S5 Buying

Hi All,

My search for an S5 is on!!

Bike up for sale - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...odel=R6&page=2
Car up for sale - https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...odel=A5&page=1

Just some S5 Qs!

What pack does the Sport diff come with.

What does Drive select come with as standard?

Is there a spec checker using the reg?

Some ads mention Sport diff, some don't, but I know it is an option - just trying to find out as much as I can before I make a 200 miles drive. The seller, especially if a dealer might not know about the full options on it!!??

What's everybody's opinion on the 2 tone leather? I kinda like the black/white, defo not the Red/Black! Girlfriend says just plain black!?

Dave

I like the two tone, it breaks single colour cabins real well.

If you ask for opinions on trim colour you will get 100 different opinions.
I specifically looked for a car that had the red/ black leather as it looks smart and will hide marks easier than the white /black option.
Did not bother with black as I must have had nearly 40 cars with black leather and fancied a change.

If everything seems to be 'under control',your not driving fast enough

Dave, congrats on making the decision to move from the world of the dirty diesel I'm sure you'll not regret it.

As Redline said, the colour option is totally a personal decision, mine's full black which has white stitching on the seats, armrest and steering wheel and I think looks really classy but I like the other colours too, I don't think you can go wrong really.

The black editions are more sought after and usually cost a little extra but worth it in my opinion.

I'd say the full mmi with nav is a must personally as it makes the centre console look much better.

As for the sports diff, I don't have this so I don't know what I'm missing there. I've heard it's very good but the cars ability far outweighs my talent so I don't think I need it anyway.

Good luck with the search. 👍

In the B8 (pre facelift) ADS was only available when one of the three options was also purchased. This changed in the B8.5 where it was possible to purchase ADS on its own without any of the three options.

ADS allows you to choose a driving mode. Each mode will then configure certain features of the car to pre-selected settings. I only have experience of the B8.5 so I'm not sure what differences there might have been for the B8, however this is the list of modes I have: Economy; comfort; auto; dynamic and indvidual (which allows those pre-selected settings to be user-defined, if you have the Sat Nav). What each of these modes changes are: engine sound (soundaktor); gearbox mode (E, D or S); throttle response; steering response (B8.5); and apparently the energy used by the air-con too. If you additionally have the options, it also configures dynamic steering, damper control, sports diff and ACC sensitivity.

Sports diff is rare. Unfortunately some dealers are not entirely sure of what it is and that it was an option, so there is a chance that you'll see an ad for a car with it, and it may not actually have it. Caveat Emptor! The S5 sportback has a visible bulge in the left of the boot at the back for the control module and this is one easy way to know that sports diff is fitted. But I don't believe this is the case for the coupe or convertible. The sports diff is quite noticeable by looking under the rear of the car, as per my photos.

Beware of putting too may "must have" options on your list - you might create a car which you cannot find.

Thanks Dippy! I knew I'd be checking underneath for the 'motor' and cables on the rear diff to check for a sport diff!

I also know about the 'options' list, I've had to up my budget!
@SmokeyJoe - I know and the May 2014 onwards S5 is the same tax band as my diesel, so that must point to similar mpg!? Also looking forward to getting one!!

But my 3.0tdi is running really sweet at the moment, pulling strongly Now all valleted and polished, it looks really nice! Keep thinking, do I really want to sell!?

Had a drive of a mates S5 V8 and apart from the noise, I actually preferred mine! Think the dodgy clutch didn't help, but its the same year and done half the mileage of mine, but felt 'older'. But it hasn't put me off the V6 S5!!

Thanks Morski -

My car isnít anywhere close to clean, so Iíll stick to how I checked what options were fitted when I was buying my B8.5 S5.

Itís clear many owners and garages didnít know what options were fitted. The codes in the handbook also donít always seem to be complete (when using a decoder website.)

For ADS the only way I could check was to get a photo of the ADS individual setup screen.

Checking the interior of the car for pictures of buttons to work out what some had and others didnít. Some cars didnít have hill hold assist (button just behind handbrake).
Some had keyless entry/start, which I wasnít bothered about at the time, but in hindsight glad I donít have, due to security issues and based on forum posts common failure of the door handle sensor.
Black edition has a lot as standard and they are easy to spot visually, so can tell even if the seller doesnít know. The only option I wish I had that I donít is the memory seat function, as it takes me a few days to get it adjusted back if my wife has been driving the car.

Happy hunting.
(Has got me wondering how much Iíd get if I sold my car, quite fancy a TTRS)

Yeah I'd like those options! More to play with!

There does seem to be quite a gap in price between the V8 and V6, I think mainly down to greedy thirsty V8.

Do like the sound of the 5 cyl engine in the TTRS and RS3! They sound like a V10 to me

Tempting to suggest that my 4 year old car is that clean but yes, I took them a few hours after the car arrived at the dealer. It was still jacked up in transit mode so even easier to take those photos.

Being the date from which the EU6 compliant CREC engine was used. Apart from emissions and efficiency (e.g. it has a supercharger clutch) it is worth considering because there were other revisions which should improve reliability. Also the reduction in particulates was done by adding 6 fuel injectors at the manifold so this engine ought to be immune from the carbon problems which affect engines which only have direct injection.

The other date to note is around March 2013. That's when the 3rd version of the s-tronic gearbox went into production cars.

Also, I know if the car is in the UK, you can do a cap hpi check on it, Which will also include a detailed spec check.

See that 1AT. Apparently your car will have hill hold, and TPMS - I learnt that yesterday (if it was 1AS it doesn't)

My engine code says CJCA - what does this mean?

Hahaha Simon did you see the tyres? They have most certainly been on the track so I'm sure it's been thrashed like all other R6's.
Not always a bad thing though as they can take it.
I do agree though don't sell the bike unless you really have to. Hard times getting rid of toys. I've still got a very nice TL1000r that I've owned for over 10 years Im sure it'll be the only one left soon. Lol

Yeah done a few track days on the bike, but I am by no means one of the quickest. When the weather is warm the tyres start getting the melted rubber on the edges, this is the softer compound on the edges of the Dunlop RR tyres. I have ridden it fast, yes, but not abused it! It probably benefits from being ridden on the track every so often, keeps the engine running sweet. Most highly strung engines don't like pottering about.
