Hello,

First time poster here. I've been looking to order 2011 S5, and I'm in talks with a couple of dealers in the Washington DC area. One of them will honor truecar's price of invoice +$975 on a 2011 premium plus with nav, b&o, titanium package.

However, he tells me he needs $750 to order the car to "cover shipping costs." The car will arrive in 100 days.

My question is that this $750 is just some sort of dealer markup right? I've never heard of a dealership charging to order the car. I get it if he's transferring from another dealership that there may be a fee, but a new order?

Also, any tips on how you can get them to throw in Audi Care?

Thanks for your help.

I had a unique situation where as the deposit for the vehicle on order was just dropped and I came in to fill his place. I think I actually paid much more. I'm not exactly sure on the amount but it was to secure the vehicle as myself first on the list and to cover shipping. Obviously my deposit went towards the financing of the S5.

Not sure what shipping cost he is talking about. I paid $1,100 over invoice for my 2011 S5 which I felt like was an OK deal. They did however make me put a $2500 deposit down to order the car ($2500 because of the Audi Exclusive Paint). At purchase I was able to put that $2500 towards my down payment or just get it back.

I don't think this is at all unusual for S5s, I've heard as much as 3K being put up to order, especially if you want something unusual or specia. Back when I ordered a 2002 M3 Silver with Cinnamon, I had to put up 5K - The going deposit to order an R8 (for a confirmed slot) is 20K - some saying it is NOT refundable - but in reality most would. Just be sure you know what the terms and conditions of your order contract state - READ it and decide to abide or walk - the dealer will do the same - usually no more or less.

$750 is a good price. My destination charge was $875...

I think this $750 shipping is something on top of the $875, he was unclear so I'm trying to ask him about this. This $750 is not mentioned as any sort of deposit or anything, so just seems like pure profit for the dealers (the way I interpret it right now).

If I am already charged $875 for destination, then I have no idea what the 750 is for. However, for my sake, I would hope you're right SanMiguel and he only charges me $750.

Also, I know S5 is a hot car, but its been out 3 years plus there around about 8 Audi dealers within 1-2 hour of DC, so I figure I could get a good deal - hoping for 500-750 above invoice.

Btw, I am doing a lease and not looking to put anything down.

I have never heard of any "shipping charges" when it comes to ordering the car. When I ordered my vehicle the person I worked with only had me put down $500 dollars and was fully refundable in an event I changed my mind. That $500 dollars went towards my cost of the vehicle. I would try other dealerships. Sounds like they are just trying to sneak in more profit.

Turn out I was able to get him to go down to $750 over invoice (down from $975). He said the $750 shipping was to transfer another vehicle (it wasn't clear in his first email). So right now, I'm looking at 750+100 processing in MD.

The richmond dealer ended up with 500 over invoice, but wanted 499 processing fee.

Both places want full price for audi care.

I actually ended up at another audi dealer close to my house who wanted msrp and 10% deposit...crazy...

I actually ended up getting $500 over invoice +100 processing at a diff dealer in MD - so I'm gonna make that deal.

Not bragging or anything - just providing info that there are good deals to be had during the winter time in case people are looking
