I find myself with another issue with the S5 now (the last 12 months have been riddled with issues but I'm reluctant to change the car).

Long story short, the battery has been a bit low for the last 12 months but not too low that it hasn't started or given any real cause for concern... until this morning.
Went to start the car and it tried to turn over but not enough juice, then flat as a pancake. Tried to jump start it but that did nothing. Charged the battery but again, no dice. Finally decided to replace the battery, still nothing.

Battery is at 100% charge (according to MMI and voltage tests). Everything works in the car with the exception of the starter. All lights work, windows, stereo, etc. but foot on the clutch, press the key in and nothing, just a couple of quiet clicks from the drivers side fuse box location.

Run a scan with VCDS, had quite a few malfunctions (some from recently retrofitting car play and having the MMI unplugged, one from having the charisma enabled without buttons and one from having some actuator flaps passing beyond the upper/lower limit that has been there for years).

Malfunctions from 6th March were when the carplay was retrofitted and the car has been running fine since then until this morning. 2008 date is what the car reverts back to when the battery is disconnected.

Cleared those, run another scan and only had the following in Address 05: Acc/Start Auth. (J393)

Any ideas what's wrong?
Could it be the retrofit car play that was fitted? (passthrough loom fitted above the glove box, scotchlock to the cable that connects to the head unit, however all has been fine for the last 2 weeks.

Does it turn over when the battery is fully charged? Is it manual can you Bump start with a tow or push?

No, nothing happens when battery fully charged (brand new one fitted yesterday, reporting 100% on mmi).

Could possibly bunp start it but it's not going to be easy based on how it's parked. That'll get me to a vag specialist though, which I think I'll need to accept.

Sounds the same as mine S5 2008 turned out to be the starter motor, hope its not the same. Not a cheap fix.

Yeah I was thinking possibly starter motor. It's got to be something between the ignition (advanced key) and the starter, The quiet clicking from the fusebox and the fact the ignition turns on makes me think it's not that.
No further malfunctions on the relay since clearing the faults (have been trying to start her a number of times over the last day or so in the hopes she springs back to life - a pipe dream I fear). In fact, no new malfunctions other than what I originally posted.

A little concerned about the 01206 - Signal for Duration of Ignition Off Time 008 - Implausible Signal however did find some old scans from 2017 when I changed the battery and this was on the old scan too but never posed a problem and cleared itself (or wasn't flagged up by Audi during health checks and servicing).

Not sure if the starter would throw a malfunction or not (I don't know enough about vagcom to know this)...

We will see what happens when it goes in to the indy next Monday... They can also check out a few other issues that Audi flagged up (that I don't believe if I'm honest) and change that third brake light since I can't get the damn thing out.

I have read that it's engine out to change the starter (stupid design!) or bumper off, wheel off, get in from below with some effort. I just hope it doesn't run up too high a bill. Hoping for nearer the £1k mark than the £5k mark but no idea. Did read an indy has done this for someone else for £900 a few years ago, to Audi's price of £2,600. Out of interest, do you remember how much yours was? Same year car so hopefully wont be far off.

Still not had any luck with this. Unable to bump start it due to where it is etc. and I'm not going to attempt to push it to bump start it on the narrow road where it's parked...

Booked in to a local VAG specialist for Monday, will see what they say.

That said, I do plan to throw VCDS on it again over the weekend, clear faults one by one and see what's being flagged up. Surprised that there isn't an error code that says anything about starter not cracking, relays, ignition etc. however do not know enough about VCDS to know if there are actually error codes for everything on the car.

Seems to be very unlucky to have the starter pack up, or anything else actually, at the same time as the battery totally failed and in my mind it's something that the ECU is holding off still, without any error codes being thrown. I know the power management can be a pain at times (had it before with a low battery and found my MMI stopped working) but really can't see how draining the battery when trying to start (tried to crank but not enough power) on Monday could cause it to do everything but crank after replacing the battery and recoding the battery (will be checking the coding out too in case I messed this up in my haste on Monday)

Will update once I have figured this out.

Checked battery coding, all good.

Cleared all fault codes one by one, reset the time/date in the car, turned off the car and returned after a few minutes to try starting again.

Charisma fault code is expected since I have no buttons for it, this was enabled well over a year ago, if not longer.
Third brake light code thrown is expected since it's faulty (and I can't get the damn thing out!)

HVAC code is a concern, no idea what it's all about. Possibly something to do with the retrofit car play fitted a few weeks ago? Ignition switch? Who knows?

Engine readiness showing some not ready (just found out about this since coming back in from the car), presumably this is due to the fact the battery was dead and changed so ECU reset but shouldn't stop the car turning over?

Only thing I haven't checked are fuses/relays and the starter (due to being in a stupid location!).

Was really hoping she would miraculously jump back to life after a little tinkering but alas, I guess I'm destined to not drive her for a while longer.

As mentioned, it is booked in to an indy VAG specialist on Monday. Left them some notes about the charisma, car play and what I've done since I wont be here when they recover it so wont get chance to tell them these things. Will see what comes back and will post what they tell me.

Finally an update on this...
Took a couple of weeks to get it recovered from my drive then the main guy at the indy went on holiday however they have done some diagnostics and it is the starter gone.
Fortunately they have managed to get to it without removing the engine (guessing from underneath as the various youtube videos show).
Still waiting to get her back and get the bill but at least I now know what's going on.

I had hoped it was the pyro fuse on the battery gone bad from attempting to jump it or from a rear ender I had a few years ago but alas, that wasn't the case. Wish I had known about that fuse before though as it could have been a simple £25 fix rather than paying £95+VAT per hour.

Now I can't wait to get her back though, driving around in falling apart work vans sucks (but I guess it's better than walking)

Finally got the car back today.
All in, £1,900 plus change.

They managed it without removing the engine and in addition to the starter they also replaced the water pump that was looking ropey and the third brake light that had been dead for a year. Plus checked a bunch of stuff Audi told me needed doing (that didn't).

10 hours labour at 95 + vat per hour.
Plus parts (300ish for starter, same for pump, plus sundries etc.)

Pretty happy with that to be honest. More happy that I have it back though 🙂
