Posting Pics -- Best Method

I got a PM asking me how I posted my pics, a question I've seen other members also ask others from time-to-time in various threads. Because I went through some wacky steps to be able to post I thought I'd post the reply I sent - which betrays my newbie ways and also shows how big a Band Aid I applied to the problem - because I'm sure people would benefit from a sticky up-top set of instructions from someone who really knows how to do it correctly. (If you are such a person, please post the most efficient way to upload photos in response to this thread, and Andrew, please affix this to the top of the board, if you agree that makes sense.)

If you scroll down when you are posting you'll see something that says "manage attachments." Click that and then browse to file that you want to attach and click upload. That's only half the battle though. When I did that originally, I kept getting messages that my files were too large to attach. So, and this will sound crazy and there must be a better way, I e-mailed the pics to myself using my MSN e-mail account, which has a built-in utility to compress pics for e-mail purposes. I then resaved the compressed version of the pics that I e-mailed to myself and went through the whole "manage attachments" upload process again with the compressed pics, which worked.

I agree that this should be a sticky, but in the photos forum.

Yes, it's the compression that tricky for most. It all depends on what program you are using to view the photo on your computer, but very often you can simply choose to "Save as..." and adjust the size. It may instead have a slider for "quality" or some such thing - but the end result is a smaller photo file on your computer that you can then upload via that paperclip/attachments option (also be sure you have selected "go advanced" when composing, so that you see this option).

Now, also note the option that looks like mountains on a postcard (Insert Image). With that option, you can simply insert a url link to the photo if it already resides somewhere else on the web. That said, it won't do just to provide a link to a page that has the photo. It has to be a link to the exact photo (often, if you click on a photo on a page it takes you to a page with a larger version of that photo - THAT'S the link you want).

1. Upload your pictures to the picture gallery here: http://www.a5oc.com/photos/.

2. Click 'Upload', http://www.a5oc.com/photos/upload.php and follow the steps as prompted

3. Copy and paste the code from beneath the picture [[IMG]]http://www.a5oc.com/photos/images/2/large/1_bordercollie1.jpg[[/IMG]]

4. See how easy it is

Andrew, I think that would be helpful because it is the file size limitation that I think is causing people the most grief.

The reason I use image shack is because I am a member of multiple forums and I call the pictures up quickly without trying to remember where they were uploaded....

I hear ya though.....

I upped the file size limit to 1MB. If that still isn't enough I can go 2MB but 1MB for a JPEG is pretty damn big on the web.

can you bring up to 2mb. This would make it easier I understand that 1Mb is big but 2Mb would allow to download pictures directly taken by the camera at higher res. It easier for people like me that are challenged technologically!!!

You have got to worry about your bandwidth usage though. Big pictures are great however bandwidth will eat a site alive. As more users get on here with more post and more pictures bandwidth rates will kill you. Usually what happens is donating members get attach pictures to your server. While regular users must post them somewhere else so that other website has the bandwidth problems.

Thanks Jason

Here ya go!

I've replaced the transparrency with white and reduced the size by 2% and the number of colours in the pallette... It shouldn't look any different from the original... I've tested it and it uploads as an avatar. Enjoy!

Ian.

Hmmm interesting... it was fine with me... and yes, animated GIFs are allowed. ???

let me put it into photobucket and paste the link, then you can right-click and 'save-as'

Try this:

By the way... I reduced it's size to 100 pixels wide as this is the max size for the avatar on here... which meant I could leave the transparency and number of colours as they were because the size reduction was enough to get the file size inside the limits.

Cheers Ian,

I tried both from the forum gallery and saving it back to my hardrive and re-uploading it without success

must be something to do with the code as if I upload as an image in the thread now, this is what happens

Try again by right clicking the image in my post at 03:54 and saving the image to the hard drive. Then you can upload it as your avatar. I've tried it and it works.
