Unhappy Starting problems after clutch issue

Hi everyone,

I have a 2011 S5 with a 4.2L and manual transmission. Last week my clutch gave out and left me stranded for a few hours. I had it towed to my mechanic that night and I started to the car to keep warm. The mechanic went to take a look the next morning and the car would not start.

Since then I got the car home, replaced the clutch slave cylinder, bled the system. I figured once the system was closed and functioning properly again the car would start right up. Unfortunately, it has not started right up. I get dash lights, overhead lights, MMI functionality, and all the normal stuff, but the car will not start.

Is there something I need to reset with a computer before it will start again? What other are other possible reasons for the car not starting? It started and ran fine the rest of the day after the clutch gave out.

Thanks in advance.
David

Check the clutch switch by the pedal and can you scan it with vcds?

If it's the switch on the clutch pedal not quite making, I'd have thought that the DIS message asking the driver to depress the clutch pedal would come up when attempting to start (even though it is pressed)?

I did not check the switch by the pedal and I am not getting a message to depress the clutch to start it. I will give it a look real quick while I'm under there changing the clutch master.

I do not have a VDCS, but I have scanned it with a Bluetooth to phone scanner and it showed no codes at all.

**Edit: Throwout bearing has not been changed yet, only the slave. **

I see on the new clutch master that there is a sensor on the top of it, if the master was run dry of fluid from sitting, might that sensor not allow the car to start?

As Scott said. Throw out bearing. It should always be changed when you change the clutch.

It's a combination of the master cylinder and throwout bearing that causes the not starting. You should still be able to start it by burying the clutch pedal (like REALLY hard into the carpet). This will get worse and worse, so go get your clutch changed (including pp and throw out bearing and master cylinder)

Here the thing though, it's not the clutch, the clutch has not been changed. The Clutch Master Cylinder and the Clutch Slave Cylinder have both been replaced and I changed the line between them to the USP stainless steel line.

Before the clutch slave cylinder seal blew there were no issues with the clutch itself. I did not have to push the pedal through the floor, I didn't have problems starting it.

I feel the issue is that the clutch system was drained of fluid due to the broken seal which may have triggered a sensor which is preventing the car from starting.

Ah sorry I misread your post, didn't realise yours is 2011, so shouldn't have the usual clutch issues like the older cars..

I believe their is only a sensor on the master cyl. to start the car.

Does the clutch pedal feel the same as before?

Perhaps check near the master cyl for leaks, in case a seal blew near there too. Check brake fluid reservoir isn't empty, cap is on (there is a sensor on the cap, but not sure what it does)

The sensor on the brake reservoir is a fluid level sensor, the level is good. I just replaced the master, line and slave cylinders, no leaks drips spots or anything. The pedal does have a spot up near the top of its travel that is soft, but the rest is good and firm. Overall it's a little softer than it used to be but not much.

I tested the battery, it was weak, down to 275 CCA. Its supposed to be up near 850 CCA. After removing it, charging it and reinstalling it, there is no change. Car won't start, MMI works, lights come on and off like normal, key fob locks and unlocks doors.

Can't think of much else sorry. There is a connector for the gear selection near the transmission case, not sure how that'd affect starting, but maybe double check that? Have you tried unplugging the master cyl. connector and making sure the terminals and wires are all OK? I highly recommend VCDS though.

Guess I misread your post too. Thought you had replaced the clutch and not the throw out bearing. Sorry. A Ross-tech could tell you if everything is communicating.

I plugged in a VCDS, scanned and cleared DTCs. All have gone away except one. The last one in in Module 8, HVAC stuff. The code is,

01206 - Signal for duration of ignition off time

Then a little further down it says starter relay. I am in the process of getting a new starter relay and will try again once I have a new one installed.

I will get the full fault code and edit it in above later.

This is the code I got last night. I did a little digging and the Ross-tech page recommended replacing the starter relay first. I went to Audi today and purchased a starter relay, installed it and still no good.

Other possible causes were broken links between the climate control and instrument panel, broken instrument panel, or broken climate control.

Does anyone know if the clutch master has to be in a certain position (i.e. sensor up as opposed to on a 90 angle)?

