posted this morning in the other vibration thread no response yet, so just reposting here:
ummm, have we figured out what this problem is yet? i am putting in a vote for something to do with the tires for this reason: i did not have a vibration issue for the first 2.5 months of owning my car. then i ran over something and got two flats, so i just had them changed (at the dealer), ever since, when traveling between 60 and 80 mph, the steering wheel goes BERSERK. serious vibrations, to where if i am holding it and i speak, my voice will rattle. it only happens at these speeds, i tried isolating it to get more info, but all i know is it happens on perfectly smooth roads at highway speeds. very ridiculous. any ideas what to do? get the dealer to rebalance the wheels??? |

I was having this issue when I first got my DPE wheels. After I added coilovers and got it lowered and aligned, the problem is 98% gone.
I would ask for an alignment even though the symptoms sound more like a balancing issue...

Well, I had my test drive Tuesday morning, and yea I made the dealer accompanying me turn off the radio. as I was going around 35-50mph, I felt the skipping vibration on the right side. I tried to look at the road to see if it is the road patch lines, but I didnt see any. After 10 minutes, I made another way to the same road, and did not feel it. So I concluded it was the car rather than the road. Wonder what it is.

for me, it is not a vibration of the whole car (at least it doesnt seem to be). it is literally the steering wheel vibrating like crazy. its so bad that i have contemplated taking a video of it to show you guys.

vibration of steering wheel sounds like either the axel or the alignment?.. Have you gotten it looked?

Zero vibration on my A5. It has the standard 18 inch 245/40 Pirelli's. Car is as smooth as silk on a smooth road and no abnormal vibration induced by poor quality roads. I generally drive between 65 and 75 mph but have no vibs all the way to 95 mph. Haven't been any faster.

I am new to this forum and glad to see this thread.
I own a 2008 A5 S-Line (5k miles so far) and have been experiencing the same vibration problem other people are mentioning. I felt more regularly in cold weather but do get it in warmer temps. It starts noticeably and then dissipates after 15 minutes of driving but can come back after warmup. It can be a noticeable side-to-side shake of the steering wheel OR a more subtle sensation in the seats. I have had many passengers confirm that I'n not crazy they feel it too. I feel it at 40-45mph while starting my drive from home AND 60-70 on highway. On highway sometimes it will be there sometime not...on same stretch of road btw...it is not a road surface condition. Unfortunately the Dearer (HBL Tysons) says they don't feel the vibration. I even left the car with them overnight to allow the car to sit before driving. There response is that this is a normal condition for our combo of suspension and tires. I have had them look at it 3 times and they have balanced the tires and did a "check" and have reported all things look normal. Tires? Suspension? who knows...I am not a car tech expert. I don't think it is rpm related since I will downshift to change rpm in the middle if the vibration and it does not change the shaking. If it was a Mac I could troubleshoot it ![]() Just wanted to document my findings. |

they're telling me i have a slightly bent rim; the technician said he rotated it to the back and that alleviated the problem a lot, but it was still slightly vibrating so they sent it out to be fixed, and we'll see how it goes. im skeptical, but if the vibration is gone when i get it back this afternoon ill be happy.
the issue did not start for me until i ran over some weird piping that was just sitting in the middle of the highway (was following a van and didnt see it til it was too late to avoid), so it's possible that incident bent my rim. not sure. will report back after the jump. |

so they sent the rim out to be straightened, put it back on, rebalanced everything and the vibration is 100% gone. i gotta tell you, it surprises me that i had a bent rim, but i guess with this car it is VERY sensitive to this, so perhaps that's where others' vibrations are coming from? i'd recommend you check this out...

For those of you that are still having the issue with the vibration. Are you running the stock wheels or aftermarket?
This may or may not be something, but several years back the 350Z had the same problem. I remember reading about it and it turned out to be the rotors.

I have noticed the vibration in the steering wheel around 60-65mph as well. I got it detailed by a friend of my brother's shortly after getting it in May and they both noticed the right rear wheel had a gash in the rim along with a very small chunk out of the tire as well. Neither my dad nor my brother ever hit a curb with it before I got it so my dad thinks it was someone who test drove it since it was the demo at the dealership. I took it in to see if they could do anything about it, but unfortunately no luck! The funny thing is that I never noticed a vibration in the steering wheel whatsoever until after the guys from the dealership took it for a drive. My dad also recently noticed a vibration in the passenger seat.
I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon so we'll see if they come up with anything! Most likely an alignment problem but I'm curious to see what they say since I was driving it for a month or so before noticing the vibration at all even though the rim had the gash in it the entire time. ![]() |

I have vibration too, between 100 - 120 km/h
my story is: with original wheels/tyres 245/45R17 Michelin - no vibration, little noise with OZ Ultraleggera 8xJ18 and Dunlop Sport Maxx 235/40R18 and H&R spacers - vibration, big noise, after rebalancing little bit better with Eibach spacers - less vibration maybe no one (maybe I look at it too much), still noisy - probably Dunlop issue. |

I just got mine rebalanced yesterday and it seemed better on the drive home. Apparently there was a guy from Audi at the dealership who looked at the car and said that Audi was aware of this problem. One of the service men told me that Audi was going to do some 'restyling', whatever that means, to fix the problem. Probably on the 09 models.

The only vibration issue I had was when I was backing up, turning the steering wheel in one direction. Once I backed up, I turned the steering wheel the other direction and I get a vibration from the front wheels, driver side most likely....
I have driven from 60-110mph and have not run into that vibration issue

I have repeatedly experienced this vibration just over 60mph. Hope whatever Audi figures out is backwards compatible and just not an 09 fix.

Can you elaborate on "work on suspension".....
