EDIT: Current status of this issue: CLOSED - Broken/corroded wire within harness. See below.
PS: I hope this helps serve as sort of a diagnostic procedure as well as reveal a potential issue with this platform. I lack the appropriate wiring diagrams, so my experience is just to reach out to the fundamentals of diagnostics. I hope this helps give you the confidence in improving your wrenching skills, as well.
Various searches regarding this issue leads me to previous gen vehicles.

Hey everyone,

Long time since posting on this forum. I've been treating myself to some wrenching on a new-to-me 1994 Land Rover Range Rover Classic LWB.
Unfortunately, in my time working on the RRC, I've been keeping the S5 in the garage. I don't think this beast appreciated it and I've encountered an issue.

Background:
This is a 2009 S5. Manual transmission with 146,354 miles on the odometer. I can update this section if it benefits anyone else.

The problem:
EDIT: I don't believe these problems are related but will leave this section in quotations.
I think this is where the problem started. A few weeks back I took the car out for a drive. Traveled maybe 20 miles and all of a sudden I busted a coolant line - dumped gallons of fluid in a matter of seconds. I immediately shut the car off and towed it home.
Got home and found the leak. One of my lines was secured via a zip tie instead of a hose clamp

I figured, no big deal, I'll put a clamp on, fill up the coolant system, and be off to the races.
Ever since then, whenever I start my car, the fan turns on full blast. I turn off the car, the fan (circuit 1) will not turn off. This drains my battery.
I am unsure if these events are related. I've squeezed the coolant hoses in an attempt to "bleed" the system but I think I've read somewhere that these cooling systems will self-bleed. And I've had success with my methods in the past when draining and re-filling my cooling system as part of my maintenance schedule.

So i started taking things apart:

Visually checking for wire damage - couldn't see any culprit.

I read on some previous gen cars that the ECU could get water in it. So I pulled the cover. No pic - but it was bone dry.

I'm heading out to the garage to run a VCDS scan. I'll post results soon, but wanted to see if anyone has some feedback/advice that might point me in the right direction.

Ran a scan. Here's what I got:

TL;DR - Here are the two relevant codes I've gotten. The remaining codes are due to certain things being unplugged.
Scanning the car earlier only pointed to Circuit 1. I even ran a test in the engine module through VCDS and circuit 2 would audibly adjust the fan speed. Circuit 1 did not respond to the test (as it was already on full blast).

These two connectors run to the fan. The one circled in red is the one that shuts off the constantly running fan when unplugged.

Something just didn't sit right with me when I did a visual check of the wires - everything is just hidden under conduit. So I traced this plug (yellow) up behind the air intake box (removed from the car for this image):

Continued to follow it across the top of the firewall past the two high-current feeds and to the connector circled in yellow:

Pulled the plug and checked for wire colors. Here's the bulkhead side connector:

Matched up to the fan side connector:

Now I don't have images because I only have 2 hands but I probed the two connectors for continuity. The red/green wire showed continuity. The red/white wire did not!

Next step is to remove this portion of the harness from the car. I have a suspicion that these wires are a little old and frail by now. Will keep everyone posted.

So I started to remove the harness; however, I ran into an issue where the harness included additional wires. I was cutting conduit off and tracing wires to the point where they could be pulled outside of the car and inspected more carefully. If you're attempting this yourself, just work slow and follow the wires over the fender and under the front crossmember. There's a ground under there that can be removed to help free a lot of the harness up:

Before I got too far into removing the harness, I decided to take the red/white pin out of the fan side connector - you can see there was some green corrosion in some of the earlier pics. When removing, the wire simply split:

At this point, I stripped back some of the insulation off the main wire and checked continuity at the bulkhead connector. Success!
At this point I'll simply solder the connection back together and test.

If I had to go any further with removing the red/white wire, I would have soldered a new wire onto the broken end and tried to pull the wire through the harness using the red/white wire as a snake to navigate through some of the still-closed sections of the harness.

Re-soldered the pin and re-installed. Issue confirmed. My fans are no longer running non-stop!
I guess last confirmation will be to run the output test through VCDS to ensure the fans will turn on; but that will be for another time. I'm confident I have found the solution.
After that I just have to put the car back together.