I am getting very frustrated and I am ready to trade it in for a Dodge Challenger GT if I can't fix this.

Sure can, I have two scans that I saved. The first (below) is before I cleared the DTC's.

The second (below) is after I cleared the DTC's, but had not yet tried to start the car. Since clearing the DTC's I have changed out the starter relay and replaced the battery with a new unit from Audi. Unfortunately I do not have access to the VCDS at the moment to scan again and give the most up to date code issues.

Some good news, kinda... We push started it today and it started up and ran perfectly. It went through the gears nicely too. When I pulled in the driveway and shut it down and tried to restart it, it wouldn't start again.

Bittersweet victory.

Congrats! I googled your "P3088 - 001 - Electrical Malfunction" and there's a thread about a starter issue. I'm not sure if the starter connection is accessible without removing too much, but when you start it, do you here the (new) relay "click"? If you have a voltmeter, check to see if the starter is getting power at the terminals perhaps.

The new starter relay does click but I hear nothing from down near the starter. From what I can see, it is really hard to get to the starter from the bottom side but I may have a little more access from the top if I remove the airbox. Replacing the starter looks like its going to be a big pain too and that there are other things I should do at the same time because of convenience. Starter Removal Audi S5 V8 FSI

Can anyone get a wiring diagram (with fuses and relays) for the starter system? Id like to make sure there are no blown fuses or a missed ground before I start an 11+ hour job replacing the starter.

Do you have access to alldatadiy? There's no one diagram, but it does seem to have quite a bit of info on grounding locations.

I got this from them for grounding points of the car:

I do not have direct access to alldatadiy. This diagram does give me a good starting point to start looking for a bad ground.

I guess if you have access, could you get a breakdown of the fuse/relay box under the hood behind the firewall? And maybe an engine wiring diagram, especially the starter wires.

Thank you themirror178

Unbelievable that the engine and transmission has to be dropped to change out the starter. Might as well do all sorts of things while everything is out. Hopefully in your case it's not a full starter replacement.

I can't seem to find a list of what each fuse is unfortunately. The diagrams are split into 30 pages - I do suggest you purchase it ($17) and perhaps you can make out what each fuse is. Here's the diagram for the starter, might be useful:

ws = white
sw = black
ro = red
br = brown
gn = green
bl = blue
gr = grey
li = lilac
ge = yellow
or = orange
rs = pink

C - Generator
C1 - Voltage regulator

S204 - Fuse 1 (terminal 30) See: Locations\Overview Of Fuses
S205 - Fuse 2 (terminal 30) See: Locations\Overview Of Fuses
T5l - 5-pin connector, in the engine compartment

This says it all:

00446 - Function Limitation due to Under-Voltage
002 - Lower Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
Freeze Frame:
Fault Status: 00100010
Fault Priority: 6
Fault Frequency: 2
Reset counter: 207
Mileage: 166075 km
Time Indication: 0

First I would charge battery, it's the most common problem why car doesn't start.

First I would charge battery, it's the most common problem why car doesn't start.
Battery has been changed for a brand new one from Audi and the issue remained. I also changed out the starter relay with the same results.

Update, I have decided to tackle the job of replacing the starter and let me tell you, it is a lot of work. I found a "write up" on audizine that I've been using as a guide.

After 6-7 hours of disassembling things and struggling to remove things from tight spaces I have finally gotten to the starter. I have the lower bolt out and will resume removing the upper bolt tomorrow when there is more light. During disassembly I discovered my passenger side motor mount was torn and leaking fluid. That is now on order and should be here Wednesday or Thursday so hopefully I will be driving my car again by Christmas. Being tight on funds at the moment due to all the above issues, I decided to order the Hamburg Tech motor mounts from ECS. Has anyone heard any good or bad about these?

Thanks for the update, admire your effort to tackle this yourself!

The OEM motor mounts seem to be terrible, I got mine changed to 034 motorsport ones when doing the clutch as they were leaking too. Can't comment on the Hamburg ones, but can recommend 034. Solid filled, so I don't have to worry about it leaking fluid and should hopefully last a while.

Good luck with it all.
