Wow, so cool!!! Thanks for the find 418BUC

"Note: If you keep hold of the sensor, this will also close the
windows and the tilting panorama roof." WHOA! I love little things like that

I found this interesting. So we can actually lock people in the car and they can't get out ? Seems kind of dangerous for a car to have that feature.

Warning
"The doors and windows cannot be opened from
inside the vehicle if it has been locked from the
outside.
"

Maybe I've got OCD or something but...

Looking at the A5 quick reference guide has whetted my appetite and I've only just ordered my 3.0 TDi and I'm already chomping at the bit! However I did spot one thing.

My first 2 A4s had a very similar control for the speed of the intermittent wiper function - a small rocker on the top of the right hand column stalk, and both of them started to play up after a while - I guess it must have been a design flaw.

My present S4 has a far more substantial 'roller' selector which can be felt 'through' the face of the stalk and seems a better solution and is less fiddly to use.

Do all A5/S5 models have this?
Is this a retrograde step?
Does anyone know what I'm on about?
I'll just go quietly now...

Dont worry! I know what you are talking about. It seems slightly different to me than the older A4 type (I currently have the same control as you have on your S4), but it isnt a control you would use all that often. On my current A4, and on my A5 which is apparently on a dockside somewhere, I have specified automatic wipers and in the 2.5 years of my current A4 I think I have adjusted the sensitivity twice, once on day 1 and again about a year later to demonstrate to somebody how it worked!

When I test drove a BMW which had the Smart Key/Advanced Key option, I was able to continue driving whilst a mate had the key on him out side of the car. I drove for a good kilometer or 2 whilst he waited for me to come back and the engine did not cut out or anything. A warning light came on for the first few seconds and then went away. When i asked the dealer about this he said that who ever had the car with out the key would not be able to start it again - which does not make a difference to me if they have the car in the first place.

Can anyone tell me if this also happens with the A5? Can you drive away if someone takes the key out of the car? I find this to be a potentially dangerous or annoying fault of the Smart/Advanced Key function

Yes, the same things happens with the A5. My guess is that it does not cut off the engine while driving for liability reasons.

The U.S. A5 manual (p.111) states the following regarding the Advance Key feature:

Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the [key] symbol if the master key is removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to remind you (e.g., when changing drivers) not to continue the journey without the master key.

If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch on the ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the outside with the key.

Wouldn't make much sense to cut out the engine when driving away. I could imagine that cause alot of lawsuits, not to mention accidents

I guess it's for when, for example, you forget something inside the house and leave the car running while you go in to get it.

Is there a full A5 manual online someplace?

Not really, it would be like someone who ran out of gas. It happens too.

I have not yet found out if the A5 allows you to do this but I ended up in Edinburgh after dropping the wife in her RAV4 - she had the key. Luckily it was not stalled at the traffic lights ! No way to lock the car or move it until she arrived - hot foot !

I think it's less than 10secs, they are speed related I believe and presumably Audi is Quicker than BMW????

It is speed related on most VW's and used to be configurable with vagcom though nowadays normally set to lock from the factory. On my passat you had the option to unlock when the key was removed or otherwise you continuall;y had to open with the button.

I have the the advanced key, I can unlock the car by approaching it, and I have the keyless start button. I tried holding down the unlock button to roll down the windows and it did nothing. The only way I have been able to roll downthe windows and tilt the sunroof, is by inserting the key into the door, turning and holding it to the left. What am I doing wrong??

Don't know if it works for USA and Advanced Key but in MMI there is a Setting under Car; Setup; Windows called Convenience Open and you turn that ON to what you want

Nothing. North American models aren't configured with the remote convenience features that the European models have. You can change this behavior with VAG-COM, however - but I don't know if that will also change the behavior of holding the locking sensor or if it will only enable the feature on the remote.

The PDF file that this thread references, and also another thread within (owners quick-start guide) have broken links... I can only assume Audi have shuffled the website around a bit and they aren't where they used to be?

Does anybody have a copy? or indeed a link to the new location if they have indeed been moved, as I can't find them!?

Cheers,
