Hello Everyone :)

Regarding S-Tronic Transmission, Whats the max amount of Torque 7 speed Stronic Transmission Can handle?

Thanks

As posted before on this forum, the new S-tronic-7 kan handle upto 550 Nm of torque (the "old" S-tronic-6 could do max 350 Nm(.

doesn't the old s5 with the old tiptronic produce 440nm? i think its the multi-tronic found in the smaller engines that only handles around 350nm? correct me if im wrong here.

on that note, is the tiptronic found in the old S5 the exact same unit as the one in the 3.2fsi or the 3.0tdi?

I think someone is confusing TipTronic with S Tronic with Multitronic. The TipTronic is a "normal" torque-converter automatic, the Multitronic is a Constant Velocity Ratio Gearbox, the S Tronic is a Double Clutch Gearbox.

The topic here is clearly S Tronic - to be noted is the fact that the Torque Converter gearboxes can generally handle a higher level of torque, the CVR Gearboxes are determined by the belts used to transmit power.

The "old" 6 speed S Tronic uses two dry clutches whereas the new 7 speed S Tronic has both clutches running in an oil bath, hence the modern version can handle more Torque.

correct me, if I'm wrong,
but the original 6-speed, transversal-mouted S-tronic, uses a wet double-clutch, with only one oil-reservoir for both cluthes and gears.
the new high-torque, 7-speed, longitudal-mounted S-tronic, also has a wet double-clutch, with seperate oil-reservoirs for clutches and gears.
the new lower-torque, 7-speed, transversal-mounted S-tronic, uses a dry double clutch, with only an oil-reservoir for the gears.

Fred,

How can you tell if gear box is new-high torque or new-low torque? As long 3.0TDI is concerned, it has 7 Speed S tronic with 500nm.. that would certainly mean high torque.

I have read that it can handle upto 550nm.. where as also read some where else that it can handle upto 700nm but cant find ref to it as cant recall the link.

the new high-torque S-tronic is used in cars with the engine north-south :)
for example A4 and A5
the new lower-torque S-tronic is used in cars with the engine south-west, like A3 and TT

as for the torques, internet is yr friend :)
one example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox

but there is more, I'm sure :)

Audi longitudinal DSG ( WIKI)

It has a torque handling limit of up to 600 N·m (440 lb·ft),[7] and engine power outputs of up to 330 kW (450 PS; 440 bhp).

YET many other pages say 550nm.

Any one?

550 or 600 Nm, does it matter that much ??
the engine is well below either figure :)
3.0 TDI is the stronger one, with 500 Nm

on internet you do indeed find different values.
the only correct source would be Audi.
but they don't mention it.

if you look at ABT-tuning, they don't do 3.0 TDI with s-tronic.
the "mild" version would go to 560 Nm.

Fred,

MTM is doing 3.0TDi upto 310hp and 600nm, Certainly i am not sure if they do S Tronics as well, I have emailed the local MTM agent here in england, awaiting their reply now.

Josty

Not sure about Tiptronic.. have to do some homework on that as well, but again they best source to confirm the right figs for each gearbox will be

1) Audi itself,
2) MTM
3) ABT

As long Turbocharger is concerned, i dont think it would make a very big diff to a power would it? dont have much of knowledge about Superchargers etc.
Again there is no harm looking into it!

Mage0608,

On Diesel Engines we have 7 Speed S Tronic Gearbox, Any idea about max torque handling?

Updates on Torque handling,

Just spoke to MTM, they have confirmed that stronic gearbox can handle torque of 600nm +!
