I just bought a 2008 S5 CPO with 12k miles on it today

When I shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd gear I can't get it into 3rd with out a little grind from the transmission. I'm pushing the clutch all the way to floor but cannot get a quick clean shift.

If I slow down and don't try to shift quickly I can get a clean shift no problem.

Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated? I plan on taking it in for service on Monday.

Anyone else have this issue?

That is why it is CPO two years after introduction, you have an undiagnosed throwout bearing issue... Search the forum, you will find many posts and your dealer will have never heard of such a problem.

Seems like a common problem, which is very unfortunate. Throwout bearing goes south and if the original owner drove enough like that it will have done damage to the transmission possibly. When the throwout is going bad or is bad it means you cannot fully disengage the clutch which allows more wear and tear on synchros in your transmission which can lead to symptoms you are having now. You likely need a throwout, possibly clutch parts and possibly a transmission. Sorry.

New trasmission being installed

Took my new S5 into the dealer after only having it for two weeks

They told me today that they will be putting in a new transmission. Luckily the warehouse in Los Angeles had one in stock. Since I live in Northern California it'll be here in two days.

I asked them if the throwout bearing was bad, they didn't seem very happy with my knowledge of the problem as I've seen detailed here in the forum. I actually printed out another users account of the same issue and gave it to them this morning when i dropped off the car just in case

Hopefully they have diagnosed the problem properly and I don't have to take the car back in several times before they get it right.

I'll post updates when I get the car back.

New Transmission

Picked up my car today from the dealer. The new tranny feels great. Clutch feels fantastic as well! Much better than before I dropped it off.

They did not replace the throwout bearing, and I don't even know if they checked it? When I asked whether they checked the throwout bearing the service advisor told me to "let them do their job, and that just because I read on some Audi forum that this seemed to be a known issue, he assured me that there were only a very small percentage of cars affected by this", in a very condescending manner.

If I had gone into my service appointment acting like a know all asshole regarding what I thought was wrong with my car, I could understand him reacting this way. I however took the opposite approach and was very laid back with him from the start.

Some people are just assholes regardless of how respectful you are with them.

Needless to say, when I receive the service survey from Audi I'm going to rip this guy a new one. Plus, this was a certified car that I bought from this dealership. How the hell did they miss the fact the transmission was bad when they certified it? The car was on thier lot for less than 30 days before I bought it.

I think it's safe to assume the service technician would test drive the car during the certification process? Right? I certainly noticed it the first day I took it home from the dealership.

Anyway, I am happy with the car in end. Hopefully this is the last time I have to deal with this issue.

Glad it came back well and happy! Sorry about their service adviser. I mean it's a $205 retail part to replace something that is several thousand dollars in labor to replace again if it fails. I hope that the throwout is fine, then again it's their labor dime but it's your down time, which isn't particularly smart for them.
