Trading in A5 for S5

Hi All!

Already have a 2012 A5 Sportback 2.0 Tdi s-line however I've just pushed the button on a brand new MY 15 S5 Black Edition Coupe - and I can't wait !!

Honestly thought that I would never be able to afford an A5 let alone an S5 - thanks to my business doing well it means I can benefit from a luxury or two

Spec as follows:

S5 3.0 TFSI Quattro S tronic
Mythos Black
Lunar silver-Black seats
Advanced Key
Assistance Package
Audi drive select
Audi Parking System Advanced
Convenience package
Door mirrors - electric, folding, dimming + memory
Garage door opener
Technology package - high

Ended up ordering it via Carwow and getting a £9k discount from list price including the standard Audi finance contribution (£4300). This was picked up by Milton Keynes Audi and resulted in a couple of 10 minute phone calls this morning before I went ahead with it all - nice and painless.

In comparison - I spent 3 hours in my local dealership on the weekend. 2 hours faffing and talking rough figures. 1 hour them trying to get close to the figures that I had quoted via carwow. Every 20 minutes or so they would find a way to take more money off - but ultimately couldn't come near to the price I had.
Great to visit the local dealership to test drive the S5, just a shame they could have saved both of us a lot of time if they could just give me a great price to start with, rather than starting off with one miles away from what I had and giving in more discount as the day went on.

Any tips or advice on what happens next?
I see some people getting weekly updates on their cars build status etc.. is this standard across all dealerships?

Very nice mr shorty. Now the painful wait begins!

I don't get weekly updates, there wouldn't be much to update I think. However, I get a call from my sales guy once every two to three weeks. I fact, I'm due a call this week, so lets see if he keeps up the care. I'm currently confirmed at build week 4 (next week), and due to take delivery 1st March as long as it doesn't capsize mid-channel! All being well, my total wait will have been 16.5 weeks from date of order.

Dan.

I heard them mention build week 10 on the phone, they seemed to think that was April?
Not sure how the build weeks work, but week 10 in mid March according to my calendar?

yep. thats build week. then they put it on a train, then a boat, then a transporter. then they might have to hide it for a week or so to fix the transport damage. (not common but not unknown..IZ london caught them out on it.)

add 2-4 weeks.

Congrats on your purchase, now the wait begins
No point in getting updates too frequently but my dealership told me when it has reached the port in Emden. Depending on when the next ship is due it can then take 2 or 3 weeks to get you from there.
I was quoted 5 months for delivery but it arrived in 3.5

Going to be a long wait!
Really happy that I went with the Coupé in the end. The sportback is great but I love the shape of the Coupe and just felt nicer to drive than the SB.

You've ordered a lovely car there. No doubt you've worked very hard to make your business a success so it's great that you can treat yourself.

Carwow is a great find. I was amazed at the difference in price across the country. Coventry Audi was the best price for the model and spec I considered. Amazed that the offers ranged from £36k to £44k.

If I had chosen the SB it would have been Coventry, they were around £38k in total. The Coupé ended up being £39k via Milton Keynes for the exact same spec.

Brilliant meeting with our accountant today - I asked how they thought we were doing and they said "Great! Most people get a stash of money in their company bank account and go crazy and buy fancy 4x4 cars, or range rovers or something....But it's great that you're being sensible"

Awkward moment of me telling him I'd just bought the S5...

Just a big MPV I think, certainly nothing fancy! Although he did say he was out shopping for Audi's over Christmas but didn't like the pushy salesmen.

Sometimes I think Audi dealers are about where Merc were in the late 80s, and to a certain extent BMW in the 90s. Their own worst enemies on occasions....plus of course there's good and bad ones representing all manufacturers, through their respective chains.

Congrats on the new order though - looks a great spec

Since this thread is discussing new cars, what's the view on the paint protection package that dealers offer - worth it or not?

Absolutely not worth it even if they give it to you 'free' instead of something else you actually want!

