Blown Head Gasket?

So yesterday on my way back from the store I saw the cars temp was starting to climb and then steam from the engine. I pulled over and a coolant line had come off and sprayed coolant all over. Luckily I was only a block from the house so I parked it and took the beater to get distilled water and G13.

Filling the coolant back up I am getting a lot of bubbling and boil over. I tried to bleed the system but it starts to over fill and when the car is off the expansion reservoir empties. I cant find a leak anywhere under the car or in the engine bay. I am hearing some bubbling near the passanger side cylinder bank.

Does this sound like a head gasket issues? Could it be something else?

Also VCDS isn't giving any error codes. No misfires or anything like that. I'm not getting any exhaust smoke but the tips are wet just from getting it up to operating temp. When I turn the car off and unseat the expansion tank cap coolant is sucked back into the tank.

The car isn't overheating but it does get to operating temp. Could this just be the cap?

I've heard they're a pain to get air out of the system.

What I read its just turning on the heat and reving to 1500-2000 rpm with the cap off. I cant figure out where the coolant in the expansion tank is going when the car is shut down. Removing the cap and releasing pressure lets it fill back up. I'm gonna run to the store and grab a replacement cap and see if that solves it. Fingers crossed.

What else could it be? No misfire, no smoke, no overheating. But this expansion tank is being a real cunt. Do you think it could just be the cap and air in the system still? Do you know where the bleeder valve for the coolant system is?

Doesn't sound like a blown gasket, Mike. And, you've obviously still got pressure in the system. I'm with SJ - you've just discovered what a complete PITA these things are to bleed. You may have to take it to you pet mechanic or, as a last resort, the nearest Audi stealer, to get the system properly bled.

So the rear hose to the expansion tank is what popped of spraying fluid yesterday, the larger diameter hose toward mid engine. Whatever part it connects to is corroded, breaking off and plugging the hose. Gonna take it to Audi.

So I'm getting the coolant to stay in the expansion tank. Slowly filling it and hearing it gargle the air out of the line. Decided to drive to get gas and was shocked at how far you can get on 0mile range. Drive was about 5 miles each way for top tier 93 and the car drove fine. Checking the levels after gassing I went from the minimum mark on the tank to about half way to empty. The car did start to raise in temp but I turned on the heater to get it back to temp. Gonna top off the coolant in the morning and check to see if I lost any overnight. I cant tell if I smelt coolant from the engine or just smelt it from dealing with it all day. Gonna take it in to Audi for the damaged hose and hopefully not another Tstat.

I'm hoping its just air in the system. That Tstat isn't even a year old.

So I'm finally not mysteriously losing coolant out of the expansion tank. Car can make it to town without temp climbing out of operating range, but on the way back it does start to climb and I have to start the heater to keep it in range. Think I might still have some air in the system. Gonna try to do one more bleed by letting it run with the cap of and squeezing the radiator hoses. If a drive later tonight doesn't show any progress ill be taking it into Audi.

So it turns out the plastic housing near the oil filter that failed and let the coolant hose go has a crack and is letting air into the system. Not a standard part so gotta wait till Thursday to get it in. $700 later and we will be good to go. On the plus side I think I can bleed the coolant system in my sleep now. Thanks for all the help guys.

I've been following this Audi forum for a while now and after Mike's last 72 hour long nerve wracking I just had to join the forum and offer up this first post. I knew this thing with Mike's overheating was serious because the normal "chiding" between Mike and a couple of the other "regular denizens" of this forum did NOT take place......that "chiding" of course almost always blatantly somewhat salacious but posted in a way so otherwise appropriate that it would usually take a salacious mind to know one. (lol)....but even when Mike posted a thread header "Blown Head Gasket" ......the follow up innuendo DID NOT occur so I knew Mike's post was serious indeed....and therefore nothing to take lightly.

So it is very pleasing for sure.....to me.....for Mike to discover that his worst fear and concern was for naught.....and although there might be several U.S Benjamins involved before the issue is entirely mitigated and resolved ......that expense is a far cry from what could have been. And so while I build my profile here and post pics of my car and some other background info....I want to express a very real sense of relief with respect to Mike's past 72 hour ordeal.....Over the past several months I have enjoyed reading many of the comments and all the other extremely useful information from around the globe that's found on this forum....and to introduce myself and absolutely in keeping with Mike's post here.....fully aware that most of you most likely have already seen this clip .....but in honor of Mike's post right here and the relative "victory" the outcome is.....here's a clip some of you might enjoy....for the first time or once again...since I can't post a website link because this is my first post I've instead put the YouTube link in the attached word doc and I'm thinking most everybody wishing to do so can click it from there. Thanks for the kind words Jeff. We will definitely need pics of your car in an introduction post to know in fact that this is a YouTube Link. And with a few quick hello replies with some witty chiding BANG post count high enough to put the actual link.

Very good Mr wood.....

Now you say you have being following the forum so you know the rules about pictures, and spec would be nice, as would where you live so we can offer regionally appropriate advice ( and Dannyboy can pop round to keep mrs wood entertained when you are out)

and yes we wouldn't wind up someone potentially facing a fhuge bill......

But now it's over...700usd for a plakky bottle....I just hope Trammel used audi approved anal lube...

Oh I see......NOW the chiding begins......LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL I forgot the difference in time zones between down under and up over.

I'm no fierce snake or bullet ant.....but I can hang for a bit with the best of them.....I'll get my profile and all that completed later today...right now I've got to make a run to Sewickley Audi and pick up the 2 touch up paint vials I ordered from them 6 weeks ago.....24 bucks a piece.....and their arrogant attitude came free of charge. Apparently since I am a Levi's 501 person......the service and sales staff believe I must be homeless....and the A6 or S5 I pilot surely belong to someone much more refined with a more endowed wallet.
