TT Airbag with RS6 (?) wheel - making it work in a 2008 B8 S5

Hi all,

I've seen plenty of threads in and around this area on making round airbag/wheel combos work in our beloved B8 A5s.

I bought a new wheel (allegedly RS6) and it came with a TT airbag (8J0 880 201 N 6PS) and I'm assuming a TT harness (8J0.971.589.H). Now I have it I'd like to get it to work. So has anyone done this or got any instructions?

My aims are
1) to fit the wheel with full functionality
2) not touch/butcher my existing wheel/harness in case I want to refit

So to meet aim 2, I guess I need to get hold of another S5 harness and then reconfigure it with the bits required to attach to the TT airbag, potentially by butchering the supplied harness in the process.

I've spotted many threads which would make me think this is doable:

mk2 tt steering wheel and e-code HID swapped in << I think this thread holds the key.

Wiring assignments - can anyone help?

Flat Bottom Steering Wheel-INSTALLED!

Steering wheel swap question

Can anyone help:
a) advise if my plan is sound and
b) advise of what needs to be altered on the S5 harness.

Thanks in advance

Pics below of the new wheel/airbag (as you can see if has a different connector):

On this one, can clearly see the connector has a different shape, above the 12 pins, the three holes are not all the same size, one is a larger size.

I had the same problem you need to get a clockspring (harness) from the donor car that matches the one from your car. But be warned I've only got my airbag to function not my multifunction buttons which slightly irritates me but I suppose I love the FB wheel that much I can Change radio stations the old way. If you figure it out would you be kind enough to pm me please

I think the key is in this thread which I posted above: mk2 tt steering wheel and e-code HID swapped in

This suggests you don't get a harness from the donor car (as that's what I have supplied with the wheel), but alter the harness from your car (or a replacement one which matches your car). Then you split the ground cable to make two grounds for the TT airbag and then have to alter the horn connector spade to fit onto the airbag. As it's from the same harness as your car then the multifunction should work fine.

When I have figured it out will definitely PM you

I think I have the answer and will attempt the modification when I have a fresh harness to work with.

The harness in my car is a 8K0.971.589.A. This is the harness used in our A5 B8 as well as the A4 B8 referenced in this article above.

According to the thread I highlighted above, this very same harness was adapted as shown below to work with this airbag, so swappping the horn spade from the TT harness and making an additional ground should work. Will keep you posted on progress and if this works OK.

Combine the two above to make:

Looks promising. Good luck and please pm me with the results. Very interested

That's exactly my thought and just so we know what we are dealing with I think the airbag is about $600 usd. Sort of makes this quite tense. However I hate that my buttons don't work. Almost make me wish I bought from Alex at eurocode

These were the two different clocksprings the one on the left came with the fb wheel-I believe to be a tts or a S3 the one on the right is my oem S5 clockspring. Is this the same for you cuppa?

Hi all, I´ve been some time around here, but today I needed to say something, later I´ll a proper introduction of my car and myself.

I´m just checking the pictures, and there is something here that doesn´t work; in your pictures cuppa I see a 2 stage airbag, so you´re right, just playing with the wires will solve the issue, but in this picture from almostS50 y see an adaptive airbag... not a 2 stage, so the TT airbag shouldn´t be an option here.

You both own a S5 right? but your airbag systems are different... what year where them manufactured?

I own a 2009 A5, with the square shaped airbag, and it is too adaptive (TT airbag won´t fit), but some other A5´s seem to have regular 2 stage airbags...

What the reference of your airbag almostS50?

I can happily report that the wiring diagram in this link works a treat and the wheel is 100% functional [up]

Just solder the horn connector and the ground connector wires onto your harness as shown in the photo below and off you go. Picture below shows the finished harness (plus I put the bits I cut off next to show where they were) - you can see the horn connector (top right) is much bigger and the single ground (middle of the photo) is replaced by two larger grounds.

The only thing I don't like about that steering wheel is that it's on the wrong side!!! ;)

Well today I got it to work by rewiring the entire harness stem to stern and creating a loop on the ground wire. Big thanks to Cuppa and llBen.

Hi, was hoping someone here could help me or point me in the right direction.
I have an '09 A5 with the older "shield" airbag, and am switching to a flat bottom wheel. I have airbag part # 8K0880201AE6PS, which unfortunately can not just be swap the harness from my existing vehicle.
I am trying to figure out how to remove the pins from the harness so that I may re-wire the harness that way, but can not for the life of me figure out how to. Can anybody provide some pointers on how to remove these pins?
Attached are pics of the harness and the airbag. Thanks so much for any help!

Hi, not an easy task.

You need a SLIM flat screwdriver, or even better a hand made tool, to push down the trigger or every pin.

First remove the lock, pushing it from one side and taking it from the opposite.

Then insert your tool (long and flat) in the flat hole near every pin, push until you hear a "click" and then take the wire from the other side and pull until you get it.
