Very nice!

I'm waiting on something very similar coming through the post (TTRS Wheel with red stitching) which I'm planning to fit IAW Cuppa's - modified wiring loom for TT airbag etc...

Is this wheel a simple plug in and play? Or have you had to modify anything in anyway in order to make it fit/work correctly?

Need to change my stop start button, I think it comes with a red detail around the switch now; should add to the red stitching on the steering wheel.

I've been so indecisive over which way to go with this mod! I've trawled the forums to find the solution to fitting a flat bottom wheel. In the end I went with the option as per Cuppa's thread (I have a 2008 S5) so I know this would work.

With the wheel you've purchased (excuse my lack of knowledge) are you fitting a post FL wheel to a pre FL A5/S5?

It's a post FL wheel on MY pre FL car. I always liked the flat bottom wheel on the TT's. Found a couple of threads on the forum last week and that was it, ordered from a link on a thread and 6 days later it's arrived. Very happy, feels far better to hold than the standard s-line wheel. Pictures don't do it justice. Roll on tomorrow afternoon

I really love the flat bottom wheel. Need it but I think the cost and fitting would be too much to justify it for my preference. Specially as I think the 5 will need to be traded in for a 'family' car soon

Now Fitted

Ok, here goes. I have a gravel drive, so I didn't need the sand that some OP's have used under the front wheels here on the forum.

I started off by motoring my seat all the way back as far as it would go. Then I adjusted the position of the steering wheel to the maximum reach and rake:

This will make it easier to access the two T30 Torx fasteners that hold the airbag to the steering wheel:

Size:	708.7 KB
ID:	80050

With the engine running I could move the steering wheel to aid access to the fasteners.
Using a flat bladed screwdriver or your finger nail pop the plastic cover off the torx fasteners, located at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock:

Name:	IMG_2810.jpg
Views:	246
Size:	636.1 KB
ID:	80058

Using a 1/4 inch drive and T30 Bit undo the Torx fasteners: They are floating (captive) in the steering wheel; so when I loosened both, they stayed in and didn't fall out.

I re-center the steering wheel, turned the engine off and with the ignition still on, dis-connected the negative terminal on the battery and everything goes quiet (ignition warning and Radio):

The airbag now separates from the steering wheel but is still connected by the airbag harness:

Name:	IMG_2823.jpg
Views:	290
Size:	484.0 KB

The harness has two connectors, one yellow at the top of the steering wheel and a smaller black one positioned at the bottom of the steering wheel. The bigger yellow connector (on my car 2009) had a red release button that you push towards the front and that released the yellow connector from the steering wheel. The smaller black connector was a push fit and simply pulled apart. Airbag now removed from the steering wheel:

You can see both connectors on the removed airbag (above)

Using a 1/2 inch drive and M12 splined bit (I bought a set for 25 from Halfords) remove the steering wheel securing bolt. The securing bolt wasn't highly torqued and fairly easy to undo. Once removed the steering wheel just slides off the splined shaft:

On this next picture you can see the connector on the steering wheel boss for the yellow connector off the airbag harness and the indicator for lining the steering wheel when refitting/installing:

The next two pictures are just to show the comparison of the original and upgraded steering wheels, I wasn't sure if the new steering wheel would be any thicker than the original but I was peasantly surprised to find it was and feels more akin to an M sport steering wheel:

Right, next was to remove the new airbag. This airbag is held on with metal tangs that clip over attachment points on the steering wheel:

Size:	638.3 KB

Using a flat bladed screwdriver, I just popped the tang over the attachment point on the back of the steering wheel. No real effort required very easy to remove:

Airbag removed:

This picture shows the connectors on the new airbag. The four white plastic supports are sprung loaded to hold the airbag in place when fitted to the steering wheel:

Name:	IMG_2845.jpg
Views:	248
Size:	665.6 KB

New steering wheel installed on the splined shaft, note the clear plastic connector at the 12 o'clock position for the yellow connector on the airbag harness. At the 6 o'clock position is the smaller black connector for the black connector on the airbag harness. Re-install the M12 splined bolt, now ready for the airbag:

Name:	IMG_2849.jpg
Views:	305
Size:	541.5 KB
ID:	80178

Airbag now connected with the connectors and pushed on to the steering wheel, a little force is required to get the tangs to engage on the steering wheel attachment points. You will hear as well as feel them engage to the steering wheel:

Name:	IMG_2854.jpg
Views:	221
Size:	576.7 KB
ID:	80186

I now checked with my iPhone, using the camera for FaceTime to check that the tangs had engaged with the attachment points on the steering wheel and took pictures. As you can see, they are in the correct position:

Name:	IMG_2860.jpg
Views:	167
Size:	217.6 KB
ID:	80210

Now happy that its fitted correctly, I refit the negative terminal on the battery. The ignition on warning buzzer sounds as the drivers door is open and the radio is on, the only thing I have to do is reset the time and date in the computer. I sound the horn and flick through the buttons on the steering wheel and apart from the NAVi button, everything works:

Fully understand but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than changing the car, really difficult to find something better than I already have, without paying thousands and having just moved house, this was a bit of a trade off Decorate the house:update the car 2:1 ratio. I am ok with that

Fantastic write up Okocha, thanks for taking the time to do it!

While the cost of the updated wheel is the main reason i haven't done this mod yet, I also thought the swap with the airbag was tricky to do. Your write up makes it seem relatively straight forward...

If I happen across some money, I might have to add this to the list!

Current: Carless....

Looks good

I've installed mine today...

It's gone on with no faults on the airbag side of things...

However the multi-function buttons and the horn are not working

I've adapted the harness as per cuppa's thread, but I think the harness I used was incorrect.

I used (what I believe to be) an A4/6? wiring harness which is almost identical to an A5 one. On further inspection, one of the wires is missing on the A6 harness. So I've order another an A5 harness instead (as I dont want to use my original one) and will refit the wheel as soon as it arrives

If this doesn't work I'll be in the poo and looking to go down the route you have!

I'll put some pictures up as soon as it's sorted.

Eskimo, like I said last night, it took longer to write it up and fix the picture issue than complete the swap. Glad to help when I can

That's a shame Damian, I haven't read cuppa's thread so I suppose its the steering wheel you have????

Looks fantastic.

Ill have a shuffle of finances and see if I can get one sorted I dont think I'd have the confidence to do it myself - I'd probably get the old one off and not be able to fit the new one or the old one back on and be up shit creak haha.

I wonder how much it is to get a local shop to fit it for me? Ill have to make some calls tomorrow

Post up a pic of your wheel.
It may need the harness to be repined which i can do for you if you came down to dartford or have me travel to you?

Cheers
