A2

We are likely to be looking for an A2 in the next couple of months. Any ideas, views.

Would prefer as late as possible, ideally a Tdi (unless persuaded otherwise). Sport Spec looks good and ideally a Panoramic roof..

Also ideally not too high on the miles or too old, a 2004/05 (FL)would be best.

Cheers

Wtf??? An A2 really?
Wtf??? An A2 really?
Something cheap to insure for lad to use on return from Uni.. Polo getting boring (not black or Diesel!!)
interesting choice....

not saying you are wrong but a 2005 will set you back £6k, which is the same money as
Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI PD 80 GREENLINE 5DR Low Tax, High Economy 2010
Looking for a vaguely interesting Zeroish depreciation motor..hence A2, maybe newer Polo need low insurance yet with some credibility... so we can use it!

Sorry ...Skoda Fabia = coffin dodgers image which young RG will not appreciate.. Local Lib Dem councillor nearby had one (we called him Rodney.. cos he was a plonker' and regularly crashed it when he wasn't sat in his deckchair staring at a wall...

Cheers

Bought an A2 in 2002 for the then wife - 1.4 petrol, some extras and got the panoramic roof. The ex took it with her and is just getting around to replacing it as it's pretty much had it now. I don't have a feelgood factor about the A2 like I had with the A4 and the current 5. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh.

CD Player / Radio has been replaced three times due to overheating in summer, so make sure to check it works.

The panoramic roof was a complete pain in the rear. Was quite nice when it worked (although if you can't stand the thrumming when driving over 30 or so then it was shut pretty quick). Issue was that it works by 2 glass panels retracting over a third panel - and Audi got the tolerances wrong when they designed its opening operation. The entire mechanism was replaced twice and still failed - and keeps failing. Basically depending upon weather conditions, etc. the glass panels sometimes foul on each other, and the roof gets stuck so you can't open/close it. There is a manual override, but it's not pretty. The panoramic roof glass panel joins are running across the roof and they gather water in the rain - so when you open the car door the rain immediately runs into the car, wetting the seat - annoying. I'm not the only one who experienced this - the a2oc.net forum had plenty of people with the same fault. All in all - the panoramic roof is not worth it.

Various other niggles with the car - there is only 1 windscreen wiper so when it's working the car rocks side to side as it's so big. The front flap for accessing oil/water kept getting stuck - but I think by 2005 they had redesigned that part.

It had some plus points though - when you take the rear seats out you get LOADS of room in there, was quite economical (for its day) and I think it still looks quite nice (quirky without being fugly like the Multipla).

If you do go for it, a Tdi would be ideal for economy, but be warned - there isn't much soundproofing and with the gear stick and wheel position you end up feeling like you are driving a bus.

Good luck.

EDIT - forgot something else. Had an intermittent, inconsistent issue. Usually around 30-40mph, light acceleration, would be driving along and suddenly the car would feel like it was braking due to an immediate drop in engine revs, the rev counter would drop to zero and then would return back to normal, all within a second. Very disconcerting on the odd occasion when it happened at much lower speeds, e.g. pulling out of a junction. Audi could never identify the issue as they could never get it to happen and as it was inconsistent in revs/speed/other conditions then it was never resolved.

There was a thread on here a couple of weeks ago where a forumee had bought his lad a new Seat for a bargain price.

As a bloke you couldn't give an A2. I agree with you about Fabias but A2's seem to be exclusively owned by old people or mums as well.

When I left uni I would have given a bollock for a Golf instead I drove my dads Clio (in red with the 1.2 8v engine). Golf would be my vote
Cuppa you could have had a loose connection on the Rev-o-meter that would cause this fault.

Get your lad a focus. Great car to start on. If he complains tell him to take the bus like the rest if students!
check for corrosion on the door hinges which is an inherent problem with the A2's due to the aluminium frame. Pana roof is a big no no; again due to the design
Thanks Morski...

Looking at a Black one... Lad has driving test on Weds, A level results on 15th... hopefully off to Uni.

Focus is what the AA are using for lessons.. but dull and boring.. an A2 should hold it's value too.

Any thoughts on 1.6FSi petrol motor (110bhp) vs only 75 from the 1.4 petrol or Diseasel..

Cheers

you are a hard man mr B.

off to Uni with the tag "the lad with his nans car"

although to be fair when I was his age if anyone had given me a car I wouldnt have cared what it was...

however, have you considered insurance?

Audi A2 is insurance group 13-19 depending on 1.4 diesel or 1.6 petrol.
fabia group 3 to 11
if you want to make him credible at the same time as reducing insurance group..
beefa (Ibiza) from 3...

frankly on what you can save on insurance over 3 years you could fund a new beefa toca compared with the A2.

You'd also have a warranty
He will NOT be taking the car to Uni... we are looking for a replacement for a boring 2002 Polo 1.4 SE (low miles). Just another 'spare car' for us to use locally and kids to use when there's break down or back from Uni.

I bought Polo off my folks when Dad gave up driving. FSH and no real problems, just boring... Thought a sale and buying a BLACK if possible A2 would be an idea. Can insure a 1.6FSi with kids as named drivers for £750 a year.

That's a relief.... I thought you were buying an A2 for your son! What will he be driving while at Uni - and why doesn't he just drive his car home from Uni so that he doesn't have to drive your granny car?

I hope it has satnav BTW ;-)
A2's never had a Nav option TTBOMK... just need a spare cheap to insure hack.. loving non molested Audis as we do an A2 seems to fit the bill... It will not have a PP either! A1PRAT!

He is NOT taking car to Uni that means him being owner and insurer!!

RG
Can't he drive the 7 when back from Uni? I used to drive my old-man's Sierra (Petrol, 2.0L, Red ;-).

Matt.
Audimad will be the expert on here re A2s as he has one

No chance Matt... can't even get cover on the A3 SB q BE!!
ahhh, like others misread your post....family runaround the lad can drive when he is home but you want it to appeal more to you than to him.

A2 therefore Ideal!!
off to Uni with the tag "the lad with his nans car"
You must have Crystal Balls Rackers....that's exactly why we are ditching the Polo... It was 'his Nan's car!!! A replacement will not be... looking at one later with Bose and Leather ;-0 may well look at a Seat on way home..and thanks Cuppa for your tips will probably avoid a Pan Roof!!
