Default Stolen after 3 months

Was burgled last night while we were in the house and they stole my A5 and keys and wallet...none in view to outside.

Police reckon the car was stolen to order so let you know if and when they find it fortunately its a company car....I waited 4 months for the last one.

Bad times

Bad news, at least you are OK. It is happening everywhere these days, even up here in Warwickshire - a pretty low crime area.

Our cars are always in a secure garage (electric roller shutter door), out of sight is the way to go. Do you have a garage to keep it in?

Residents parking...........no garage as such........I never had a problem before but then again never had an A5 so the police say because of the wait these are being stolen to order.

Just be aware guys! Awwww well hopefully get a quattro and heated seats this time!

Sorry to hear that. At least A5s are popular. At least they didn't take the more direct violent route. Hope you get your new one soon.... you might end up buying it back in your search for a new one

Lucky you left the keys about, the thought of some 'scumbag' threatening you in bed at nights frightening.

Think I'll start putting keys under wifes pillow from now on.!

Got any photos or info on the car?

Might be worth posting it up. There's potential buyers on the board, and it's something they can look out for. In particular, the chassis number if you have it.

Tracker fitted?

Maybe next time, although I've heard it's not totally infallible.

Surprised if the lease company/insurance don't insist on one for new one.

Still, the main thing is you're OK and the insurance should cough up for a new car - shame you'll have another long wait though...

Hope they catch the b'stards and string them up by the short-and-curlies!

No tracker but will fit one next time. Have to wait 22 days before its written off and can order a new one........its a great car am so pi**ed off

Yes family OK which is the main thing, not sure what would have happened if I had caught them (Im a 17 stone ex-rugby player) probably have joined that Asian chap inside except I havent got a cricket bat.

Car probably in a crate now destined for far off shores...not sure whether track would have helped much as it was stolen between 11.30 and 5.30am so they had plenty of time to get away. Full tank of fuel also and they nicked my fuel card lol so god knows......

Well - if they try using your fuel card (or credit cards from your wallet), at least the banks will be able to trace where they're using it and maybe eben catch some video footage (on a forecourt or in a store)...

Hi mate

Same thing happened to me last may, I was working away at the time. Wife was upstairs and the keys were on the kitchen table. Keys stolen around 9pm and the wife didn't notice them missing and the car was still on the drive around 11pm as she looked out of the bedroom window before turning off. It was only in the morning when she looked out of the window to wave son off to college that she saw the car had been stolen off the drive. Worst experience we have had to deal with as the police reckon that the car had been targeted for a while prior to being stolen which was scarey. New car eventually got delivered 9/11/09 and its taught me a lesson as I have beefed up security and keep my doors locked at all times and make sure the car keys are with me at all times. Was targeted again in the early hours last October but thankfully I disturbed them before they could get in the house. I have also fitted a security post at the back of the car which I make sure is raised every night without fail and also fitted upvc sash jammers to front & back doors. I'm glad your family are ok and hope the outcome is a positive for you.

When I bought my A4 the chassis number was on the paper work. If not then the dealer will have it as the details would have been logged on their system to prompt them to prompt you when the first service is due!

I will be taking extra care now though...

Not good at all. Sorry to hear the news. Hope you dont have any probs getting it sorted out with insurance company.

Bit worrisome for the rest of though if there is a steal to order on A5s.

Think I'll hang the car key on the front door and put the ECU under the pillow.

Not good. Not good at all :-(

However nice a car is... it is still just metal and leather. At least you are both unharmed.

On a related note. I work for Trafficmaster, the company that (amongst other things) owns Trackstar (ex RAC). If anyone feels the need for extra piece of mind, I might be able to sort out a reasonable deal. It's not my area and I'm fairly new to the company, but I feel like I should be able to get access to discounts.

There is a little known piece of additional functionality that is available as an add-on to Trackstar and that is something we call "on-demand" and is usually reserved for BMW owners. It allows you to get GPS mileage reports and access a map for journey data, etc.

Not selling these as such btw, just trying to do a favour for fellow owners.

Sorry to hear about the stolen car...

This type of crime always worries me... I keep my keys in a safe and hidden place and the car in a locked garage... but will that mean that they will instead threaten my kids until I give them the keys? ...perhaps leaving them on a hook by the door would be safer?

Sorry to hear that, I was also burgled on Wednesday and my S3 stolen (they left the A5 keys).

