Puddle lights

I'd like to fit puddle lights but all the threads i've seen are of people taking out their original ones & replace with one displaying a logo.

Can this be done if i don't have a puddle light fitted? I looked under the door & the blanking plate is still in place so will the wiring still be there if i took off the plate?
