Exclamation Safety Recall, 3.0 TFSI 09/13 to 04/18, fuel rails

I was checking my MOT status on the DVSA website yesterday and saw a safety recall for my car issued only yesterday (20 March 19).

Apparently it is worldwide and relates to 3.0TFSI engines between September 2013 and April 2018.

The Audi recall code is 24DP. It is to replace the fuel rails on affected vehicles; about 3 hours work.

Quote:
What is the issue?

On certain vehicles, a small amount of fuel may leak from one or both fuel rails. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a fire.
Quote:
What will we do?

To correct this defect, your authorized Audi dealer will replace the fuel rails. This work will take about three hours to complete and will be performed for you free of charge.
There is an EU Consumer Alert here

In the UK I hadn't had a recall letter from Audi UK so I phoned the main dealer yesterday. They were not aware and had to check their system and said they had only just been notified that day.

I've uploaded an Audi USA technical bulletin that describes the repair procedure (pages 9 - 24).

I'll have a good check for the smell of fuel from my car.

This work requires removing the supercharger. Whilst a competent tech can allow for the variations with a stage 2 mod, I think I shall want to have a discussion with a senior tech before having mine done. This may very well affect which dealer I go to!

I just inspected mine. With the cover off the offside rail is clearly visible, and the nearside one is a bit obscured by pipes. I have no idea exactly how small the leak is, so I can't be sure, but there are no visible signs on mine nor any smell of fuel. I note that there have been similar recalls for other engines so it is possible that the risk is theoretical (i.e. there have been no actual customer cases). I shall not panic over mine, but I'll wait for the notice and see what urgency Audi gives. I'm not going to let a dealer fix mine unless I am confident that they won't have problems due to the tune. I fear the worst case that in doing the fix they cause collateral damage and then refuse responsibility because it is a modified car. I shall discuss this with Mark at MDM Technik when he services the car next month.

@Dippy, what kind of things are you worried about? Other than the belt size being different I can't see how this work would affect the tuning? Am I missing something?

I guess you are missing my level of paranoia concerning the level of competence of certain techs at certain Audi dealers.