They threw patio furniture through my sliding doors, pretty subtle

Blimey Jordan, bad news - sorry mate - so what area are you in?

On this subject - For theiving scum it seems that cars are nearly useless (aside from broken up for spares) unless the the keys are obtained.

I noticed when shopping around for GAP insurance that a lot of the policies specifically exclude 'theft with keys' - well you don't make any money if you have to pay out do you?

I eventually found this outfit - http://www.car2cover.co.uk/

Hopefully I will never have to find out if they are any good.

For me, aside from keeping the A5's keys with me at all times, and it being in the garage the spare set are in the gun safe.

Guys, this is all so sh*tty, I really feel for those of you who have been thus affected because even though we may have our material goods returned or replaced, the feeling of violation and insecurity can remain. I guess we all have to strike a balance between living our lives and enjoying the fruits of our labours, whilst taking the necessary steps to protect ourselves against the grimy underside of humanity!

Our cars are left ungaraged and certainly when I took delivery of the S5 and the Missus her TT roadster a few months later, I was highly conscious that we had some £75K's worth of fairly desirable motors sat there, perhaps tempting any passing rogues.

I take just the basic precautions - deadlock & chain the front door whenever we're in the house, keys always placed in a cabinet out of 'letterbox view' in another room, high intensity PIR floodlight covering the driveway and CCTV cameras under the eaves, front and rear, plus the burglar alarm, plus the baseball bat inside the front door and of course if all that fails, the Tracker on each car.

Like I say, just got to strike a balance and not get carried away......

The trouble you have with these people is no matter what you do to hide your car/keys or even have cctv if they want your car they will stop at nothing. The safe bet is to leave the keys in a room (kitchen) away from your family so no one is harmed should they strike, after all it's only a car and can be replaced. I do agree that it would leave a bad taste knowing that your house was broken into and something stolen but at least you or your family remain unhurt and healthy, the people who do this crime are not just smackheads this is serious organised crime.

I'm in North Nottinghamshire, this is actually the 2nd time in 6 months the S3 has been stolen...this is getting so common now it makes you think if it's worth owning nice cars anymore.

And I thought we had a crime problem in the US.

From personal experience, I can tell you that in the US, you are just as well not getting the car back. If the car is not totalled (engine, tranny,. wheels etc missing) then you will get some relief from the insurance company, BUT they will not recompense for any damage done to the engine, tranny, etc. So you get your car back....and you are stuck with any mechanical problems caused by the thief. Even policies that promise full replacement value, can be a nightmare to negotiate compensation.

In my case I was lucky and the car (Mazda rx7) was a full write off.

Tracking systems help an insurance company save money, but may not help the insured.

Personally I'd rather get the car back, get it fixed and sell it. IMHO it's better than having a full value "write-off" against you on your insurance record. I'd certainly not want to keep the car afterwards

and also, having a vehicle tracked can potentially catch the scum bags so they can't do it again.

It had zero effect on my rates. Maybe it's a U.S. thing.

Regarding getting the car back........Here in the states, you would take a beating trying to resell a vehicle that had been stolen and repaired (you are assuming you have no major mechanical issues to fix.) Unless you wanted to take the steps necessary to cover up its history. And well, then you are no different than the thieves you want caught by your tracker.

You could auction it, but then your price is even worse.

While a tracker MIGHT catch a criminal, it WILL leave you with a recovered vehicle that has a high probability of drivetrain problems (redlined engines, ground gears, bent rods, etc)..........and those are not covered by the vast majority of policies....................in the U.S.

Much better off having the vehicle vanish or recovered in a totalled condition. One big check, take your lumps, and move on

I would hope that the Trackstar stickers in the windows would make the toe rags not bother and go and pick another car to steal.

Shocking news, really feel for you guys. I live in North London and get my S5 in a couple of weeks and I'm almost certain someone's going to have a go.

My girlfriends sister lives round the corner and had her house burgled when they were in Bournemouth, with the car. They got back at night to find the house had been done (again!) to get the spare keys.

Her husband drove the car (X3) round to our house so it wouldn't be stolen, we got up and checked the next morning and it was gone. Police eventually found it in a crate heading for Kenya full of fake Armani jeans.

I've got a big daft Proche Ceyenne and a 911 either side of my house but I somehow know it's going to be my car that gets targetted.

No point fitting a tracker, if some bastard takes it, I don't want it back. May actually consider getting CCTV though......
