2.0 TDI CR 170 remap frustration

Morning all, I’m currently trying find a remap for the 2.0 TDI CR 170 engine, however it is becoming ever more frustrating to find a suitable tuner. I really can not believe how much of a problem it is with this particular engine due to Audi’s ECU security. I’m either being told by companies that they are unable to carry out the work or those that can are charging through the nose for it.

With very little information on the web for the A4/A5 I’m apprehensive to proceed (there seems to be plenty of happy customers of Leon’s and Octavia VRS’ with this engine, however I am not sure just how similar/problematic the ECU security is in these cars?).

It would appear that my choices of reputable tuners are narrowed down to Revo and Superchips which are costing £400 and £465 respectively and will require physically removing and opening the ECU of the car which concerns me slightly.

I appreciate that this question has been asked many times before but I am hoping that there are maybe some owners who have since had this work done without commenting and can tell me if they have had this engine successfully remapped and who by? Ultimately I would like some comfort of knowing it can be successfully done before I go ahead and not have my car used as a guinea pig.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

I spoke to a Revo tuner last week and they had told me that the earlier cars could be mapped without removing the ECU, however around about the time that the 2010 model came out something changed and the mapping could no longer be done this way. This seems to affect cars from '59 plate onwards.

With regards to it the map being invisible to Audi I am led to believe that they are able to find it if they look for it. On this basis I would be fairly cautious if you wish to keep your warranty in tact.

Im not sure why you are concerned about having the ECU unit removed, its not as if they replace it afaik, the software is just replaced, as it would be through the OBD. however i would be concered about shipping my ECU away.

Im booking mine in with The Leading Remap ECU & Engine Tuning Experts covering the North West and Cheshire - Remaps UK in the near future. They offer to do the whole thing in 3 hours including testing it on a rolling road and taking the ECU out and they will create a custom map based on your requirements rather than a generic, one fits all engines remap.

worth a thought. Unfortunately it does cost 500 pounds, but hav been told they warrant damaged caused by their remap, although i cant speak for how easy it will be to prove that the remap cause a damage in the engine?
My concerns regarding the removal of my ECU stem from the fact that it can be damaged on removal. It is held in with tamper proof bolts then has to be carefully disconnected. It would appear that very few A5's have been remapped therefore I do not wish to have someone go in who has a "rough" idea of what to do since they have never worked on an A5 before, then announce that they have damaged the ECU in the process leaving me in the shit.

Thanks for the suggestion. It would also appear that both Revo and Superchips offer a warranty with their software, however I am not sure how easy it would be to claim on it if something did happen.

I'm lead to believe the Tuning Protection is 1024bit RSA Encrypted so unless someone has leaked keys it is virtually impossible to remap via OBD without first removing, opening and unlocking the ECU using a 'backdoor' method.

Given the cost of these units I would only entrust this kind of work to a reputable company whom you are confident would support you in case of issue.

I posted some details and video's of the process some time ago, including examples of how not to do it. They should turn up in the search.

Super Chips have a solution and they are releasing them as and when each ECU is ready. REVO have been doing it for a while.

My thoughts exactly. Thanks for the info, I will check out the video's.

Just my experience:

Now at 52k miles, zero issues. Great piece of kit.
Interesting, generally I had never heard anything positive regarding tuning boxes but I may look into this in a little more detail. Thanks.
