1.8TFSI Sport - MPG

Hi Glenn,

My driving style is very similar to yours, motorway driving and 80mph. I picked up my A5 very recently and have just filled the tank with a view to checking the mpg. I'll update you later in the week but from the on-board computer it's looking like 35mpg's while driving conservatively. It may not end up like this so I'll let you know after I fill up.

An update for you...

I did the return run from Slough to Leeds again yesterday (M4 > M25 > M1) outside peak time and got an average of 45.5MPG over the 206 mile journey at an average speed somewhere in the mid 60s. Although I had to slow to 50mph for quite a few stretches of roadworks there were other bits where I could travel a little faster if you know what I mean. There was no stop/start traffic so most of my acceleration was restrained which has a very positive impact on the 1.8T (floor it and you can get single figure instant MPGs )

On the run down on Monday morning I hit a lot of traffic and ended up having to travel a little faster than normal but I still got about 40MPG over the journey.

I can't see it getting much better than this unless I travel everywhere at 60mph and don't accelerate/brake.

45MPG's!! That's increbibly good. How did you manage that? I've been driving very conservatively up and down through the gears (speeds on motorway of about 132kph) and don't look like getting anywhere near the 40 mark never mind 45. Must be just the extra 15/20kph making the distance.

I have had a bit of stop/start/crawl through some road works, this must be having a bigger impact than anticipated too.

I've done 1200 miles so far so just run in.

My run to work is about 10 miles, 50% dual carriageway, 50% town. Not usually much traffic and get about 33 MPG.

As my commute is short I would expect to get a bit more if the car was properly warming up.

My previous car was a BM 320d Touring and that averaged 45mpg. With petrol being cheaper than diesel I have to say that over the first month I've not really noticed a big increase in my fuel expense. Whether the 2.7 is more cost effective for you will depend on the miles you do, the MPG of the 2.7 etc. I think the 1.8T makes most sense for me as I don't do the miles.

Either way, they are both mint - order one, now, go on Who cares about the mpg when a £30k car makes Aston Martin drivers look at you (probably wondering why they paid £60k more) !!!

Based on the evidence here, I'd say you'r making the right choice. The difference in economy versus the difference in price of the fuels means you probably have made the most economical choice. Even if there's nothing in it, you have saved the diffence in purchase price of the car!

Besides, whichever engine you get... she's just gonna look sooooo good!

Just came home from a 400 km trip, and I averaged my 1.8 TFSI at 6,1 l / 100 km.

Can someone translate that into mpg?

i believe that's 38.6 mpg (you can actually type 6.1 liters/km in mpg into google, but then you have to multiply by 100)

The trip was virtually all motorway, I didn't get caught in any stop/start traffic, there were sections at 50mph which is always good for economy and probably most significantly I avoided rapid acceleration.

I filled the car up before the trip, which is just over 200 miles each way, I've done a few short journeys since my return on Tuesday and the range indicator in the DIS still says I've about 60 miles left on the same tank of fuel.

I've just been out and checked the 2nd trip computer which I haven't reset since I got the car and it's saying I've driven for almost 48 hours, averaged 31mph, covered about 1500 miles and have an average fuel consumption of 34mpg.

Given that I do a lot of very short runs which are terrible on fuel economy I'm really pleased with this figure.

Just stuck this in the UK Google site and it says 46mpg.

This will be the difference between the imperial and US gallon (the imperial gallon used in the UK has a greater volume).

Pretty certain this is right because the next Google link has an article about a Hyundai which does 6.1 litres/100km and expresses it as 46mpg.

I've averaged 31mpg's on the last tank. I've been motorway driving at around 80mph for 85% of my journey. I was gentle up through the gears also. I did get caught in a couple of jams which would have had a detremental affect on my figure. I reckon driving at 70mph without jams would mean a greatly improved figure. It was also only the cars 3rd fill so it may improve when it's driven a bit more.

Your better off filling the car and resetting the trip to calculate your averages imho. Based on a gallon=4.54L, that translates to 45.4Mpgs.

Thanks everyone.......I was starting to get a little confused with the UK/US Gallon

Looks like TLU's MPG is not that amazing afterall......others also seem to be getting this on long runs.............or have i got the wrong wend of the stick? It was all down to the conversion right?

Not sure it was all down to conversion. Obviously you shouldn't expect 45mpg on every run ... not even every motorway run. On the same journey that I report above I've had everything down to 38.5mpg ... but I did have some fun on that one

Re the colour. Absolutely, definitely avoid Quartz Grey. Terrible colour. Looks crap in all light conditions. Awful to keep clean. Everyone I know hates it. Young children point and give derisory laughs in the street. (Can't have too many quartz A5's now, can we?)

Out of curiosity I was really trying hard to get as many miles per galon as I possibly could (see previous post). On a normal trip I´d probably get high 30s or low 40s - and a lot more fun!

Yeah, can't see myself worrying about mpg's once I get the engine remapped.

I'm a bit lost on all this remapping business ... if a remap can greatly increase both performance and economy why don't Audi ship it this way? Is it something to do with increased wear and tear or is the whole remap thing misrepresented?

AH...it must be nice with the TDI's...diesel is so over priced here in the States that no new cars will be diesel...shame too, because the best we can hope for A5's on gasoline is less than half of the TDI's MPG. (even less for the S5...but Ian can vouch for that!).
