My good lady in her wisdom decided she would like an Audi, so we found a 2012 A5 Coupe in white that she liked. However, for a supposedly "quality" car it has headlights that are about as bright as a couple of glow-worms. Nice Concert stereo (OK it will only take one CD) but it will take a 64Gb SD card to play all the mp3 she will ever have etc - but decent headlights - certainly not !

In my ignorance (I have a Nissan 350Z), I brought some Osram Nightbreaker bulbs in the hope that they would make matters better. Handbook says it is possible to pull headlights forward and change bulbs - really ? If you have the hands of a 4 year old you may be able to do it - but not with normal size hands - it seems the only way to do it is to take the front bumper off. :crying:

If I am having to do that, I might as well get some bi-xenons and end up with some decent headlights.

Could somebody kindly point me in the direction of best place to obtain bulbs/ballast etc and work involved.

A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all.

You'll need new complete headlights, wiring loom which will have extra wires that go into the central electrics module under the steering wheel cover.

Seeing as you have halogens you may also need to upgrade the central electrics module which will also trigger component protection and on top it will also need to be coded in too.

In my view its straight forward, however you may think all that effort just to do xenons.

The other way could be to split open your current headlights and put projectors in and go the HID ballast route however this way you wont have the DRL signature look.

Ah, nice and simple then ! As said previously, manual shows how to supposedly move headlights forward (by removing appropriate screws) enough to get hands in to change the bulbs. I could not manage this, and could see no way to get headlight unit out completely without removing the front bumper - is this actually necessary or am I being a little obtuse. If somebody could give me a pointer as to how to remove whole unit without bumper removal I would be most grateful.

Hello, the headlights do come out with the removal of the 3 torx bolts that hold it in place, undo the connector as well.

Best case is to try and maybe put a microfibre cloth under the light as you try and bring it out, its just about angling it the correct way, 100% comes out without the front bunper removal, just have to be careful not to scrape the paintwork on the bunper off the headlight when your moving it out.

Once you do it and find the correct angle then its easy.

I know your pain with the halogen headlights, I ended up getting the philips extra 130% bright headlight lamps for it, makes it white light and slightly better than halogen still no where near the xenon standard though, hope this helps.

Thanks - managed to remove headlights and swap bulbs out (took a little while to work out how to remove bulbs - easy when you know how !)

How the hell Audi believe (as per owners handbook) that you can replace bulbs merely by undoing the torx bolts and pulling the headlights unit forward by 45cm is beyond me - Vorsprung durch Technik indeed.
