Smile Buying a Used S5 - excited, but a few questions

Hi there,

I've been following the forums for some time, as have always wanted an S5 since they came out. I am now in a lucky position where I am able to just about afford to buy and run a second hand S5.

I'm hopefully picking it up this Saturday, so am counting down the days.

I just wanted to ask a couple of questions if thats ok. I've searched the forum, but couldn't find definitive answers.

The spec of the 2007 S5 is as good as I would hope and almost has everything I wanted. It has:

Phantom black
B&O speakers
Heated Seats
Satellite Navigation Plus
Voice control system
Bluetooth phone prep
Parking sensors – front and rear – plus system
Audi Symphony radio - 6 cd changer
Hill hold
Comfort pack
Storage pack

and its done just over 24,000 miles and was registered in July 2007, so I'm guessing it was one of the first batch of S5's in the UK? Its had one ownder since new.

The first question is in relation to the start/stop button. THe car has it, but the dealer is saying the car doesn't have advanced key. Now i've got the S5 brochure from 2007 and the only way I think you were able to get the start/stop button was to spec the Advanced key option? The reason I ask is that when you go upto the doors, they don't open with the key in your pocket, you have to press the unlock button on the key. Having read a few threads on the forum, this sounds like the sensors in the door handles might be faulty? I just want to be able to definitively say that the car has got Advanced key. Does anyone have access to the "Dialogue"? system that would be able to tell me the original spec of the car, as the dealer's was down when I went on Sunday.

The second question is - how do I know which bluetooth spec I have? The original manual specs two types:

- GSM mobile telephone preparation on dashboard or in front centre armrest, uses Bluetooth interface or cradle to
connect to your A5, including roof aerial for optimal reception and charger (a phone adaptor is required at extra
cost, please consult your Audi Centre for details on phone compatibility)

- Bluetooth mobile phone connection, uses Bluetooth interface with no physical connection to your A5, including roof
aerial for optimal reception. Please note that your mobile phone must have SIM-Access Profile facility

As the price difference between the two was quite a lot.

Thirdly, is there anything else I should be looking out for on a used S5? 3 years old in July, but the dealer is giving a 12 month warranty on it also.

Fourthly - a smaller thing, but I couldn't see a ski bag in the car - did this come with the car?

Fifthly - should I get GAP insurance? Is it worth it? Dealership want £700 for it.

Very excited, but just want to make sure I'm getting a decent car. Apologies for stupid questions.

Thanks in advance
Rowley

Sounds to me like you have a (broken) Advanced Key. No Stop/Start button without it.

No to GAP imho and def not at that price.

I am assuming it got a service at some point?

That's asking more for gap than they wanted on my new car which has a list of about £53k. Definitely a no-no.

Re bluetooth; have a look in the arm-rest, if there's "phone related stuff" in there then you have the top option, otherwise it's the basic bluetooth which frankly is perfect for most.

Re ski bag; you would only have the ski bag if the ski bag option was included with the car, which it doesn't look like because you didn't list it.

Sorry for the rushed reply, but enjoy your car!

Thanks for the replies.

Yes the car has had a service last year and the dealership has made it "ready" in January 2010 for resale and have spent about a grand on the car making it ready for resale (meeting all their checks etc) - obviously except for making the Advanced Key work :-)

The next oil change service is due in about a year, with an inspection service due in about 22 months.

The arm-rest has a black plastic bit in, with some contact points, so I assume that is for a phone cradle of some sort?

cars without advanced key still have the start stop button(in the us anyway) you put the key in the slot and can start it by pushing the key in or putting the key in and pressing the start button.

That means you have one of the better phone kits, as it has the contact points in order to connect a cradle should you buy one. I'm not sure much beyond this I'm afraid.

I dont believe they do....

I had to get tech pkg (as packaged in 2009) to get Advanced Key to get start/stop button.

No tech package - no advanced key - no start/stop button

From my research I've always found that if you have the start/stop button in the console, then you have advanced key. No start/stop = no advanced key

Get the sensors checked. Even so, if your in the car (with the key in your pocket or hand) you should be able to press the start/stop button. If it doesnt find the key it will say "Key not identified" which means advanced key is defo active but the keys may have been swapped for new ones that arent the advanced key option

If you press the start/stop button with the key in your hand and NOTHING appears on the DIS in the instrument cluster then maybe its been disconnected!?! (thats a guess btw)

Hope that helps and good luck!

Andy

Good news is that the dealer has acknowledged the presence of Advanced key and the door sensors are faulty. So they have ordered them for fitting some time next week. This forum is great :-) Anyone else who isn't in the know who is buying that car wouldn't have known to look for the advanced key, so thats a result

The dealer gave me the print out from Dialog as well. So I've got that for future reference:

Phantom Black Pearl effect
Heated Front Seats
Advanced Key
Auto dimming rear view mirror
Inlays - Stainless steel mesh
Door mirrors, heated, auto dim, folding, memory
Luggage compartment package
DVD Sat Nav
Phone Prep - Low in FCA
Electric front seats with memory
Storage pack
Voice Control
Hill hold assist
Market Introduction vehicle??
cd enhancing underbody panel?? Any ideas here?

The phone prep is called as Phone Prep - low in FCA. So I guess its just the basic bluetooth setup and not the one that uses the Remote SIM. Never mind though, not the end of the world

Pick it up Saturday morning - can't wait. Also the Audi insurance was actually quite a competitive quote, which surprised me.

Cheers so far for tips and hints guys

Thanks
Andy

Market intro vehicle would suggest yours is one of the first cars. Possibly an Audi UK caror dealer demo/launch stock. What does the V5 give as original owner.

CD enhancing panel sounds like some kind of aerodynamic panel fitted underside the car and presumably market specific or something if it appears on the list.

I actually went with Audi Insurance. Close enough to my existing with more benefits and had a bad time last time around with a claim on Direct Line.

Sounds like an Audi Insurance quote needs to be done.

I would assume Market Introduction Vehicle means that it was literally one of the first, possibly used for reviews by magazines/tv etc..?

Picked up the car Saturday - very happy with it, sounds amazing and drive great. Smiling loads and the commute tomorrow morning to work will be a lot better.

A couple of things

1. Door sensors for advanced key - dealer is ordering and will replace

2. Can't eject the DVD disc from the Sat nav unit in the boot - searching the forum suggests this is locked deliberately to stop dvd disc from being stolen in transportation. Need to get dealer to change config so I can replace with latest version

3. The memory seat function doesn't appear to work. I've read the manual and seem to be doing everything right. I've adjusted the seats and mirrors and then I press and hold the "Set" button and then hold the "1" button to store. The manual says that the car should beep and the led in the "Set" button should flash - but nothing happens. Annoyingly the previous drivers settings are stored, so when I go into reverse, the side mirrors dip, but don't return to where I want them, but return them to the previous drivers settings. I guess this is faulty then?

4. The rear entry to the seat behind the drivers seat. The A/B button doesn't appear to work, therefore the seat doesn't move forward or backward - guess this might be linked to point 3 above maybe? Definitely faulty anyhow I think.

5. No ski bag - but not the end of the world

6. I found cruise control - wasn't specced but its there

7. Bluetooth - I have a Nokia 5800 - apparently not compatible with the car bluetooth system. Phone works ok and dials and receives calls, but my phone book will not upload - something to do with the 5800 having a new Symbian software that isn't compatible. Due an iPhone in a few months, so hopefully that will work with it.

8. Any ideas where the phone microphone is?

Going out for a drive now to buy to new car care stuff - needs looking after now :-)

Cheers