Entirely dependant on the skills of the person applying it and most of them wouldn't know how to do a good job, never mind have the time to do it.

Save your money and put it towards a proper specialist 'detail'

Dippy, I've just looked into all of this. For the price of the cheapest protection they have offered me I can get a very good detailing / paint protection service done by a proper detailer.

I had Lifeshine applied on my current A5. And It's 18 months in and I couldn't tell the difference as to whether it was applied or not, except for if you pour water onto the carpet it beads off instead of soaking in. The car was also still wet when I collected it so they hadn't really applied it properly and left it to cure properly I don't think.

I've emailed Tim at envyvaleting.co.uk and he's given me some prices which I'm going to go for when I collect the car. Although it does mean I get about 1 hour of driving my new S5 before having to part with it for 2 days for the detailing to be done

Dippy (and sirshorty) I'd strongly advise you insist that the dealership don't touch it and as others have said get a decent detailer to apply a protection to it. Speaking from experience the pre-delivery wash they give it can be appalling.

I've asked the dealer to leave all the protective wrapping on it so I can drive it to the detailed immediately. They're arguing that they can't check the car over for scratches / paint chips etc. still going to argue this a bit closer to my collection time as there's no point arguing before I've even received my build week (officially)

Many detailers will work at showroom premises, so find someone recommended and speak to them about it. It might work out for the best if it's done on site as the dealer can do his quality checks when the wrapping is removed, but doesn't then get to balls up anything found if it's only paint correction required. Similarly means the detailer doesn't unwrap the car to find issues for the manufacturer to deal with, with some debate over when/how it might have happened.

I'd agree with Adrian... they are generally competent enough to pull the wrap off.

As Adrian says, speak to you preferred detailer and they may well be able to do something on site.

I'm glad I asked!

I'll have to think about this. I can see the advantages of having a detailer do the job at the dealer, as the detailer will be better at finding any imperfections than me (especially with my eyesight ). However I also like the idea of using a detailer local to me and then using them on a regular basis to keep the car in top condition.

Shrek, can you recommend any detailers in Berkshire (I'm based near Reading).

I've used Michael of GemClean Detailing for my previous A5 and Current S5, some A5 pics here and the S5 ones here and highly regard the job he did, although perhaps a little pricey.

Someone else (warren_S5) has used DMC with good results too. I'll send you a PM with a bit more detail.

Thanks. Those photos are quite revealing and convince me that I will need to make some sort of arrangement to make sure my new car is looked after.

Question on delivery.
The Milton Keynes dealership is offering free delivery - do I take the 2 hour drive for the whole 'reveal' experience, or do I let them deliver to me for free?

I'm assuming it will be delivered on the back of a truck and not driven to me, like one of my previous new cars (ford focus) but that was via a leasing company.

I'd go and get it - you'll see it under harsh lighting to give you a chance to look it over. if it's peeing down with rain when it's delivered to you, in the dark, it's a lot harder to get the dealer to sort any issues out.

Plus it's a 2 hr drive home to get familiar with it

I'd agree with that. Definitely see it under harsh lighting or at least take a good bright torch with you in case the lighting isn't great. I picked mine up outside and it was overcast..... Won't be making that mistake again.

Hi and congrats on your purchase. I agree you should collect (I drove 8 hours, staying overnight, before collecting my last car). Also agree the protection pack is not something you should pay for - I got it for free with full tank but only to have my local dealer beat the best price I had on the net.

Shame your local dealer didn't oblige. I was more successful with mine and that was an immediately available car which they had to source from a competitor's dealership. They matched "drive the deal" (best price I could get at the time) around 17.5% off, but time of year and salesman, sorry, advisor motivation has a lot to do with it. If the order books are full...

Garage
iPhone torch or proper, proper torch?

Assuming that if I look it over and don't see anything, then take it to the detailer who does find something then they'll argue it happened after I took ownership of the car and thus my fault?
