2011 Audi A5 Black Edition

Hi all,

*Complete novice warning - my first ever Audi having came from BMWs*

I have just purchased a new car yesterday, specification as follows:

2011 Audi A5 Black Edition
2.0 TFSI petrol engine
Glacier / Ibis white (need to determine this! There is a metallic flake in sunlight which makes me think glacier?)
19k miles
Full service history
Black Valcona leather upgrade
Start / stop
Xenons & DRLs
19" Rotar alloys
Black edition interior inserts
Etc

A few questions:

1. There is a slight bit of typical wear on the driver's seat bolster - what leather kit is best for this? I'll add more photos of the specific area when I get a chance.

2. 2 of the wheels have a slight bit of kerbing although not enough to justify a full refurb. Is there a technique that can be used to rectify this or can anyone shed any light? Again, I'll add photos when I get time.

3. Is this model prone to the oil consumption issues that I have read about? If so, how is best to check?

To do list:

Dip stick
Lip spoiler - anything recommended?
LED bulbs - Fog, reverse and number plate - anywhere in the UK sell led or white versions?
Update Infotainment system - how do I find my version and install any updates?
Access hidden menu - do I need VAGCOM?

Is there anyone based in Northern Ireland that could tweak a few things in VAGCOM for me? The list is:

Reverse screen and mirror tilt
Alarm beep when opening and closing
Windows drop when unlock held
Anything else worth doing?

Photos are below from the for sale ad. I'll be taking my own soon as mentioned above.

Thanks in advance,

Lee

PS, I am in Northern Ireland should that have any relevance to purchases.

If the curb rash is just in the coating you may be able to sand and polish them. Damage to the metal would be a bit more work.

The Ross-Tech VCDS and cable is really a great value considering features you can enable and the diagnostic capabilities it will give you. I've actually just opted to order my own. Having it around would give you all the time you could want to play with tweaks. If you only want a couple of quick things done you could contact somebody nearby with the cable and software. Welcome,

In answer to some of your questions :

Slight wear and tear on bolster depends on previous owner/s. I'd recomend conditioning the Leather as soon as you can, as I've found that replacing the oil back in to the leather reducers the chances of anything (eg. rivots on jeans) cutting in to it.

Also (according to the pictures) you dont have a MMI system. You have a the infortanment system which is the basic stereo, No Nav, No HDD, No DVD player, No Hidden Menu

Thanks for the response. Yes the rash is just in the coating. Is that a case of wed sanding it to remove the rash?

I'll look into purchasing my own. Does it need a good spec laptop to work? I may only have an iPad and PC.

Cheers,

Lee

Thank you! What leather conditioned would you recommend? I'm concious that I don't want to cause any discolouring to the leather.

Thanks for the MMI correction, it was just what I assumed the general stereo was called!

I've not done such wheel work myself. I'd look around for a guide or ask some other members, but when in doubt start with finer grit first!

The hardware requirements are quite modest:

"With a USB interface: We recommend at least a 1 GHz Pentium-III (or AMD equivalent) with 256 MB of RAM and Windows XP or newer. With Windows Vista, 7, or 8 use a machine robust enough to properly support the operating system."
Welcome Lee

The Rotor alloys are notoriously difficult to repair if you kerb them as the edges are diamond cut. But there are places who'll do it for £70 or £80 per wheel. Hopefully you can fix them yourself, let us know how that goes mate.

Nice car!
Nice nice nice!!!

Leather, I use Lush Leather here lush ? Liquid Elements UK

I had a nick in one of my wheels, I'll get the link to the thread in a minute and come back but I recently also had corrosion under the lacquer on the diamond cut face so my friend sanded it using a very fine grade and got all the corrosion gone but to my surprise the mark has now gone and you can only see where it was by the mark on the tyre!!

Hmm, cant find it, wondering now if I posted about it at all?

Anyway, heres a pic of how it was and heres one how it is now :) Ok not the worst bit of damage but only a sanding got rid!! You can see on the tyre the mark so you can see its the same part of the wheel.

I use Autoglym ;leather cleaner and also Autoglym leather conditioner. I use them both every 3 months or so.

The smell afterwards is great. mmmm I love the smell of dead cow in the morning......

The leather afterwards also looks like new and tends to not look shiny it seems to dull the shine of worn leather.
Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback. The car is now home safe and sound and settling in well.

Shortly after collection (excuse the Instagram filters):

400+ miles later, waiting for the ferry home at Cairnryan:

Parked up when I got home - no chance of tackling the gate posts after 8+ hours driving:

And still there in the morning thankfully:

The car has since had a bath with some Autoglym shampoo and a lambswool mitt, the wheels cleaned with some Autoglym wheel cleaner and the tyres dressed with some Autosmart spray that I had although I dont know the name of - it seems to be almost silicon based.

I am going to spend this weekend reading up on new products for the arsenal.

Thsnk for that, might give a self repair job a go based on those results.

Hi Lee, ebay is probably the cheapest fro Autoglym, unless halfords have 3 for two on car cleaning prodocts which they do regularly.
This is a really random one - should my exhaust tips be chrome or black? at present they are black but I think this may be because they are so dirty!!
They'd be chrome as standard (if they are still the originals) I reckon.

Like the pics of your journey home

The shadow of the person to the right at the ferry port looks like they're about to karate chop you :wink2:
OK ordered some Autosol to give the exhaust tips a good going over to bring them back to chrome. Will add some photos when I have finished.

In terms of the AMI - what cable would you recommend that is long enough to run it all the way up to under the arm rest?
Ordered some additional items too:

LED bulbs for number plate, fogs and interior
New pressed number plates
Replacement dust caps
OEM second keyring
Autosmart Tardis to tackle the model badge removal
Autosol to start the polishing process of the exhaust tips
Autosmart G101 to help with the above

Still loving the car so far!

Averaging 32.7 MPG too which seems good given I do a lot of city centre driving. The start/stop may be helping.

Cheers,

Lee

Nice purchases.

When you tackle the tips, get some 0000 wire wool. This is what I used when I recently got my S5 as it looked like they had never been touched in 2 years but with that stuff and a combo of Autosol and Britemax Easy and Final they come up sweet.

Now Im going to rough them up and paint black lol :)

Thanks Jamin!

Is a standard brilo pad ok? It contains some fairly strong detergent which I hope will help loosen the worst of the carbon build up?

Going a bit mad now and just purchased some Gliptone cleaner and conditioner to tackle the leather this weekend!
I think a brillo pad would add scratches so I wouldn't.

Dirt cheap, get some lol. I got 4m I think.
