S5 Oil/interim service cost

Hi Guys,

My S5 is about to come up to 9,000 miles and I have the service message coming up saying it is due in about 500 miles. I am assuming this is the oil/interim service so I called my local dealer and they have quoted me just over £300 and I think that is plus VAT too! Now that sounds a bit steep to me as I thought the interim service is a fixed price of £215 according to the website?
Is over £300 a normal cost for this service?

Cheers,
Nick

Will be interesting to hear what others have been quoted, but the fixed priced servicing is only for Audis ≥3years unfortunately...

I havent checked mine recently, but I'm coming up to 4,500 miles and was hoping mine was on the longer interval service, so wouldn't need it until 2yrs/20k miles. I understand that the car decides this for you based on your driving?

Enthusiasts will probably argue that the oil needs to be changed every 10k miles, but I was hoping to not have to pay for any servicing while I had it...!

Hi Lewis, didn't realise the fixed prices was for over 3 year old cars.

Mine has 2 service timings on there one seems to be for oil and the other a main service? As the oil one is saying due in 500 miles and the other due in 10,500. Maybe he could have quoted for a main service too/by mistake but I expected that to be more than 300.

Yea thats right. The main service inspection always seems to be around the 19k miles mark, whereas the interim oil change could range from 9k-20k depending on driving style/conditions. Thats assuming they have put it on a variable service. If they put it on a fixed service, I believe it will come up every 9k miles regardless.

As for the price...its possible he's quoted you for the main service. I hope he has as I was hoping to pay in the region of £180-£200 for my oil service if I do indeed have to do it before the main service....!

Always worth ringing around other dealers mate.

Thanks Lewis. I am guessing as I do about 20k a year it's on a fixed service and I was expecting about £200 as well so will see what the others come up with and report back.

Some useful info here and here. Prices are from dealers in the southern counties so I would expect that Derbyshire should be cheaper, but maybe not. Mine was £258.84 after VAT and was an oil change and inspection. Supposedly the inspection was free but I watched the tech working and he did a thorough job so it wasn't just a quick look.

DrEskimo, if you remember I had an oil analysis done at 4,200 miles and the TBN was 3.2. That suggests that the oil might still be good at 10,000 miles, but the detergents would be quite weak then. I wouldn't advise leaving it to 20,000 miles, not on an S-car.

Yea I think I'll do it around the 9k miles mark regardless. I want the next owner to know they are getting a good, well maintained car. Both inside and out.

Thanks for the info. and links Dippy does seem quite a difference between dealers and areas.

I have now also had 2 quotes from independent specialists of £185 and £130! One of them is Midlands VW who I have heard good things about so I may go with them but £130 sounds too cheap!

Had another dealer come back to me with just under 250 can't believe the difference in these prices.
One thing I thought though does servicing elsewhere other than Audi affect the warranty? Spoke to my dealer and he said it shouldn't as long as I follow the schedule on the DIS.

Nick, I would imagine that £130 is indeed just an oil change and that's fine. Whilst I don't want to sound like I'm defending the stealers, my service did include an inspection and the tech was truly busy on my car for at least half an hour. Considering the hourly rate charged and a minimum charge of 1 hour I think that makes around £250 'correct' and not a shameless rip-off.

I would far, far have preferred to have had the service done by the independent I have used for years, MDM Technik. However there are three aspects to impact on warranty:
1) Warranty is maintained as long as genuine VAG approved parts are used and that includes the oil. If an independent does the work then it will be a good idea to retain evidence that this was the case: In the event of a warranty claim you might need to show that evidence.
2) Audi now have an 'electronic' service record and I assume that only stealers can update it. So if you use an independent then the record will be missing, and again you'll need to provide evidence that it was done at the correct time.
3) This is moot, but I have heard many times that any Audi 'goodwill' for repairs outside of warranty or where warranty would not normally apply, is dependent on having a FASH.
So for me paying £250 for the first service at an authorised dealer made sense.

Here's a handy link for Audi Service intervals and what they include. Dealers will recommend a maintenance service (5K, 15K, 25K, 35K, ...) if you are within 1000 miles of the interval.

