I am test driving a 1.8T A5 on Thursday and im just wondering is there much difference in price of insurance of the 1.8T and the 2.0T ?

Also is there much difference in performance as both are TFSI.

The 1.8T i have found with Audi (used) has everything in it that im looking for Sat nav, Day Time LEDS ... the list goes on. Im just a bit uncertain about performance as i am going from a 260BHP sport hatch.

There isn't too much of a difference in insurance quotes. (i found anyway) I was looking at the 1.8 and the 2.0.

I would recommend the 2.0 160bhp manual car out the 2! :D Its fuel efficient, as you have the start/stop technology and it produces 149 Co2 which means its cheaper to tax. On top of that you get the extra bhp and performance from the engine.
I was originally going to go for the 1.8 to cut cost, but in the long run this wouldn't benefit me. The engine is much dirtier at 164 Co2. Also the transmission makes a difference too. The automatic are on the same tax band at 164/169 Co2.

This ultimately gets taken into consideration when you insure the cars up. I found its cheaper to insure the 2.0 then it was the 1.8. The 211 is a great engine, but there just seems too much torque on them front wheels. So I would recommend the quattro at that stage.

What sport hatch are you coming from? The clue is in the name 'sport hatch'. So cars like the S3 or the TT are in a different egg basket to the A5. The A5 is more of a sports tourer or a cruise liner in comparison. So that makes a huge difference on your insurance. It will be certainly cheaper than your 260bhp sports hatch. Just wondering, are you going to be financing the car or willing to order a new one? As the new 1.8 engine is gonna be mighty fine. At 132 Co2 and 170 bhp. It will also include the servotronic steering as standard. Whereas before on either the 1.8 or 2.0 180 engine you had to pay for it. In my opinion it makes a huge difference. (power steering basically)

Im 25 and it cost me ÂŁ720 for the year. My 1.4 A3 was a similar price.

Welcome to the forums by the way :D

Thanks for the reply mate.

Firstly ive finally decided to jump on the Audi band wagon, im coming from a Astra VXR (260BHP) Fast car but quality wise, very poor. Ive always wanted to move onto audi and now i am.

Im not too fussed on the speed as such i just dont want the Car to really disappoint me in performance.

Ill be getting the A5 from Audi themselves but Used (so that i get 12 months waranty)

Ive found one with everything in that i need and want, as i said though its a 1.8T FSI and im a bit unsure if ill regret getting it with that engine.

Also i think if i went for the 211 Quattro that wud be too much on insurance, im 22. (Yes my insurance was also stupid on the VXR and that's my reason for down grading engine size but up scaling in class of the car)

I swapped from a Golf R32 to an Audi A5 1.8T and pulling out of junctions can sometimes be interesting, but the overall driving experience make up for the difference in BHP, I find the audi makes you drive in a different style to the hot hatch, much more relaxed and it is soooo nice not having pretend hot hatches hanging off your bumper all the time.
My insurance is ÂŁ460 but then i am the wrong side of 30!!!

Yer i think i will have to get used to not thinking i can pull out on anyone and get away with it with the BHP under my bonnet haha.

I want to get away from that now tho tbh, i want a more comfortable ride. And something built alot better and doesnt rattle and break every 5 minutes!!

the 1.8 is a good engine. I just found the 2.0 a tad better due to better fuel consumption and cheaper long term running cost. If that doesn't bother you, then the 1.8 is still fine. Given the fact your coming from a car like that astra you owned then the 1.8 shouldn't be a worry. Either way, at 22 the A5 is a great car to own. Just a tad heads up, expect to be pulled by the police a lot. If Im driving around at 12-1am (coming home from work) and theres a police car behind me, they pull me over.
Their reason is "young driver in an A5. Checking to see if the car belongs to me as a lot of these cars go walkies of peoples drives" Lets face it, in the UK not many drivers under 25 own these things, not even an audi to be honest. So taxed, insured (which it will be gathering from the thread title and a healthy licence, you'll be on your way in no time. Think of it as a personal tracker
In regards to performance, these cars are great at motorway speeds. However as mentioned, pulling out from a junction or needing to add a bit more throttle can be interesting. So you may miss that in the A5. Thats one thing I miss from my A3. Having said that, my engine is new and still feels a bit tight. So may be next year it will be like a sports car?

