Auto dimming mirror retrofit

Hi guys,

My Audi does not have auto lights and rain sensor, from what I have seen online an auto dimming mirror does not work unless I have the auto lights and rain sensor.

I have replaced the one I had and fitted an auto dimming mirror, just plug and play. The connector has 3 pins however on the new mirror it has 6.
The green light comes on, but I am not sure if it actually works as I have just fitted it today.

Does anyone know if a straight swap works or is there something else to be done?

Many thanks

When the green light is on shine a torch into the mirror sensor (simulating headlights in the mirror) the mirror glass should go dark.

Auto lights requires a new headlamp switch with the auto position, some wiring and some VCDS coding. I don’t recall if it uses the light sensor on the front of the mirror or another sensor.

The basic dimming mirror just needs power as all the sensors are built into it, one facing forward and one back. When it's brighter behind the car than in front, it dims. One of the extra wires is a dimming signal that can go to the side mirrors which could optionally have dimming glass too, and one of them is connected to the reversing lights so that the dimming is disabled when you select reverse.

Thank you so much for your help!
As long as it works I am happy!

I have another question if you don't mind, regarding the auto lights and rain sensor. I have seen the kufatec wiring loom from the above post and I already have the rain light sensor sitting in a drawer somewhere in the house.

Now I don't really know if my windscreen is already equipped with the support for the light rain sensor, even though it looks the same as a windscreen with it.

Would you be able to tell me whether i can install it without replacing the windscreen?

Thank you ever so much!

It looks like you have a blanking plate in the centre of the black teardrop shape. This is where the rain sensor fits.

I see, so technically I should be able to glue the sensor in, get the wiring in place, a new switch, VCDS and should work. Without the need to replace the windscreen

You may need to calibrate the sensor. I've never done this myself, but I did read it on here somewhere.