Here in the US, I pay about $90 to my (non-dealer) shop for a Mahle (OEM) filter and high quality synthetic oil that exceeds the Audi spec.

Hi Dippy,

Yes £130 is just an Oil change.

I understand the dealer will probably also do some other inspections on the car but to me charging twice as much is a bit steep especially when it was just over £200 (at a dealer) on my SQ5 last year and that same dealer want another £112 plus VAT on top of that for the S5.

With regards to the warranty I spoke to Audi CS and they said as its only an oil change and if I keep the paperwork it wont affect warranty, they said the same applies to a service as well but I think for servicing or at least the first one I will use Audi as the service prices didn't seem too bad to what I paid on the last car. Its just the oil change cost that made me fall off my chair!

My car is finally due its oil change service next week. Been just over 12months (registered 28/11/15) and just hit 8,500 miles.

First local dealers quoted me £315 odd and told them to jog on. MK Audi came back with £280 and managed to get them down to £250 so I reluctantly accepted. Mainly for the reasons Dippy listed above. Hopefully I get a good service...

Hope all is well Lewis and you have had a good Christmas.
I am now just under 23k miles and registered a couple of weeks before yours was. Had a first main service and 2nd oil change at the same time about 5 weeks ago at 20k and decided to go main dealer. Apparently there was a software update or something that was needed too.
Called round as usual and there was over £100 difference between the closest main dealers to me.
I think the independent garage had quote 280 but decided I wanted to use a dealer at least for the first service. Best I had was Northampton Audi at 385 highest was 500! My Dad uses Northampton Audi so decided to go with them and they were very good so will look at them again next service but oil change I may go down the indy route again as I think 250 is a bit steep and they were almost half that.
Next on the list is 4 tyres though, must get them sorted pretty soon as they are quite low....

Understand where you are coming from Mr 99, but given the age of your car and the minor modifications you have made, (!!!) things like warranty and dealer goodwill don't enter into your equation.
There is a middle road which has been discussed before....use the dealer but supply your own oil. Just discuss it with them first, after you have got an itemised, written or emailed quote.

Sober since 1st January 2016......unfortunately it is now clear to me how fucked up our world is. It's enough to turn a man to drink.....

Hey Nick, good thanks mate, and yourself?

Ha love how you have done nearly 3x my mileage :P Working in London now so barely do 50miles a week ATM! I completely agree, and was very nearly going to ring around a few specialists, but I was hoping to pay about £200, and at £250 I couldnt be bothered to keep looking! My finance deal will be up by this time next year, and while I would love to buy it and keep it, it just wouldn't be a good idea. Means I don't have to worry about the big service in a years time though, including tyres and brakes!

As per my other threads I'll be looking at downsizing to a S3 Hatch, in a few months time. Just emptied my house and moved into my in laws in preparation for a big renovation and extension, so once that is done and built up some funds I'll be looking for a decent used S3

Yea thats the way to go! Being new and still under warranty, I need to get an expert to do it. Could save money by going to a specialist, but sometimes its easier to just bite the bullet and get it to the dealer, as Racks says...

Have you got any details of this? I'm planning to have a remap soon so need to know if it is relevant for my car.

Ha love how you have done nearly 3x my mileage Working in London now so barely do 50miles a week ATM!

Yeah good thanks Lewis.

I am on more like 80 miles a day at the moment. Not good for the wallet but love the car!
Seeing as you are likely to be changing next year as you say you won't need a main service or new tyres so just one or two oil changes during ownership is pretty good so may as well use a dealer.

I had been considering an S3 too as they are pretty much similar performance but cheaper to run and a bit more up to date tech wise but I think the boot would be too small. A mate has one though and they are really nice cars.
If I didn't have two young kids the S3 would be ideal or in saying that the money I would be saving I would have an RS3!

Sorry I don't and it doesn't say on the invoice. It was a while back they told me though probably around 6 months ago when I had the first oil service but as I went to an independent it didn't get done then so only done on service last month.

I am assuming you are going to MRC with their release of the CREC remap? I will hopefully be doing that too as long as the price isn't crazy.