The insurance also goes down to where you live too. If you live out in the sticks where there are very few claims and doesn't cover a crime hot spot then your insurance will be nice and cheap. If you live in the rough end of a city, even worst where a lot of accidents happen then expect your insurance to rocket.

much more relaxed and it is soooo nice not having pretend hot hatches hanging off your bumper all the time.
I agree with that too. I dunno why, I don't drive aggressively at all, nor up peoples A***. I drive this a lot more sensibly and stick to the speed limits. Other drivers tend to get out your way. Oh wait, its the police car behind me again! :D

Thanks again for the info mate, Yer i even get pulled in the Astra VXR as ive had it from brand new (ÂŁ22k plus) so they always question where i got the money from.

.... why i spent that much on a Vauxhall ill never no!! Live and learn anyways.

Ill be test driving the 1.8T on Thursday ... if i like it and its in good condition (im guessing it will be as its audi approved and only done 22k miles) ill be taking it home with me!

Same here on my A3 I last had. It was fully spec'ed and they would ask "why I would spend so much money on a car?" etc, etc

I love driving, its my hobby. Some people love motorbikes, others like scuba diving or flying planes. I love driving to lots of places and generally looking after it. Also ask to test drive the 2.0 180 bhp to get an idea too. Which dealer will you be visiting?

I had an A4 1.8 T Sport until last weekend. 150 bhp, pretty quick, did 32mpg.

Swapped it for an A5 S-back 2.0 TFSI S-line. 211 bhp, much quicker, seems to do 42 mpg.

Insurance difference was ÂŁ4. (Admin fee was ÂŁ25).

My renewal quote for the A5 is ÂŁ380. I too am the wrong side of 30 and I've had Audi's since I was 29.

Cheers
Matt.

No.
The 1.8 is 160 and the 2.0 has 2 versions.
And the 2.0 is 180 and 211 and 211 quattro.

I have taken insurance quotes when I was 21. Noticed a difference when I got to 25. What are you getting at the moment in regards to insurance quotes? To be honest your best of shopping around as thats the best place your going to find your way. A few things worth considering;
-area you live
-how long you've held you licence
-how many miles you do a year
-any previous driving conviction or accidents (depending if its 5 or 3 yrs. All insurers are different)
-value and type of the car
-where the car is parked overnight

-value and type of the car, as mentioned will be different to your astra as its not a hot hatch or sports car. I have owned audis since I was 19. Different specs. The A5 is the best quoted, in the range. For me that is. So it really is down to personal circumstances. As you'll find most the members on this forum are 25+
There are VERY FEW under 25s from the UK on here, most of them from the states. Also, if your parents have good driving records, with licenses held for a reasonable amount of time then it may be worth putting them on your insurance policy. It will help to bring the cost down.

I've been insured with;
-LV
-Admiral (few years)
-first alternative

All been good.

Just got my renewal through from 'More Than', which had effectively doubled from last year to ÂŁ761:yikes:.

Ok it's not a 1.8 or 2.0, but thought I'd throw it out there about insurance anyway.

Anyway, called More Than to ask why it had gone up so much and they offered to drop it by ÂŁ90, there and then. Asked them why that reduction wasn't offered as part of the standard renewal as it looked like pure profiteering on the hope I would just auto renew. Worse was they couldn't provide any logical reason for the massive hike and then instant drop when I called, other that insurance was more expensive when my renewal policy was sent a few days earlier - yeh right. :wall:

Decided to go with Hastings Direct and it dropped back down to ÂŁ358.

Moral is it's always worth shopping around as Insurance companies are always changing their vehicle/model risk ratings.

Cheers
