Higher performance, lower CO2 and a negligible price difference.

I wonder how much I would get for my 1.8 as a trade in for the 2.0? :)

2.0 TDI specs for France can be seen here, production to start in November if I read correctly...

Cheers. Thanks for that. Hmmmmm. Will have to see the price in Ireland when they come out but the 2.0Tfsi Quattro is looking very appealing now. The emmissions and price on the diesel is only slightly better but the performance of the 2.0 petrol is much better
