S-tronic violent downshifts when hot

Has anyone experienced quite violent downshifts from 2nd to 1st when the car has got rather hot (normally a hot day after a good run).

I know it isn't the smoothest in normal temperatures anyway but under the hotter temperatures it happens in both D/S (S more prominent), you brake to stationary and whilst stationary the gearbox selects 1st and it feels like it dumps into gear shaking the car.

Mine never does shift down to first gear unless I'm in sports mode or come to a complete stop.

Not noticed it being more violent when warm.

+1. Same behaviour here.

Mine has a noticeable thud when changing from 2nd to first after a spirited bit of driving in S. (Probably temp related now you mention it) I've fitted the 034 Motorsport transmission mount and the Apikol sports diff mount to try and reduce this which has helped but not completely fixed the problem. Normal driving it's fine, no thud when coming to a stop, only after a bit of heavy footed S mode.

This is part of what I complained about on my 2.0 TFSI (s-tronic). They checked it out looked for software, then dropped the whole thing out to look at it.
They replaced the flywheel and long story short, not a lot of improvement. I believe it is just a negative trait of the S-tronic pre-2012.

Good to know i'm not the only one.

Luckily i can drive around it by manually changing down to first whilst slowing as this produces no thud (and also means less of those pull out no power situations!!)

I have exactly the same issue with my 2010 A5 3.0 TDI sportback (now at 99,000kms). When I'm driving in D and slowing down to a stop, the s-tronic gearbox does a sudden change from D2 to D1 which jerks the whole car forward. It happens when the speed drops down to 1km/h. The mini display between speedometer and tachometer shows D-D1-D-D1 several times when it happens.
The one consistent thing about this is that it ONLY occurs after driving in heavy stop/start traffic for more than about 15mins. As long as there is no traffic, it never happens even after thrashing the car in S.

I had the problem shown to Audi here in Sydney and they changed the S-tronic transmission oil and updated the S-tronic control software, but sadly that has not resolved the issue. They say the next step is to take the mechatronics unit off to check it out.

Another forum member 'elmajiko' had the same issue a few years ago: http://www.a5oc.com/forums/a5-s5-topics/22173-s-tronic-any-reliability.html#post289786

Be really keen to exchange notes if you manage to fix yours!

I have recently had both changed and the repair kit on the mech unit.. but i have also found since the repair the car now only does it when it is hot... and when you are in 2nd gear for to long.. so my exact issue which i would be interested in knowing if anyone else has this issue.. so pulling away when hot..
1st-2nd-3rd...4th...... slow down to a stop... no bump or bang...
however.. 1st--2nd.. slow traffic.. as you come to a stop bangs back into 1st... also. pulling away 1st-2nd-3rd....7th... slowing traffic... 3rd...2nd. slowly coming to a stop so engages 2nd..comes to a stop bangs into 1st.

Sorry to hear that, PINGU121 :( I'm still experiencing the issue in my 2010 A5 3.0 TDI sportback here in Sydney, Australia. Since getting Audi to change the S-tronic transmission fluid and update the S-tronic control software, I *think* the problem is occurring slightly less frequently (i.e. even after driving in heavy stop/start traffic for more than 20mins) and when it does rear its head, maybe I'm imagining it but it *seems* slightly less violent.

One thing I have found is that when it does show up, I can avoid it by flicking the paddle shifter down from D2 to D1 when I know I'm about to come to a stop: it basically goes M2 -> M1 -> D1 and does NOT jerk if I do it that way. I hope this helps in some small way to those experiencing this extremely frustrating issue.

Also, the issue is not all that uncommon, from what I have found:

I wrote about it here maybe 3 years ago, this problem is due to Mechatronic faillure which costs cca. 1500 EUR.

I had exactly the same problem on, our family Q5 3.0TDI Stronic, in 2012, after 30 000 km.
It was 14 days before end of a warranty... Little fight with Audi service, but they did it in the warranty.

That's why I don't like Stronic...

I have an 08 S6 with a ZF transmission that displays the same 'lurch' when coming to a stop. In S mode it also exhibits a VIOLENT 2-1 shift when pressing the throttle after a near stop. I do not use the S mode for I fear damaging the drive line. There is a thread at the ZF Lurch in the Audi S6

Same story here with a 2012 A5 SB, after both moderate and normal driving in S mode, shifts from 3rd to 2nd gear are quite jarring and harsh with a distinctly audible clunking noise. When using the paddle to downshift from M3 -> M2 -> M1 it's smooth and doesn't seem to have the violent jerk. Will be getting it looked at when I take the car in for servicing soon, transmission specialist said servicing might not do much and it might be a mechatronic issue...fingers crossed. Hoping that's just the way these S-tronic units were designed...

Hi guys I’m new!! Have a 2011 s5 had it about 6 months now and going well have noticed when I had it that I had a violent gear change from 2- to 1st when hot. Or driving for more than half an hour. Had the gearbox adapted and been fine for a while now it’s come back Has anyone had the apr tcu remap and has it helped? I read loads of people changing mech unit’s and it’s only temporarily fixed it and don’t want to fork out a load a money for something that seems inherently wrong with pre face lift s5-s4s ? Any help would be appreciated!!

If the mechatronic replacement doesn't fix it, then it's the internal clutches. Clutches get damaged out if you leave the bad mechatronics in for too long. All that violent change in momentum is taken up by the clutches since there is no fluid torque converter.

Since your car is about 10 years old, chances are you have both mechatronic and clutch damage. Only permanent fix is a new transmission since the parts+labor of replacing both mechatronic and clutches are more expensive.

There's a reason why used Audi's are so cheap.
